I love my fish so so so much, and I never shut up about them, so it was about time to make a dedicated blog for it.

I specialize in true blackwater. My tanks are modeled after SEA peat swamps (<6pH, 0kH, 0gH) and the fish that live in them, such as Parosphromenus, and a few types of wild betta - currently limited to hands on experience with b. Dimidiata, and b. Miniopinna (aka b. Persephone cf “bintan”). I also have a few clearwater tanks, and a reef tank, but they are side projects.

I am a member of the parosphromenus project, and am slated to be a ex-situ conservationist for IPLN when it launches. I intend to use my parosphromenus posting as a sort of awareness booster, for this rare and relatively unknown species, as well as general interest in ethical fish keeping!

Eyeing a parosphromenus sp that popped up on a fish import site. Undescribed fish from an island of indonesia that has very incomplete information on their native fish. All I can judge based on the lone picture is they’re bintan complex - the complex I’m most equipped to care for. And I’m wondering if I keep and breed them I could ship off specimens to help get them officially described, or if I’m biting off more than I can chew. I have genuinely no way to know if that sort of thing is already in progress, or if its just a mislabeling.

I lost my last eel addition, m. Panculas, because I couldn’t get him to start eating - so my circs eating readily on day one is such a relief. Baby nation forever.

hello!! aspiring spiny eel (namely peacock and fire eels) keeper here, ive been trying to collect info on their care and seeing as you have a lot of experience, would you perhaps have any advice?

I’ve never had a fire eel, but I have had a peacock eel for 7 years now. I honestly don’t think their care is too intensive. Some tips.

Bloodworms and blackworms are the go to for food. Making a blackworm culture will make your life soooo easy.

Soft substrate only. Sand, aquasoil, peat, thick mulm, that sort of stuff. They drag their soft bellies on the ground very often, and you don’t want them getting torn up by gravel. I wouldn’t recommend rounded gravel either, or blasting sand either. They burrow in substrate when scared, and if they get hurt doing it, they’ll burrow more to hide while injured, making a compounding problem

Hand feeding is great. If you can’t get them to hand feed, or don’t want to, inject worms into the substrate with a kids medicine syringe. Their hunting instincts will go nuts

Don’t feed daily. Every other day is best. Eels readily put on weight and can’t really lose it. I’ve heard stories of their skin splitting from overeating

Lids are a MUST. I’ve lost an eel to a gap in the lid, and I’ve watched my eel jump out right in front of me one time when I opened the lid. They can get some real distance.

Pvc tubes are their favorite thing in the entire world

Eels are dog shit swimmers. Too strong of a filter and you’ll see them get blown around by it.

Hotdog sees a shrimp for the first time in his life

Hotdog is a very ill rescue betta I’m rehabbing. I’m aware he looks really awful, I’m working on it! He came from an unfiltered and uncycled 2.5 gallon tank, and is now in a filtered and cycled 5 gallon planted tank with tannins, and a lot of hides for him :)
