This isn't a poll meant to survey the fandom about their favorite KH stories (which is why I've only listed two games here), I just personally can't decide which game story I think is better and I figured I'd ask people for their opinions. Manhunt Final Thoughts

I'm so conflicted about this show. The Civil War is one of the most fascinating eras in American history, and quite literally the hinge on which all of modern American politics rests. I was so excited to watch but after the first few episodes it felt like the writing devolved into historical fanfiction territory. I was really disappointed that the show decided to lean into the conspiracy theory that the entire assassination was a plot by Jefferson Davis, when they'd already established Booth was a racist, delusional narcissist who would have absolutely been insane enough to plot something like this purely out of fanatical devotion to the Confederacy. Given the clear Trump allusion they made in the scene where Stanton talks to Sanders, it would have been a powerful representation of how individuals become radicalized on their own. Not to mention the scene where they throw a party celebrating the publishing of Elizabeth Keckley's tell all book, which in real life led to her ostracization from society and permanent estrangement from the Lincoln family for revealing too much of what she knew about their private affairs. Pure historical fanfic.

At times it felt like the show didn't know if it was trying to be a story about Booth or a story about Stanton. Stanton is obviously the true protagonist, the good guy we root for throughout the show and the one who is carrying the torch of Lincoln's ideals. But Anthony Boyle's Booth is such a scene stealer that after he exits the show the final episode feels almost deflated. I could sense that this show was trying to say something bigger about justice and politics and staying true to your ideals, but in my opinion the narrative never really explored any of those themes in a satisfactory way.

And I'm sorry, but I never warmed up to Hamish Linklater's portrayal of Lincoln.

I think this is a fine show if you just want to watch a period drama that has spy and courtroom elements without thinking about it too much, but it's trying to be something deeper and unfortunately not really getting there.

Manhunt Ep. 1 Thoughts

As someone who's studied Civil War era America a lot and has consumed a lot of Civil War content, they've done a great job including small but historically accurate bits that aren't necessary but show that the production did a lot of research and I'm here for it.

Anthony Boyle is incredible as Booth. Seeing him in this role immediately after playing Harry Crosby is true whiplash. This man has range.

It kind of bothers me that they went out of their way to make Booth and other historical figures like Mary and Robert Lincoln look like they actually did but didn't put Tobias Menzies in the Santa Claus beard that irl!Stanton had. I'm guessing this is because Stanton is the protagonist of the show and having him look like that wouldn't be "relatable" for the audience, which is always the bane of period dramas.

The production in general looks really good. I wonder if they were able to film at the actual Ford's Theater (I've been there and it's amazing, it has one of the most memorable museum exhibitions I've ever experienced)

Only thing that sticks out to me that I didn't like from the first episode so far is the portrayal of Lincoln, especially his voice. It's not really the actor's fault, Daniel Day Lewis has already set the ultimate standard for Lincoln portrayals in film and nobody who plays the man now has a chance.

Post-MoTA Thoughts

Now that MoTA is over I'm trying to think of how I feel about it especially in relation to Band of Brothers (I haven't seen The Pacific so I can't make comparisons there). And overall, I really enjoyed the show. Buck and Bucky's relationship was incredible to watch, and I loved seeing Crosby going from vomiting in every plane scene he's in to best navigator of the 100th. I loved seeing Meatball being babied by all the guys at the base. But there was something missing from the show that I could feel but couldn't really put into words until now.

I saw a post here a few weeks ago talking about how while MoTA is fine on the surface, it's missing a strong central theme to truly bring it to the level of BoB and that thought has stuck with me through the last few episodes. I do think MoTA is feels more fragmented that BoB did. Even though there were fewer characters, we never got to know any of the guys beyond Buck, Bucky, Crosby, and Rosie in any depth. The Tuskegee guys feel very tacked onto the show as well, which was a disappointment to me. And yes, I know this is because so many of the men died or were shot down and became POWs.

Band of Brothers was about how the men who survived war together forged an unbreakable and irreplaceable bond with each other. I think if MoTA was going to have a different central theme, it should have been about how the men processed such staggering levels of grief and loss together. They touch on it so early in the season but it doesn't really come back up again, despite Crosby's narration telling us how many of the 100th died over the course of the war. Maybe they couldn't think of a way to depict that theme in an era where men weren't supposed to show weakness through emotion and when therapy was basically nonexistent but I think they could have made it work.
