Happy Homecoming Ian and Barbara- 26th June.
The Chalet School heat
I'm currently (re)-reading The Coming of Age of the Chalet School where it's the summer term and hot. And then they mention during the Sale that it's 97F = 36C. Given that today is 34C here and likely to be 36C the next couple of days that is really hot!
(Although of course the problem here is the night time temperatures, the lack of much night this time of year and the humidity - I imagine the Swiss Alps are less humid and more breezy)
(I have also googled while reading and now know what clock golf and a twin set are)
Kate headcanon
I came up with a load of head canon for Kate's backstory for my Unconventional Courtship fic, but most of it never made it into the story. So here it is.
Kate met her ex-husband at a bridge club. She had no intention of getting married, but she fell pregnant with their daughter. Given that Gordy's father had buggered off and not really been seen since (that bit is canon from the Downtime book), she married him for some stability.
He blames the breaking down of their marriage on her always working late. But part of the reason she was working late was to avoid going home, since things weren't right between the two of them.
The breaking point came when he accused her of being a bad mother, due to her never being at home, and she threw him out. He tried to get custody, but she told both children the truth and they were old enough to choose for themselves who they lived with.
At the same time as all this was going on she was trying to make UNIT science led and didn't want her personal life to jeopardise that, so she didn't tell anyone until the divorce was final and everything was sorted. And even then she made out that it was a simple divorce and everything was fine.
Unconventional Courtship fic
I managed to finish my Unconventional Courtship fic and post it on the right day!
The UNIT Article (2929 words) by paranoidangel Fandom: Doctor Who (2005), Sarah Jane Adventures Rating: General Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Kate Lethbridge-Stewart/Sarah Jane Smith Characters: Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, Sarah Jane Smith Additional Tags: Friends to Lovers Summary: In this UNIT story, Kate has spent years healing from a divorce and her children leaving home by throwing herself into her work at UNIT. But when Sarah Jane—her one-time best friend and secret crush—takes a job as a journalist at UNIT, life suddenly becomes more complicated! After the breakdown of her difficult wedding Sarah Jane isn’t looking for romance either. Yet old feelings soon begin to resurge. Can they risk their friendship in the hope of something more?
Barbara Wright -> The Aztecs
I'm working on my Unconventional Courtship fic (having left it to the last minute after some writer's block that will hopefully stay away long enough for me to finish it). The summaries always end in a question of whether they'll get together. In a romance book of course the answer is yes. But with this, it could be any answer, of course.
The trouble I'm having is deciding which answer. It's gone from 'the summary makes it clear it's a no' to 'I want it to be a yes' to 'perhaps it could be a not now but maybe in the future'.
I feel like it would be easier to write if I was a romantic, rather than a sceptic.
Sarah Jane Smith -> Genesis of the Daleks
oh, mother barbara...
this literally being in a "filler" serial too...
you know what, no wonder the doctor mainly has female companions to set him in his place.

Ian Chesterton -> The Chase

TARDIS Remix fics
This went live, so I can reveal I wrote two remixes:
The World Changes (Sky Stays the Same) (1141 words) by paranoidangel Fandom: Sarah Jane Adventures Rating: General Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Characters: Sarah Jane Smith, Clyde Langer, Sky Smith Additional Tags: Remix, Cooking Lessons Summary: Clyde cooks and Sarah Jane dispenses advice.
The original includes an author's note about never having seen the episodes with Sky in. So I thought a fun way to remix it would be to say that post-canon she's still around and therefore add her in.
Making History (The Archaeological Antics Remix) (692 words) by paranoidangel Fandom: Doctor Who (1963) Rating: General Audiences Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: Ian Chesterton/Barbara Wright Characters: Barbara Wright, Ian Chesterton Additional Tags: Remix, Serial: s012 The Romans (Doctor Who) Summary: Ian attempts to find a way to make history.
The original here was a drabble, so it was easy to expand it. The original ws also suggesting to me that we see what happened later, so I added that too.
I finally chose a summary for Unconventional Courtship:
In this UNIT story, Kate has spent years healing from a divorce and the end of her fertility journey* by throwing herself into her work at UNIT. But when Sarah Jane—her one-time best friend and secret crush—takes a job as a journalist at UNIT, life suddenly becomes more complicated! After the breakdown of her complicated wedding Sarah Jane isn’t looking for romance either. Yet old feelings soon begin to resurge. Can they risk their friendship in the hope of something more?
*still need to decide how I'm going to interpret that. Maybe her kids moving out
But it's a handy summary for having no idea how it's going. They could decide to stay as friends or get together. And one or both can be happy or unhappy about that. I have yet to decide how it's going to go. But I'm sure aliens will be involved.
The point is that descriptive writing is very rarely entirely accurate and during the reign of Olaf Quimby II as Patrician of Ankh some legislation was passed in a determined attempt to put a stop to this sort of thing and introduce some honesty into reporting. Thus, if a legend said of a notable hero that ‘all men spoke of his prowess’ any bard who valued his life would add hastily ‘except for a couple of people in his home village who thought he was a liar, and quite a lot of other people who had never really heard of him.’ Poetic simile was strictly limited to statements like ‘his mighty steed was as fleet as the wind on a fairly calm day, say about Force Three,’ and any loose talk about a beloved having a face that launched a thousand ships would have to be backed by evidence that the object of desire did indeed look like a bottle of champagne.
-- Terry Pratchett - The Light Fantastic
Unconventional Courtship is open for sign ups! It's an excellent opportunity to have fun with a Mills & Boon/Harlequin summary and answer the question of whether they'll get together with a no. Even if I haven't decided what to write yet.
