starira EOS got me thinking about how revue starlight helps me get my job
it's really empowering on a journey of finding the self
also factoid: people quit their jobs because of revue starlight
so whichever ways, the impact is piercing. very happy to have revue starlight in my life.
bushiroad extended universe
hey guys wouldn't it be really funny if LGBTQ+ showed up as one of the first tags on el dorado on steam like it does for revue starlight on hidive
here's the steam page https://store.steampowered.com/app/2849960/_/
revstar OST is so good i need a video essayist who knows shit about music theory to make a 2 hour video on it for the normies bc i sure as hell dont know shit about music theory
not quite a 2 hour video (although i might do that in the future), but here's a blog post i made about the revstar OST. note that there are a LOT of things i missed in this post (like just how much of pride and arrogance shows up in maya and claudine's movie revue), but i think i hit all the big points!
It’s finally here! The post you and I have awaited for months! I’m so glad I finally decided to actually do some work on this because it has
people have got to listen to synthesis (tn-shi)
My analysis of the concept of Fate with Hikari and Karen, with some meta-analysis
"We found our fate." - Claire Hikari Kagura
“Once again, the bonds of the stars that bring us together can bring about a miracle” - RE:CREATE
→ bond of star → starlight → grant wishes → miracle of claire and Flora
Fate as Cyclical
it’s the occurrence of the journey of claire and flora together that is the miracle, not the starlight
Fate is a series of habits/actions/ from one’s perception of self in relation to the world. Unless one’s change (drastically, enough, even to the point of rebirth), one’s fate cannot change because oneself is bound to the status quo of the self. So if one can change the mindset of oneself, then the mindset will carry out the actions that most align with that mindset, and the series of deliberate actions will shape a lifestyle, and then even the future (in fate). The hardest thing is to change one’s mind.
Karen would not be able to reunite with Hikari on the stage of Starlight at Seishou Academy, if she did not also sacrifice her youth to doing theater extracurriculars and apply to top schools in Japan in theatre such as Seisho Music Academy and Seiran General Art Institute. The power of perseverance or is it stubbornness or stagnancy.
Fate as caused by sin
When fate agonize on you, it’s a tragedy, because it’s predetermined and known beforehand (to outsiders and the audience)
Fate does and does not grant the wish from favor.
Wishing for fate is particular to the eye of the beholder.
So when fate punishes you, you punish yourself for your actions and your circumstances for not lining up with your ideals of fate, and then the lesson you learn from the lack of miracles is specific to oneself.
Sin is also in the eye of the beholder. If one is not aware of one’s sin, and consider oneself sinless, then one’s grasp on oneself is flawed. The concept of sin is to criticize your past actions and not recommit the sin. A sin is not eternal, sinning is and there’s no escape. (Unrelated quote about sin: "I accept that my sin has created this tragic fate..” - Zeus Maya Tendo )
Again, Karen’s sin is that she forever chase Hikari, and there is merit in her chase, because of the countless skills and experiences she gain along the way journeying through the desert. But the most important lesson has yet to be learn.
How can Karen close off that chapter of her life that started 12 years ago if it’s not with Hikari on the stage of Starlight?
Fate as the hands of the audience
Miracles really is the accumulation of little miracles you encounter in life. Such as daily or weekly or monthly, you bump into an old classmate that you wish you gotten better, you both staying in the same area suggest something in common about each other’s circumstances or mindset, even if it’s not daily or weekly or monthly, if you occur upon someone who you do not ordinarily meet two or three or five time for the rest of your life, that’s fate, at least you meet them once more since the beginning encounter/circumstance.
Sooner or later, Karen would have bumped into Hikari, in middle school, or college, or adult life, or when they’re both old. Karen may learn along her life of the hole left by Hikari, there is no singular string of word to accurately describe what Karen need out of Hikari to close that chapter of her life, a “destined stage of Starlight with two of them as co-leads”. In middle school, maybe they would’ve gotten their chance of doing Starlight together in a small local production, and Karen would’ve gotten over that itch of Starlight with Hikari, but the dependence on Hikari is still there, or Karen’s attachment to the play Starlight is still there, any hundreds of interpretations of Karen’s missing part, Karen’s lack of focus of her stage being that of herself and her own trajectory is still there, a word to summarize crudely would be stagnancy. Maybe as adults in college, they would’ve examine critically through many lenses of literatures and stage plays productions, and maybe their shade of Starlight is tinged with the lack of elaborate and the further gap of how she idealize her first viewed Starlight production and current day Starlight’s production: a 2-person only self-hosted production of Starlight only for themselves, and Karen realize that she does not yearn for Starlight the play.
It is such that the fate that the audience wants to play out the most is the quiet tragedy of Karen clinging to Starlight the play and quietly her flame of passion dies out from straying of its source (Hikari or the original Starlight experience or Karen’s sudden baby brain gravitating intensely to theater as an interest) and the tragedy of Hikari getting her starlight stolen in RATA (the details I am not too clear on but we will discover more in El Dorado I hope). It is the in-universe audience’s wish for the fate of Karen and Hikari to intertwine to create the most entertaining version of Starlight any of Karen or Hikari could do for the rest of their life. The chemistry between Karen, Hikari, and Starlight is the focus because it is the most tragic and the most captivating play. The quiet flame dying out changed into the most rewarding experience of closure (of starlight the play with Hikari and karen as the leads from the ending of the anime and closure-closure (of Hikari and Karen as individuals and their growth in embracing her trajectory as the stage’s focus in gekijouban). What more could WE the audience wants?
Sooner or later, Karen would have bumped into Hikari, otherwise Hikari and Karen would’ve left a bookmark in a chapter of their life that would drive the audience disappointed. Karen will learn the lesson, but in a more unpleasant way, in life.
Fate as fate
Fate is everything except the thing it suggest. What’s written in the stars. Predestination. Luck. Outcome. Demise.
When fate agonizes on you, it’s a tragedy. When fate meets you halfway, it’s serendipitous.
And we desire for the serendipitous meeting of Hikari’s transferring to Seisho Academy, to perform their Starlight.
What does Karen mean when she says "I am Reborn"?
Revue Starlight takes place in a time loop.
For over 60 years, eight students from Seisho’s acting class continue to audition to be the lead in the Starlight Gatherer, each hoping to use the brilliance awarded to the top star to fulfill their wish to perform on the Stage of Fate. And in each of those loops, very little changes. The same leads are chosen, the same wish is made, and Aijou Karen is at the bottom of the rankings every time.
Nothing changes until one loop where Kagura Hikari transfers to their school from London and replaces Karen as one of the eight participants in the audition, and suddenly everything is changing.
Hikari’s return lights a spark in Karen. The childhood promise they made to perform on stage together is the closest it’s ever been to happening, and Karen refuses to waste this chance.
In the first episode, we don’t get a very flattering picture of Karen. Her roommate struggles to wake her up to get to morning practice, Karen is stiff as a board while stretching, she’s not taken seriously by her classmates at all, and she can’t even picture herself ever beating Maya or Claudine for the lead roles in the play. Don’t get me wrong, her classmates all like her and honestly she’s really funny to watch, but everyone is here because they want to be the star, not to fool around.
It comes to a head when the giraffe who runs the underground auditions points it out. She’s not desperate like the other girls so she has no chance of winning. He says that there is no place for someone like Karen to have a chance at that dream stage.
But Karen doesn’t care. She ignores the giraffe entirely and jumps on stage to join Hikari. And as she falls, she undergoes a transformation, going from her school uniform to the revue outfit.
There’s a lot to be said about the transformation sequence, like how quick and mechanical and impersonal everything is. Machines sew the costumes and get everything ready and makeup is briefly applied. It’s all the work that would usually be given to the school’s Class B, which works on all the backstage stuff, like the props and the sets and the costumes. They’re out of focus a lot of the time and we only really focus on two characters from Class B, but they still exist! They’re friends with the main class A actors and in the movie it’s because of a speech the director of the play gives that the main characters decide to stand up on stage again. But they don’t matter to the audition. It only cares about the top star.
There’s also how the uniforms are mass manufactured and the very important star buttons, which signify victory or defeat so basically life or death, are unceremoniously tossed in a box, showing how disposable the rest of the stage girls are in creating the top star. Honestly the whole thing is kind of sinister in hindsight once you understand the true nature of the auditions.
But the part that’s all Karen is when she jumps and in the background it says: I am reborn.
umiri and lu bu comparison because they're like wild dogs with allegiance with their own will until they're bounded to their warlord (and then lu bu did defect again, from dong zhuo, and defected many more times, we will see about umiri)
wild comparison but this was just started because of umiri's untamed hair remind me of the antenna helmet of lu bu
