EDISON X DEATH BY REPETITION

Edison meets Death by Repetition..

Death By Repetition is a blog and music concept thought up by Andrew Rainey which was essentially set up to share new music that he was hearing that no one else was really writing about in the UK and only a select few DJs were playing.

Dean Mclaughlan is also involved as a writer for the blog and both have similar but varied tastes ranging from Techno, Disco, House and Indie!

The Death By Repetition website reaches audiences from all corners of the globe and is particularly popular in France and South America and in the first year of our guest mixes we have reached over 25 thousand plays so far!

Plans for 2015 include bigger names on the guest mix roster, A & R work for labels and guest DJ appearances with a possible night with Edison….

Having known the Edison guys since before high school it’s a pleasure to be asked to do a feature each month in the way of choosing songs and mixes which are currently doing the rounds on mines and Dean’s IPod’s.

Some of the songs come from various DJ’s and producers, some of which have done mixes for our Death by Repetition blog in the past and some are songs from those mixes.

Played this at the Jailyard in September and have heard it out at Bigfoots Tea Party in Glasgow and Warehouse Project in Manchester so it’s fair to say this track is doing the rounds! The vocals seem to be a pitched down cut from 80s house tune “Let me Love you for tonight” by Kariya!

DJ Maxxi (Radio Slave) - Disco Energia Mix

Big fans of Bicep , their blog was one of the main inspirations for setting up the Death By Repetition blog they make great house and are insanely good live ! Apparently this track is just a single take as they lost the file for it ! It’s a total monster of a track that I would love to play in a club someday!

Thought I would include a bit of a “classic” track to finish off my selections, this still sounds as fresh as the first time I heard it !

So onto Dean then..

My selections are very varied as pointed out and highlighted also by Andrews selections. It was a pleasure to be asked to do this for Edison knowing the guys. I’m also extremely pleased that the brand is grabbing attention and taking off, evident by clothing enthusiasts wearing and showing off the styles of their brand on their Facebook and Instagram pages. So with further ado..

My first pick is from Belgian disco lords In Flagranti. These guys have been around for a while and their first album was released back in 2006 and I’ve been a fan ever since. Some tracks are a bit odd but I’d highly recommend checking out their albums, but this ones slower and a little darker with really nice vocals. Isn’t too much on the eardrums and is quite funky with odd sounds thrown in that really appeals to me. This track is a remix by French artist Sebastien Tex, whom I’d recommend checking out if you like some of these tracks and our mixes from the blog homepage.

My second choice was taken from a record label called Klasse Recordings. This is more of a house label but some of the tracks have a great groove and this one for me is the pick of the bunch. This packs a little punch and this has been one of my favourite’s since the release of the EP. I only stumbled across this label due to The Revenge who included this track is his Resident Advisor top ten monthly chart. My third choice is from Tel Aviv based based DJ, producers and all round musicians Red Axes. And I’d say this is a dancefloor bomb. The trumpet and bass from this song gets me everytime. If you have a decent set of speakers, this’ll blow your mind. We have interviewed and had a guest mix from these guys, which was superb, and these guys are a friendly bunch. They play a lot of gigs in Europe and run their own night in Tel Aviv. This song is taken their EP Kicks Out of You, from French label I Am Cliché, ran by the very talented Cosmo Vitelli, who also comes highly recommened. This is slightly different from their own album Ballad of the Ice, which is more band/indie sounding.

Fourth up is a funky little dance floor foot tapper that I came across in a recent mix by Purple Disco Machine’s set from BangOn! This is a little more up-tempo disco and I regularly play this whilst studying to get my brain started. So enjoy, because this really is one of my favs at the moment. This was released from Luv Shack Records. LUV011 is the split EP of the two up and coming electronic music duos “Manhooker” and “Space Echo”. Whilst both projects are still relatively new to the scene, they have equally made a stir with their first releases. Lastly, but not least is a song that I think is simply the song of the year for me, especially from an artist I really admire. This is taken from her Idle Eyes EP, which was released via kill the dj, ran by Ivan Smagghe on 29 September 2014. The EP comes with remixes from Dj’s Roman Flugel, Planningtorock, Mafredas, Benedikt Frey, Clara 3000 & rRoxymore.

C.A.R. is Chloé Raunet and this is a remix of one of her of her songs by Clara 3000. Slow, dark, great vocals, this is simply beautiful and haunting. There’s a lot more I could say about this track but I’ll leave it there. Just wait to that bass kicks in…. Definitely one to look out for in the future..

The Purist.

One of our favourite producers here at Edison, it's been power moves only for the purist. This UK beatsmith has been carving out certified bangers for some of the best in the game on both sides of the pond, including Danny Brown, Action Bronson, Piff Gang and CAS. His own imprint daupe has been releasing quality product on both digital and physical platforms complete with dope artwork. The Purist's TR-ill album and the limited edition 12" vinyl of mcTrees classic mixtape Sunday school 2 are both essential purchases from this labels catalogue. It's evident that the Purist really gives a shit about the music he puts out, definitely one of the artists we definitely check for with every new release. What a week that was, one that saw Maryland rapper Logic living up to his hype, releasing one of the best albums in recent years. While on these shores, Scottish experimental hip hop group Young Fathers won the Mercury Music Prize for best album, Zane Lowe had the balls to remake the Drive soundtrack with different artists, and last but definitely not least, a packed Earls Court watched Rebel Sound win the Red Bull Music Academy Culture Clash in one of the greatest nights in recent history.

Commonwealth Crack.

The commonwealth games have come and gone and today see’s the athletes parade through the streets of Glasgow with there gold, silver, and bronze medals. As well as athletes the competing countries are also producing artists and producers that are at the top of there game producing some of the best shit on the planet right now. So without further ado heres our commonwealth countries top artists putting out that heat.

Barbados - Rihanna

Ri Ri has had hits, like crazy hits, the fucking biggest hits there’s to many to mention. So lets forget the music for a minute. Rihanna has became one of the ultimate fashion icons of our times, perhaps the greatest along with Kanye. If Ri Ri wears your stuff its pretty much the ultimate cosign. After RiRi was spotted wearing ‘Trapstar' they went from a small independent label to selling in Harvey Nicks and Selfridges. She’s now doing collab with ‘Palace' which will no doubt take them to the next level as well. Would appear sex sells. Who knew.

Canada - Drake

I tried.. you have to understand I really did try to pick someone else. Lunice was so close, and hell even Justin Beibers last album had some certified fire on it… yeah I said it. But all roads led to Drizzy. Whilst so called "real hip hop" heads doubt his 'realness’ and continue nodding their heads solemly along to morbid dusty piano loops champagne papi is smashing stadiums whilst coming out with heat time and time again. Don't get it twisted Drake is one of the few artists in hip hop who understands how to craft a proper album.

England - Casisdead

This mask wearing figure is like no other artist around right now, one of the wittiest lyricist's on the planet. His tales of drug dealing, kidnap, murder and just general dark shit is just pure genius and is told with some of the most relatable and hilarious references to british culture. "I'm as English as fruit and fruit and barley or hp sauce on your bacon sarnie" ps watch the video to his song ‘Charlotte’ it's a complete masterpiece, but be warned its very NSFW.

Trinidad and Tobago - Nicki Minaj

Starships and stupid green Joker hairstyle aside, Nicki can flow with the best of them. Need proof?? skip 3.35 minutes into Kanye's classic track ‘Monster' and listen to Nikki body that track and every other verse from that year by firing out about seven different styles of flow. Lets hope this years upcoming 'Pinkprint' album is back to the form she showed on her superb debut ‘Pink Friday'.

Scotland - Hudson Mohawke

Hud Mo is on another planet right now, he's producing the cream of U.S. hip hop, including beats on possibly the top three rap albums last year from Drake, Kanye and Pusha-T. Everything he has put out so far has been next level. In particular the 'TNGHT E.P.' he did with Lunice in 2012. Riot starting music.

Jamaica - Popcaan

He's been around for a bit, but Popcaan finally released his debut L.P. 'Where We Come From' earlier this year and what an album it is, only eclipsed by the incredible debut album 'My Krazy Life' from west coast rapper YG for my favourite album of the year so far. Where We Come From is one of those albums that just sinks more and more into your skin with each listen.

All eyes on Glasgow...and Scotland!

“And that’s a wrap! Our #2014Ceremony has been made in Glasgow, by Glaswegians, for everyone in the Commonwealth!” One thing is for sure, Barrowman and dancing tea cakes aside, Glasgow welcomed the world with open arms in a way no other could and it’s shaping up to be a quite amazing Commonwealth Games. For Scotland in particular, it’s been a record breaking games. Sitting third in the overall medal table it’s now, as we go into the second week, all about keeping up that momentum. At Edison we’ve been engrossed by the Games and seduced by the buzz of the city we had to go, see it and feel it for ourselves over the weekend. As the sun shone, for most of the time anyway, we sat, soaked up the atmosphere and were inspired by the way the City is playing host to so many guests from around the world. Another thing that had us talking was of course the athletes – their dedication, attitude, discipline, hard work and belief is inspiring and, importantly, not exclusive to the sporting world. These traits are transferable to anyone, doing anything, whatever it may be and at Edison we’re taking notes. We are just getting started and for us, just like the Scotland team, it’s all about keeping up the momentum.

We were at T in the Park last week enjoying the festival buzz, albeit  in the rain. With fashion as our thing we kept a keen eye on the latest festival fashion trends and faux pas. 

The music you listen to, the bands you go and see, the debates and discussions you have, those strangers who become friends you meet, the way you dance in the rain or soak up the sun; it’s all part of one big self expression – and the same goes for what you wear. It’s this freedom to be that makes not only T in the Park but all of the other great festivals. And amidst all of this we couldn’t help but think that one day people might choose Edison to aid their self expression, and that it’s that day we strive to see. As the day came to a close we sat people watching for a while and concluded that in truth there really are no fashion faux pas at a festival, there is a sense of freedom to be who you are and even who you really want to be and that’s what everyone in one way or another is doing at a festival and of all the festival trends we think that truly is one worth following.
