a really quick doodle i did a few days ago as a warm up

an OC i’ve been workshopping for a while now; this is Tia, a chimeric mutant of uncertain origin who wanders from place to place, causing trouble and so on

i did this pic because i was trying to work out the specific design of her ears and to see if pink was a good eye color for her; i wasn’t too concerned with the proportions i would prefer for her, so her torso is usually a lot broader

I’ve been reworking some OCs lately and one of them was an orc from my fanfic days i made as a part of a boisterous and benign orc horde.

this particular character is called Chopstop; not technically an orc, but reimagined as a goblin who was raised by orcs and where she lacks in physical size and power, she’s used her profeciency in gadgets to built a mech that lets her fight as an orc does, so here’s a rough draw of what this mech might look like?

i went super stylized with the human there (for size reference), and it’s a bit of a work in progress as far as the button eyes look goes; perhaps not the best idea to put in eye-whites. I am very much unskilled with mech/robot design; I based the general look on Iron Bear from Borderlands. IDK, its a thing in progress

experimenting with cartoony/more relaxed art style here; i’m trying to wean the realism out of my drawing (because omfg i am getting so goddamn sick of all the fine details) and im taking steps in that direction

it looks like a big step towards that feeling is to go with a flow without much concern for what makes realistic sense and not focusing too much on fine details

was doing some doodling the other day and lo and Lizardman happened

some ideations for Volcanic Obsidian, exploring some ideas for her look

the idea is that the white patterns/spots on her body are fractures, similar to real obsidians, and that hair mirrors her state of enthusiasm; normally it is hardened igneous stone/cooled magma, but when she gets fired up, it transforms into lava-like hair. this also allows her to use her lava-based shapeshifting powers, but it is emotionally painful to maintain this level of energy for long

also some edits i did to make her design less cluttered; without the mark on her face, and her hair just being orange hair

some EXTREMELY scribbly head ideations i have for an OC i’ve had for a while but have never drawn: Toast, a human-loathing robot whose big ambition is to either 1. burninate all the humans on the grounds of them being the Worst, or 2. stay the hell away from them forever because See Option 1

his character design is simple; he’s either maximum cranky or an absolute trolling gremlin whose default state is AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH all the time. sort of intended to look like a tiny metal kaiju or dinosaur, while having colors that reflect his theme of fire powers. working out a way to give a design that is cute, simplistic and has ways to emote more easily, but also doesn’t make him look like a metal Guilmon? Also ways tro draw him simpler but give the impression that he’s a robot a lot easier

primary a deep-ish red, with darker metal bits for detailed areas and yellow on the fin bits. Blue eyes, to indicate heat!

general emphasis is Round and Cute, with maximum gremlin status

i was doodling to try to remember how to draw legs again and wound up with a cryptid-looking thingy!

so i really like the idea that troll skin becomes this sort of obsidian tone as adults but it becomes REALLY monochromatic using the canon dark clothes + dark hair trolls usually have, so i hit on an idea; inverting the color scheme to make it stand out more and pop a bit

I used Porrim as an example: brighter colored hair, with her tattoos a paler white, gray clothing for a contrast. also a bit of experimenting with an oval, snout-ish head shape for some xeno ideation

(i’m still unsure if troll breasts would feel pain, perhaps with troll chitinous skin giving a kind of armor or pain resistence, but I’m pretty sure that getting tattooed there WOULD hurt and if trolls do feel pain like squishy humies, all i can say is that Porrim is super dedicated to her aesthetic.)

The Penitent Counselor, Sekhma Dionsi. My number one fantroll and a purpleblood, she is a follower of the Signless and may have even been around during his life. She sincerely believes that as a purpeblood, all the sins commited by purples are on her as well, and as that brand shows, she’s more than a little prone to performative gestures as acts of faith.

She works as a counselor by day, using chucklevoodoos to soothe people’s mind and help thme work through their troubles. At night she’s a wild party goer, rocking it out hardcore.

But inside, the thought of shame is never far from her, and the need to do something to atone.

(A Hot Former Clown Mom that has changed class to Hot Punk Mom and damn well rocks it.)

Did you ever have a xenobiology headcanon for trolls, at least for funsies? I'm thinking like imagining them furry or with tails. I once read someone talking about them swallowing food whole with no gag reflex, which seems mighty creepy but interesting.

hmmm. *chinscratch* i’m not extremely xeno that way. echolocating/electricity/psi-sensing horns, mostly, plus jaws that unhinge but they still can’t swallow anything their throat won’t fit over and they’re not as elastic as a snake there. they also don’t suck as much (when kissing or going down on someone or just at all) because they never nursed from their parent as a newborn so the reflex isn’t there, it’s more of a deliberate, learned-later gesture.

also all trolls have venom gland buds, just hormones make them develop or not. It’s actually not that rare for a female troll to be totally flat or for a male to have breasts, though most of the time they stay relatively small. “male” and “female” trolls actually function as what we’d see as breeding males biologically speaking, since they bring in the gametes, and the Mother Grub as female. (not quite the same tho, it doesn’t map exactly on our stuff.)

they also breathe a lot through their skin and sopor has a high oxygen content, so a human might get a little dizzy but comparatively we don’t breathe much from our skin. Trolls are way harder to drown, even the non-sea ones. (it’s still not advisable to breathe the sopor in! DX too thick to play nice with the fiddly little things in there.) but considering their bodies slow down a lot in sopor and they have automatic “don’t let wet stuff down the windpipe” reactions (separate swallowing and breathing tubes if that’s doable maybe?) so they might sleep well enough that they stay submerged and don’t visibly breathe more than the couple of times they need to resurface per night. (if they’re having bad nightmares they need to surface more — once per hour or more) and it might wake them up in full. usually they’re so used to repositioning themselves to breathe in case they’ve slipped under that it barely registers.)

So first to answer your question, Asuka, separate throat/food tubes and trachea/breathing tubes is a really much more sensible way to design things because it makes it really difficult to choke. The reason we don’t have that set up you can blame on our evolutionary history; there is no good reason why trolls wouldn’t have a totally separate trachea that is not at all connected to the mouth. 

For the sopor bit, for trolls to breathe through their skin, it has to be pretty thin (at least in some spots); human skin is too thick, amphibians do it really really well, and bats actually exchange a large amount of gas (mostly expelling CO2) through their wings. So either trolls have large patches of thin skin for breathing somewhere, they keep their noses above the surface for breathing like sleepy crocodiles, they go into really deep torpor and can hold their breath for 8ish hours/they regularly surface to breathe, or they take the side-necked turtle route.

What if the spots down the sides are the same basic thing as the seadweller gills? Just that the seadwellers adapted them for use underwater.

huh! possible. i don’t usually try to headcanon the seadwellers because thhey make no sense, but it having a common origin with normal skin breathing spots… hrrm no, they’d need something other than fishlike gills then, skin spots that exchange oxygen wouldn’t evilve spontaneous new organs UNDERNEATH…. unless the normal trolls also AAAAAAAAAAAAAA not enough biology to make it make sense.

anyway i like the headcanon that troll precursors used to be amphibious and living in swamps.

If seadweller ‘gills’ were developed from landdweller skin patches, they would need a much greater surface area to efficiently breathe in low-oxygen deep seawater compared to high-oxygen sopor (similar to how equatorial trees tend to have broad leaves while taiga trees tend to have needles). Fish gills are a pretty good design for this - it could easily be a matter of convergent evolution, with ancient seatrolls’ breathing patches becoming more and more complex as they adapted to deeper and deeper waters.
