Julián Ríos Cantú knows all too well about the importance of early and accurate breast cancer detection. The 19-year-old’s mother survived two bouts with breast cancer, despite an inaccurate diagnosis. In 2013, Cantú’s mother was told the lumps she found in her breast were not malignant. Six months later, another mammogram found they were actually cancerous and she subsequently had both breasts removed. Cantú’s friend Antonio Torres’ grandmother had also experienced his grandmother’s battle with breast cancer. Cantú began researching breast cancer and early detection. Armed with information and an idea for a new technology, Cantú invented EVA, a bra that uses thermal technology to detect breast cancer. Now he and Torres, who both live in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, have established Higia Technologies and are working together to make the EVA accessible to all women. What is the EVA Bra? While it may look like your average sports bra, the EVA bra was invented to help detect breast cancer early. Cantú, who is the CEO and Co-Founder of Higia Technologies which makes the bra, recently explained the science behind the EVA to Parentology. “Tumors surround themselves with blood vessels to obtain oxygen and nutrients in order to continue growing,” Cantú says. “The blood is the main heat fluid in the body, more blood, more temperature.” The EVA bra uses 192 thermal sensors to analyze how the temperature in the breast is flowing. Data is used to map heat distributions across patients’ breasts. This information is used in conjunction with an app that sends the findings to the EVA wearer’s tablet or phone. If the bra detects a cause for concern, an advisory is sent to call one’s doctor to get checked out further. Women need to wear the bra for 60-90 minutes a week to get an accurate result. Is the EVA Bra Accurate? More than 350 patients have undergone clinical trials using the bra with an 81.7% specificity rate. But, more testing needs to be done. The BBC reports some in the medical field acknowledge while tumors sometimes do have an abnormal system of blood vessels, increased blood flow isn’t always a sign of cancer. So far, feedback to the EVA bra has been overwhelmingly positive. Cantú says he just wants to make sure no women suffer the way his mother did with a late-stage breast cancer diagnosis. The World Cancer Research Fund reports there were more than two million new cases of breast cancer diagnosed around the world in 2018 alone. Here in the U.S., the American Cancer Society estimates over 42,000 people will die from breast cancer in 2019. While the EVA is not on the market yet, women interested can pre-order to be first in line once the bra goes on sale. Higia hopes to have it available in Mexico by the end of this year. No word when it may be available in the US. Time will only tell how far this 19-year-old will take his company and quest to improve the lives of women battling breast cancer, and possibly those fighting other diseases. Cantú says EVA is only the beginning. “We’re on a mission to empower people to own their health.”

How to Protect Your Kid from Predators if They Go into Showbiz
As someone who writes about Hollywood for a living, I’m asked this all the time: “How do I get my child into movies?” Or into modelling, on TV shows, theatrical tours – you name it.
My first advice is to make sure both you and your child wants to do it, because it’s hard work. There are strong personalities to navigate, along with rejection, unstable income, pressure to look and act a certain way, and hundreds of other obstacles you can’t predict.
There are also predators in the business. Just ask Corey Feldman.
How You Can Learn from Corey Feldman
Corey Feldman started acting at age three. Throughout his childhood, he appeared in over 100 commercials and on 50 television series, as well as high-grossing movies likeGremlins, The Goonies, Stand By Me, and The Lost Boys. He also struggled with drug addiction and, as an adult, revealed that the cause of his addiction was the child sex abuse he endured.
Feldman has stated that his father’s assistant molested him and introduced him to drugs. Feldman has also accused his childhood agent Marty Weiss, actor and former personal assistant Cloyd Jon Grissom, and former talent agent Alphy Hoffman, of having sexually abused him.
Feldman’s experience of being sexually molested by a number of people while he was one of the hottest young stars on the planet should give any parent concern—but it should especially concern parents whose children are in showbusiness.
Steps to Protecting Your Child
It should go without saying, but be vigilant to your child’s work life. No matter how much you like the producers, director or crew, monitor your child’s time -- with their acting coach, their time on set, and the jobs they are going out for. Encourage your child to talkabout their activities, and discuss anything that made them uncomfortable during the work day. This is good for helping them digest the adult pressures they face, as well as giving them the opportunity to tell you if something improper happened.
Why is that important?
“They report [sexual abuse],” Karen C. Rogers, PhD, of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, tells Parentology. “[This] is the one child behavior most highly correlated with sexual abuse.” So if you give them the opportunity to talk, they’ll often take it.
The organization Stop It Now!concurs. They state, “Thank the child for telling you. Let them know you love them. If the disclosure is hard to believe, keep reminding yourself that false disclosures are rare. If you absolutely feel you need more information, think of the first step: stay calm.”
Trust your gut. Don’t be separated from your child due to the wishes of a famous or powerful person. Do not be seduced by the fame of any Hollywood type who wants to spend time with your son or daughter alone. Be strong. Be fierce. Be there with your child. A predator is not going to act with a parent standing nearby.
There Is Hope
No parent wants to hear that their child has been sexually abused, but if it does happen there is hope.
“The children whose parents believe their report and take steps to protect them, those kids are likely, over time, to be fine,” says Dr. Rogers.
Corey Feldman is an example of that. He now acts as an ambassador for Child USA, which aims to help victims find their voice. Child USA does that by trying to change the statutes of limitations so that the children who are survivors, and particularly those who are adult survivors, get a chance to see justice. The issue today is that by the time an abused child is ready to come forward, it is frequently many years later when the statute of limitations has passed. Feldman is working to get other victims of childhood sexual abuse the justice he was denied.
If you or your child need further support, there are organizations that can help. RAINN (Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network) is the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization.RAINN operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 800-656-HOPE. You can call them with questions as well.
How to Keep Kids Busy While Traveling without Relying on Tech
It’s easy to get parenting advice from family and friends – because everyone seems to have an opinion on how to handle a child. This is especially true when it comes to traveling with little ones, who bore easily and can drive everyone (including yourself) a little cray.
While most parents turn to an iPad or tablet for quick distraction, sometimes that’s not an option. Studies have shown that children may be too young to use digital devices for extended periods of time.
So, what do you do if the easy solution isn’t an option – or just doesn’t work?
We did some digging and found four celebrity couples who have a knack for keeping their kids busy while traveling, as well as some other fun tips. Maybe one of these methods will work for you on your next road trip or flight.
1. Mario Lopez and Courtney Mazza Lopez
Extra host Mario Lopez and his wife Courtney are parents to eight-year-old Gia and five-year-old Dominic. Mario told People magazine that his kids have always been well behaved on planes. They enjoy watching movies and playing games on their iPads. Courtney also stocks up on goodies from the $1 section at Target and packs a bag of candy for emergencies.
2. Thomas Rhett and Lauren Akins
Country singer Thomas Rhett and his wife Lauren have known each other since the second grade. They are parents to three-year-old Willa Gray, who was adopted from Uganda, and 18-month-old Ada James. Lauren will try anything and everything while traveling until she finds something that works.
“From coloring dinosaurs or drawing our family, to iPads and walking up and down the airplane aisles. We’ll play ‘I Spy’ or snack – A LOT – or meet new people who keep us entertained. We do it all! Also, trying to save nap time until we hit the road is key. And sometimes, even after all that, they’re still not entertained! Welcome to parenting. At that point, you just hope for the best and count all the small victories as a win!”
3. Christy Carlson Romano and Brendan Rooney
Actress Christy Carlson Romano’s secret weapon is over-packing so she's prepared for anything, but that doesn’t help if the baby just won’t sleep. She and her husband Brendan Rooney are parents to two-year-old Isabella, and just welcomed Sophia Elizabeth into the fold this February.
So how does this power couple cope? On a recent flight back to Los Angeles from Australia,Christy used an inflatable seat extender to make an in-flight bed for Isabella. Genius!
4. Lais Ribeiro
Lais Ribeiro is a Brazilian model and Victoria’s Secret Angel who is mom to 10-year-old Alexandre. She said flights are challenging for a boy with lots of energy. Alexandre packs a book bag full of toys, as well as an iPad with headphones, to keep himself entertained on long travel days.
More Travel Tips for Parents
1. Get good headphones. The JBL JR300BT fits over the ear and keeps volume at a safe level for young ears.
2. Pack plenty of snacks.SuperfoodsRX – the doctors who created the Super Foods craze in America – have some great options that kids will love.
3. Try a magnetic travel game pack. From chess to checkers, you can play games and worry less about losing a piece.
4. Give your kids that old digital camera. Since you probably use your phone now, that old camera can be a fun way for your child to learn about photography.
5. Bring digital comics. Your kids love the movies and TV shows, let them enjoy comics on the road. Amazon owns comiXology, which features unlimited comics from many different publishers, the DC Comics app has a number of books for young readers but you have to pay on a per-book basis, andMarvel Unlimited features unlimited comic books for a monthly fee. Be sure to check the parental controls before letting your child loose.
6. Have a conversation with your kids… about the trip. Print out some info about your destination and have them help you plan an outing or two. Your reservations can be made in advance (they don’t need to know that), but this planning will get them excited about what’s to come and let them feel like they’re a part of the travel process.
10 Child Prodigies Who Accomplished More Than You Before They Turned 18
For about a decade now, we’ve been confronted with impossibly young entrepreneurs starting companies and becoming billionaires.
Mark Zuckerberg, for instance, was a programming prodigy in middle school and built a primitive version of something eerily similar to AOL Instant Messenger before he could legally drive a car. By the time he was 23, he was a billionaire.
If this makes you wonder where you went wrong, you’re not alone. Prodigies are wonderful, but they sure do make us regular folk feel like slackers.Unlike the Kim Kardashians of the world, child prodigies really do have something special. Whether it's composing a symphony at eight-years-old, developing a whole new language at 15, or getting through medical school before puberty, these 10 child prodigies are simply amazing.
1. Mary Shelley
Wrote Frankenstein at 18
Think of your average 17-year-old. Now, imagine that young girl pregnant. She’s more likely to end up on MTV’s Teen Mom series than she is to write a classic novel that is still read two centuries later. In the early 1800s, Mary Shelley was recently married and saddled with a newborn child when she sat down and wrote Frankenstein.
2. Louis Braille
Developed Braille at 15
Louis Braille lost his sight in an accident when he was a child. He spent his childhood in the Royal Institution for Blind Youth in Paris. It was one of the first schools for the blind in the world. Braille was determined to read again and help other blind people read. So, he consulted with the French military about a system of writing they were developing. This system allowed soldiers on the battlefield to read in darkness. Braille co-opted the method and set out to create a system specifically for the blind. It took him three years, and he finished it before he turned 15.
3. Bobby Fischer
World Chess Champion at 14
Bobby Fischer won the World Chess Championship at the age of 14. The following year he became the youngest Grandmaster of the game. He went on to become the highest-ranked player in history. He is still considered to be the greatest chess player of all time.
4. Pablo Picasso
Painted a masterpiece at 14
When Pablo Picasso was a child, he reportedly told his teachers he would only go to school if they let him draw whatever he wanted. At age 12 he wasn’t allowed to enter a children’s art exhibit because he drew too well. When he was 14, he had already painted the Portrait of Aunt Pepa, which is considered one of the greatest Spanish paintings of all time.
5. Greg Smith
Nominated for Nobel Prize at 12
At 12-years-old, most of us are just trying to navigate junior high school and our hormones. Gregory Smith was nominated for his first Nobel Prize at age 12. He is now about 28 and he’s been nominated for three Nobels. He sailed through elementary school in a year. By the time he was seven he was in high school. He enrolled in college at 10 to study advanced level physics, calculus, and French.
6. Stevie Wonder
Recorded music at age 12
Stevie Wonder was born blind and grew up in poverty. Yet, nothing could keep him away from music. He learned to compose, sing, play the piano, organ, drums, and harmonica in early childhood. He began recording and performing professionally in 1962, at the age of 12. By the time he was 21 he'd written or co-written more than a dozen hit songs. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989 at age 38.
7. Elizabeth Benson
Scored Highest Ever IQ at 8
When Elizabeth Benson was eight-years-old, she scored a 214+ on her IQ test. The plus is there because after she answered every single question correctly, the test proctors gave up. When she was 13, she wrote a novel that was reviewed by Vanity Fair.
8. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Wrote a symphony at 8
It only took Mozart eight years of life to write his first symphony. By 17 he was a musician in the Salzburg Court.
9. AkritJaswal
Child Surgeon at 7
AkritJaswalis the youngest college student and physician in India’s history. He was performing surgeries by the time he was seven-years-old. Today he is 25 and working on a cure for cancer.
10. Tristan Pang
Math Master at 2
It is hard to quantify Tristan Pang’s intelligence. Born in 2001, he was reading and doing high school math at the age of 2. At 9, he scored a 97% on the Cambridge International Examination in math. He gave a TEDxYouth talk, started college at the University of Auckland, and created a free online learning platform, "Tristan’s Learning Hub" by the time he was 12.

12 Best Celeb Parenting Hacks Everyone Should Know About
Parenting is a good thing, but it's also hard work. Which means, parents can use all the help they can get. Especially in their early years when they're often so sleep-deprived that we end up hallucinating.
You know who isn’t exempt from the hectic life of parenting? Celebrities. Whether you’re an account executive, a real-estate winner, or the star of a network television show, being a parent is the same. While we often turn to celebs for gossip, silly stories, orinspiration, they also turn out someclever parenting hacks and tricks that can make your life easier.
1. Kristen Bell
Kristen Bell is never afraid to talk about how challenging (and rewarding) it is to be a mom. She shared a parenting hack that made so much sense we had to pass it along. When her kids get out of the car, she says, “Hands on the circle.” The circle refers to the gas cap. If the kids’ hands are on it, they're safe from oncoming traffic while Bell unloads the trunk.
2. Chrissy Teigen
Chrissy Teigen is #parentinggoals. She isn’t afraid to tell it like it is. One of her best parenting hacks is about her baby’s bath time. If your baby doesn’t like bath time, bathe him or her with their swaddle blanket, which has been shown to calm a child. This will soothe them, and the muslin fabric is lightweight and breathable, allowing the water to soak through.
3. Kim Kardashian
When Kim Kardashian West brought Saint home, her daughter North was extremely jealous. Obviously, the new baby was getting a lot of mom’s attention, especially since she was breastfeeding. Kim slipped a milk box with a straw into her bra so that North could “nurse” alongside Saint.
4. Hilary Duff
One given of parenting is that we need to be prepared for anything. Hilary Duff, like many moms, brings along extra clothing in case of diaper messes. However, when her son Luca had a major diaper explosion on an airplane, she didn’t have a change of clothes for herself. Unfortunately, she wore the contents of Luca’s diaper for the last 90 minutes of her flight. Yuck! Now, she carries an extra t-shirt in her bag.
5. Busy Philips
Busy Philips is mom to daughters Cricket and Birdie. She uses the sibling rivalry between her girls to get the outcome she wants. She told Us Weekly, "I'm like, 'I feel like Cricket's going to finish her broccoli first,' and then Birdie's like, 'I can finish it first."
6. Sarah Michelle Gellar
Sarah Michelle Gellar learned how to curb food waste early on. When her daughter asked for a cup of milk and then didn't drink, she made her pay -- literally. She told her that every time she asked for a cup of milk and didn’t drink it, she would take a quarter out of her piggy bank. After all, someone has to pay for the milk.
7. Melissa McCarthy
It's important to keep the romance alive with your significant other and that can be hard during the hectic days of parenting. Melissa McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone schedule date night to coincide with the “early bird special.” That way, they're home early enough to put their kids to bed. And, they aren’t too tired to get up and make their girls breakfast in the morning.
8. Melissa Joan Hart
There's no pain quite like the pain of stepping on a Lego, and with three sons, Melissa Joan Hart knows this pain all too well. Taking matters into her own hands, she now uses a hanging jewelry organizer to store and separate Legos. The clear fronts on the compartments make it easy for her sons to see which Legos they want to use.
9. Tamera Mowry
Getting kids to bed can be a challenge. Tamera Mowry sets a bedtime routine for her kids. She wrote on her blog, "If you want a baby that will sleep through the night, the first step is getting them to fall asleep, and keep that routine to create consistency in their lives.” She also uses a sound machine to make her kids feel more at ease.
10. Drew Barrymore
Drew Barrymore uses a calendar to make it clear to her kids when she'll be away from home traveling or working. She explained her process in an Instagram post: “I circle with a sharpie every day I will be traveling. And I ask her to mark the day with an ‘X’ once it’s done. That way she can see that I am gone at first, still away in the middle, and then coming back towards the end. She now has a good sense of my geographic place from the globe. She knows when I am leaving and coming home."
11. Elka Graham Whalan
Olympic Swimmer ElkaWhalan is a mom of four. She came up with a great way to limit the junk food her kids eat. “Sometimes food” is cookies, juice, candy and things of this nature. “Everyday food” is healthier options. This way her kids associate the food they should be eating every day at a young age, forming good habits from the start.
12. Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis
When Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher had their second child, they bought a special crib to help get Dimitri to sleep. They got a “smart sleeper” crib called the Snoo. A sensor in it makes it move faster the louder the baby cries and puts them back to sleep.
Childhood Opioid Overdoses: It's Not Just an Adult Crisis
When it comes to teenage addictions, the media often focuses on topics like social media addiction or more traditional drug and alcohol addictions. There’s no question that these are serious topics.
However, opioid addiction is growing among young people. While the epidemic’s impact on adults and communitieshas been widely reported and is well known, the threats to children are just as severe and alarming.
Understanding Opioids
Opioidsare a class of pain-relieving drugs that can be used for medical reasons. Common medications include morphine, fentanyl oxycodone, hydrocodone, oxymorphone and codeine. These powerful drugs generally do the trick – delivering relief from the pain – but side-effects can include constipation, drowsiness, nausea, euphoria and slowed breathing.
Doctors generally prescribe thesemedicationsto children to treat severe pain, especially after surgery. While it’s assumed that parents are monitoring their children’s prescription drug intake, long-term use for legitimate purposes can inadvertentlylead to addiction.
The Dangers of Opioids in Children and Teenagers
In the last 20 years there has been an almost three-fold increase in mortality rates among children and teens in the United States due to opioids— with close to 9000 losing their lives. Indeed, a Yale study revealed that the mortality rate increased by268.2% between 1999 and 2016.
“For older teens, deaths from heroin increased more than 400% over the span of 18 years, while deaths from fentanyl increased by nearly 3,000%,” Julie Gather, one of the study’s authors, told Parentology. She also noted that 1 in 4 deaths occurred among children under the age of 5, while1 in 3 deaths were due to homicide or criminal neglect.
These last statistics are important because they point out that not all opioid-related deaths are due to addiction overdoses. A common factor is children finding a parent’s drugs and ingesting a pill that looks like candy.
The Yale study focused on deaths nationally in the U.S, so researchers weren’t able to pinpoint specific states that had the highest percentage of deaths. However, Gathersays, “Preliminary data reveals that the Northeast had the highest rate of death in both 1999 and 2016.”
Things You Can Do to Stop Overdoses
If you’re a parent or grandparent with young children around, keep your medications locked up tight. We all know that “child-proof” bottle caps won’t stop a persistent kid from getting inside.
Regarding older kids, it’s good to be aware of their behavior and notice any major changes, such as:
1. Extremely strong mood swings
2. Finishing prescriptions early
3. Changes in sleep patterns
4. Needle marks on arms or legs
5. Withdrawing from social activities
6. Hanging out with suspicious, new people
7. Visiting multiple doctors
8. Flushed, itchy skin
9. Slurred speech
10. Agitation and irritability
If you see these signs, have a conversation with your child. If that goes nowhere, contact their school or a pediatrician for help. By Alicea James

12 MANNERS EVERY KID SHOULD KNOW
