Kaatru Veliyidai

What a beautiful movie! I have to say with this movie, I truly realized the brilliance of Mani Ratnam. There’s depth, there’s silence, there’s love and there’s magic. There is pain and longing of a man yearning for his lost love. It starts with the man’s recklessness, his masculinity but his immaturity. The opposite, there’s a woman’s femininity, maturity and forgiveness. The story travels through the courting phase to the happy phase to the dark phase and ultimately to the destruction phase. Yet, there is beauty and poetry in all of it. A.R Rahman’s music and Mani Ratnam’s picturisation of all the songs deserve mention. You lose yourself in this world and don’t ever want to leave the feeling that is love.

Comrade in America

Watched this movie today, and though it started on a slightly boring note, it sure picked up! With a political backdrop of communism, the movie moves to a love story, where the handsome and principled protagonist falls and follows his ladylove from Kerala all the way to the US. But not via the usual route of India to US as there’s no time for visas and passports before his ladylove may be married off, but a route from India to Nicaragua, Honduras, Mexico and US and mostly by foot! The journey is what makes this film absolutely memorable! What a film! And what a director! Can’t imagine anyone showing the crossing of the Mexico-US border in this light, I was gaping at some of the scenes he’s pulled off. The climax puts a huge smile on your face and makes you fall in love with Dulquer Salmaan yet again! Recommended!

*PS Special mention to the fight sequence at the bus exchange, reminded me of Telugu cinema!

Anger: Something I have always had to deal with is my own anger and how I behave in certain situations. Dulquer’s nuances - reluctant smile at the nagging customer, gritting teeth while screaming quietly in the men’s loo, getting irritable with the printer sound, all resonated with me and he’s done a brilliant job of portraying Sidhu. 

Sai is the strong woman, the steady, stable, grounded anchor he needs in his life who guides him along the way. She walks toe to toe with Dulquer and has performed beautifully. As a young husband and wife, they both have amazing chemistry and understanding and are a treat to watch, both being sweet and extremely likeable.

First half is breezy, slowly building on the anger issues and setting up the premise for a thrilling, edge of the seat second half which just goes to show where anger can lead you. In the end, it doesn’t preach you to control anger in all circumstances, but yes to express anger in correct proportions.
