âWorking here everyday Iâd imagine itâd get nauseating. Probably cause a few side effects in a  couple years,â Naomi agreed with a laugh. âHonestly, I love coffee but Iâm nearly positive Iâd end up swearing it off after two months if I worked here.â While she wasnât a huge caffeine-addict, Naomi did enjoy her fix in the morning. Whether it was coffee or tea, she had to have something to stimulate her senses regardless of how many hours sheâd slept the night before. The only thing she was wary of was to make sure she never drank enough to cause a crash in the middle of the day. Working as a medical professional, such an event would hardly be in her or her patientâs best interest. âAh, thatâs life,â she told her. âThereâs always that one asshole whoâs determined to bring everyone down. The key is to tell them to fuck offâ by explicit statement or implication.â Naomiâs grin mirrored Pascaleâs. âWell, a discount makes me feel a little better about accepting your offer. Iâll tell you what: you buy the coffee, Iâll buy the pastry.â
âNauseating? You have no idea. When I was at college, this stuff was basically my lifeblood but now I canât stand it. Iâd rather not think about the possible side effects of working here but at least itâs helped me getting a better nightâs sleep.â A complete lie, really. But when she was joking around and taking life not so seriously she almost fooled herself into thinking she was alright. That she wasnât still plagued by guilt and paranoia and was able to take things lightly. No problem that she couldnât just shrug off. Despite knowing that the effects were only temporary, Pascale was addicted to the sensation of making someone else laugh. Someone who was truly sad couldnât do that, right? Therefore she always rationalised she was on her way to healing, no matter how her heart protested. âSomething youâve clearly mastered.â This time her voice was filled with slight awe rather than humour. âIâve yet to master that art but maybe Iâve got some time to learn - though Iâm way past the optimum age for learning new things.â Once again the slightly wistful note that sheâd started her sentence on was buried under her messing around. âI guess thatâs fair, though I wish youâd let me get both. Not gonna argue with you though over it though, seeing as thatâs what you rescued me from.â
