Everyday things you probably already do that can be WITCHY with intention:

🌙 Showering - As every witch knows, it’s important to cleanse your space often! A daily shower is a perfect way to cleanse yourSELF! Ritual baths are amazing, but when life gets busy, we don’t always have time to sit and soak. Use your alone time in the shower intentionally. Clean your body while imagining all of the negative energy of the day washing off of you. Use certain soaps or bath products in conjunction with specific intentions. (Rose for universal love, peppermint for wealth, chamomile for purification, etc.) Remember to be intentional in your thoughts as well. Showers are a great place for meditation and manifestation!

🌙 Applying makeup/doing your hair - These are things we typically do in front of a mirror. A mirror is the perfect gateway to connect with ourselves for a bit of reassurance. Use this time to state positive affirmations or mantras.

🌙 Cleaning your home - Cleaning our sacred spaces is another great way to banish negativity and protect our energy. Use certain scents around your home to match certain intentions, and listen to high frequency music while cleaning to keep your energy lifted.

🌙 Falling asleep - If you’re anything like myself, having noise in the background while you’re getting ready for bed can be very comforting. However, it is extremely important to be intentional about the things we watch or listen to, even subconsciously, before laying down. The alpha and theta brainwave states of consciousness we enter before bed are heavily influenced by our surroundings. Try to watch or listen to TV shows or movies with positive or uplifting messages that are light hearted, or even better yet, try guided meditations!

🌙 Working - This one is so much easier said than done. Sometimes when we are working, our mind tends to wander to things we’d rather be doing instead. Alternatively, if you struggle with happiness or contentment at work, try to avert your thoughts into a positive direction. Think about your dream job. Think about how you’ll achieve your career goals, and how what you are doing now will help you progress forward with these motivations. The universe is always listening. Instead of thinking about how you dislike your job, even if you do, instead think about how much you’d LOVE to do your dream job. This will bring you much closer to your end goal a lot more quickly. Always remember: Positive attitude = positive results!

I just don't agree with Ouija boards "summoning" things. If something is talking to you it's because it's already there. Same with all the new tech that's used to contact spirits nowadays, no one ever says that those devices summon anything.

They're simply tools to communicate with things that are already there.

Tips for Discernment

Discernment is a crucial skill for any magic worker. It’s how we separate the magic from the mundane, reality from our imagination, and reduce the risk of being deluded or manipulated. Everbody already naturally does this a little bit, but actively strengthening the skill can be difficult for a beginner. Here are some tips, tricks, and techniques that have helped me. 

Write everything down. When doing a spell or working with a spirit, keep a written record of what you feel, say, witness, etc. This will help give you something objective to look back on later, which is a huge help for doing any post-research. You never know what details may give you a lead.

Pick a rule for “signs” and stick with it. What do you believe about coincidences? When do you believe something is a message from the Universe or your gods? Create a litmus test/threshhold for what you consider a sign; it doesn’t really matter what it is, so long as it’s consistently applied. That way, you’re saving your energy for the more important stuff instead of worrying/wondering about the small fry. On that note…

The “Rule of Three” (NOT to be confused with the Wiccan Rede.) This is a common discernment method for the concept above. One time seeing something is an instance, two is a coincidence, and three is a message.

When you ask for signs, be specific. Ask for something unique/specific enough that you wouldn’t reasonably expect it to happen anyway, but not so rare that it has no chance of manifesting. Color + Object (ex: let me see a purple feather) is a good method. That way you know exactly what your sign will be. 

The Gut Test. Sometimes when I’m communicating a spirit and I feel like something’s off, I’ll take a moment in my head and think, “this isn’t real. I’m making this conversation up.” Listen to how your gut responds. Does it agree right away? Does saying that feel incorrect, like it’s truly legitimate? Was the conversation legitimate up to a certain point? Listen to your gut and act accordingly. 

The Mimic Test. When working with spirits and “hearing” a voice in your head, try to recreate it with your own inner mind voice. Can you get it to be the same voice? Same volume? If you can, then you’re probably safe writing it off as your imagination.

PRACTICE. Practice. Practice. Practice feeling the energy of your plants. Practice feeling your own energy. Describe it in detail. Practice feeling the energy of any ritual objects. Practice communicating with a spirit you trust, like a guide or Ancestors. Just like a muscle, discernment becomes stronger with repeated use and withers when ignored. Practice on little things to keep you sharp for the big stuff.

Don’t Beat Yourself Up. It’s understandably a little embarrassing to admit we were wrong about something. And that’s okay! Pobody’s Nerfect! Recognizing our discernment mistakes makes us stronger practitioners, because it means you’re critically thinking about what you’re doing and striving to improve. At worst, a practitioner who never admits a lapse in discernment is actually missing that chance for growth, and runs a very high risk of being taken down a flight of fancy and getting increasingly disconnected from the real world. So be kind to yourself! Growing is good.

Ways To Sort Spells: A Couple Categories

This post is part of a series of animistic, spirit-oriented spellcasting for beginners. Go to the masterpost to see them all.

Terms, definitions, and labels are extremely powerful. They create lines and divisions. This can create blinders which prevent us from seeing the whole picture. But it's also dang useful for navigating a murky informational swamp.

I would like to provide you with a few informational labels to help you sort information into boxes for safekeeping. Do not forget, however, to discard these labels in the future once you've outgrown their use.

I find a very good way to categorize spellwork is based on their longevity and how they are expected to operate. The best way to explain this is to jump right in.

First of all, what's a spell?

For the purposes of this series of posts, a spell is a discrete pool of metaphysical power patterned to achieve a distinct goal or outcome. This combination of power and intent is meant to have a literal effect on the physical world and its inhabitants.

One-shot Spells

Like your favorite fanfic intended to be published in one part without any followups, one-shot spells are spells which are cast once, do something specific, and then that's it.

In my way of working, the major thing that makes it one-shot magic is that either:

The spell was never tied to a physical object (in the case of pure energy work or astral magic), or,

The spell was tied to a physical object (like a candle, paper sigil, or incense), but that object will be destroyed in order to release the spell, and,

The spell is intended to do something specific once and then stop.

One way to envision one-shot magic is like assigning a specific quest to a fairy knight. He gallops out of your castle and across the kingdom to achieve what you desire. When he accomplishes the task (manifests your goal), or when he runs out of his fairy bread (the energy of the spell), he disappears - whichever comes first.

Once the knight has left your castle, it's really hard to get him to change his course of action. If you realized you made a mistake sending him out, you're probably going to have to send another knight to stop him.

Also if you tell him his job and then lock him in a room he will DESTROY it trying to get out and do your bidding. This is a little more like 201 stuff but keep that in mind :)

Pros of one-shot spells:

They come in clutch when you need something specific to happen once, but you don't need it to continue happening on a regular basis. Examples include finding a job, getting Becky fired, getting a lease for an apartment you can afford, or finding the perfect pet for your lifestyle.

They are set-and-forget. Once the initial casting is complete, you do not need to go back to recharge or monitor the spell.

You can pre-cast spells and store them inside of physical vessels (again, that's the candles, incense, paper sigil, etc etc) and wait to release the magic until you're ready.

Cons of one-shot spells:

The initial spellcasting is meant to provide them with enough power to fully complete your goal. This means they can be more draining to cast, especially if you let your personal power charge them (a fix to this, however: pre-cast the spell and continuously charge the disposable vessel over time to slowly boost it).

Because the spell is not tied to any physical vessel once the casting is complete, it can be a little more difficult for beginners or those without strong psychic senses to track, monitor, or modify their spells if they choose to.

It's an ineffective way of approaching magic in your life that needs to be both ongoing and easy to manage.

Continuous Magic

As opposed to one-shot spells, continuous magic is magic which I define as being both:

Bound to a physical vessel (such as a piece of jewelry or a container), and,

Intended to provides the same effect continuously through an extended period of time.

One way to conceptualize continuous magic is like a personal assistant that stands around you at all times. The assistant constantly works to bring you the things you've asked for, or keep away things you don't like. The assistant is also open to input and suggestions, as long as they don't stray too far out of his job description.

However, your assistant will only work if they get their monthly paycheck (that's the recharging!).

Because this assistant is always around, you can put him on unpaid leave at any time or restart his employment. You don't have to send a knight to convince the assistant not to come to work that day, you can just tell the assistant that for the time being his services are no longer necessary.

Pros of continuous magic:

They are ideal when you need a magical effect to constantly work without a set end date. Examples include most protections and general prosperity spells.

Once set up, they are easy to deal with and manage. Recharging is much easier and faster than the initial casting, and often needs to only be done monthly (or less!).

If you need to pause or dismantle the effects of the spell, doing so is relatively easy, and the spell can be started up again later.

Monitoring and modifying the spell is usually a breeze.

Cons of continuous magic:

The magic radiates out of the vessel, so where the vessel is actually matters a lot. Unless you have a taglock that forwards the magic to a different person or address, it's effects will spill out around it.

Searching for, or creating, a suitable vessel is typically more of a hassle and can be more expensive than one-shot magic.

You gotta have a place to store these bad boys. Vessels can be chosen to be very small and discreet, but their density and mass is an inherent and unavoidable factor.

Sometimes you make a continuous magic vessel and forget about it, and 3 months later you're like "why is this HAPPENING" and then 18 months later you find the jar in the back of your closet and you and your brain do this GIF with yourselves:

And boom, yeah, that's it. Two categories of practical magic.

Now I know what you're asking. Are there more categories?

Twist: There's not even these categories. Remember, we must not consider these two categories to be absolute. You cannot find one-shotness or continousness in the DNA of magic.

As varied and infinite as techniques, beliefs, and intents are, there are that many categories of magic.

An astute reader may already be asking, "what about spells meant to do one thing and stop, but you don't destroy the vessel they're in? What about energy work meant to last long-term but it's never tied to anything?"

Valid questions indeed, and worthy of much consideration.

Our purposes here are to not to try and wrangle all of magic into convenient boxes; that is too grand a task for any one blog series.

Even wrangling one little field plot of magic is serious work in and of itself. Our purpose here is instead to provide foundational guidelines and suggestions for those who want to understand practical magic and get to casting it just as soon as possible.

And not even all methodologies of practical magic, either -- just the ones I'm familiar enough with to share.

What is a "Familiar"

First thing I will say, that many might not like: Familiars in folklore are spirit beings. Not just any spirits, but ones that a witch has made a pact with for various other tasks usually in exchange for offerings, lending of power, a foothold to the physical world, and sometimes protection as well.

They were also in folklore inherited from other witches, given/assigned to a witch by a more powerful spirit being (most often Fae Royalty, Divine Beings including God, or the 'Devil'), or show up on their own offering assistance in times of need. However, they still perform the tasks and expect reciprocity.

Familiars can and do in folklore, leave. They are not permanently bound to the witch and so will leave if their the relationship is no longer beneficial. A witch could also have more than one Familiar in their lifetime or at a time.

Embodiment

Familiars did not always look like animals, they also could be plants or humanoid. Some are said to be capable of shapeshifting or possessing living creatures with the help of their witch. Interestingly, in my research, I found more accounts of humanoid Familiars that could shapeshift or had some beastial traits (they also ranged in size) in early folklore than I did actual animal Familiars.

Also, in the literature, I encountered they were about 8/10 times referred to as ‘Familiar spirits’ instead of just Familiar. They are also often described as imps, fairies, or demons. However, they seem to be closer or more often related to Fae lore. * Which when you take away the Celtic cultural context from the classification of ‘Fae’ it is basically distinction-less meaning any liminal being not human or divine. *

History

“In the early 1970s, Jeffrey Russell noted that 'The small demons that became the witches' familiars of the later Middle Ages were originally dwarves, trolls, fairies, elves, kobolds, or the fertility spirits called Green men, any of whom could be either frightening or funny' and Keith Thomas claimed that the cunning man's fairy helper belongs 'to the same genre as the witch's familiar or the conjurer's demons?'

In 1971 Keith Thomas lamented that the English animal familiar was 'largely unaccounted for'.Despite such references to formality and fear, a large number of relationships between magical practitioner and familiar spirit were informal and intimate” (Wilby).

Common tasks they performed?

Tasks included but were not limited to spying, shapeshifting, attacking or protecting others, give knowledge, warn and aid in times of danger, help a witch develop abilities, and travel between worlds.

What did they get in return?

The most common offerings mentioned in folklore was blood, energy, and a stable foothold in our realm. However, modernly people offer what one would standardly offer a spirit. Things like milk, honey, incense, food items, and items work just fine.

What is a "Magickal Pet"?

A Magickal Pet is a physical animal that lives with a witch, that said witch uses for magickal purposes, involves in ritual work, and/or feels spiritually connected to.

This connection really isn't uncommon in pet owners in general and you could involve any animal in magick, so what really makes a Magickal Pet? Well, it is the belief that the pet is interested in the witches craft. Most modern witches cite things like seeming interest in their altar or actions during ritual work, as well as divination forms like interrupting tarot sessions.

Getting A Magickal Pet

You can get a Magickal Pets the same way you get any pet. You don’t need to have these animals from a young age to have a deep connection with them.

JUST A NOTE ON CONSENT

There is a bit of an ethical dilemma when it comes to using your pets in your craft. This is that using your pets energy, fur, etc. and involving them in rituals can open them up to the same dangers you face during all spell work.

This like overextending their energy, spell blow-back, and connecting them to the work can and do occur. There isn’t really a way that they can expressly consent so if you are going to involve them then PLEASE ward your fur, scale, or feather babies.

Calling a Familiar Ritual

Step 1: Introspection & Planning

This is when you ask yourself why you want a Familiar? Are you ready for one? What kind of Familiar do you think you can handle? As well as think up what your basic terms and negotiate terms are. This introspection period is often paired with meditation.

Plan your ritual. Time, place, tools, etc.? Take into account the weather of the day and be sure not to trespass. Maybe you want to make new portable wards or make/acquire a vessel, anchor, or conduit for the spirit (some spirits refuse to be bound to them and they are not mandatory).

Step 2: Wards, Circles, & Area Setup

Ward yourself and, if you use them, cast your circle. I recommend warding both your self and the space. Here is a pretty good wiki if anyone needs ideas or is confused: Wards

Step 3: Offerings

Lay out your offerings. Offerings can include food items, incense, burning herbs, etc. But if you are going to be doing this outside then I recommend non-toxic and biodegradable materials. Milk and honey are always an easy and safe bet.

Step 4: Incantation

Call to potential spirits. You can use the one below or make your own.

”Spirits of the forest, I pronounce my intentions to thee.

Come forth and seek me, and equal we will be.

Not master and servant, but familiar to familiar, to share our knowledge, our spirit, and our traits.”

Step 5: Meditation/Trance

Meditate and wait for a spirit to answer your call. This may take a bit and they may not show until you enter the astral plane, are sleeping, or at all. Just like in the show, spirits might not come to you right away and that's okay. However, if they don't come within about 3 days then you might want to try again.

Step 6: Negotiation

If/When a spirit shows you then negotiate your terms. Tell them what you want and expect of a Familiar and allow them to say their terms. Get a feel of the spirit and judge whether they are the right choice. Be flexible, but also know the terms you will not move on. Many spirits will take a mile when you give them an inch.

YOU CAN SAY NO AND VICE VERSA

The first spirit might not be your best choice and that’s okay, be careful not to bite off more than you can chew. For example, if you are a witchling or new to spirit work then you should probably respectfully decline powerful spirits like Aos si or mid-level demons (I don’t know how to express that better, sorry demonologists and workers).

Be realistic about what you can handle and try to avoid power/experience imbalances. * I personally have turned away spirits that I felt I was not ready for and there is no shame in it. * Don’t become disrespectful if a spirit decides to say no. They are sentient and often sapient beings that have the right to refuse.

Step 7: Vessel/Anchor/Conduit

Part of your negotiation may have included a vessel or anchor for them (you may make one and they refuse) and this would be the time for you to bind them to it.

Conduits are physical objects used to channel a spirit beings energy and a spirit may prefer that over an anchor/vessel. For example Sigils, the spirit might give you -or you can ask for- a sigil to represent them in ritual and for easy communication. Possibly bring a notebook and pen, just in case.

Step 8: Closing & Cleansing

End your communication with the spirit, close your circle (if you use them), and cleanse yourself to avoid having parasitic or negative spirits attach to you. Gather your stuff as needed.

Conclusion

Many modern witches equate these two things but unfortunately, a Magickal Pet simply isn’t capable of many of the things a Familiar is. They can’t consent and they rely on you for spiritual and magickal protection.

If it wasn’t for the tasks and capabilities then I would be completely fine with people applying the label to their pets. I have no problem with people involving pets in their craft and I think it is great that so many people feel so connected to their pets as it tells me they are well loved, and that’s always great to see.

Before you start make sure you have all that you need for the ritual by laying out your crystals, fill up the chalice/bowl with drinking water, place your candles and put out your food on a separate table. Then sage the area to make your sacred space and cast your circle. Invoke the elements, then God and Mary. Once you are done with the invocations turn to your altar and hold your arms open wide looking up to the Moon and chant:

Oh, Mother Mary bless (me or us) with this Wolf Moon,

I ask that you guide (me or us) with heightened awareness, fill (me or us) with Determination and focus (my or our) energy for this New Year.

Take this time to reflect upon the goals that you want to achieve this month. Once done, raise up your chalice/bowl and chant:

The moon is the symbol of our holy mother, her purity and wisdom are great and all-knowing, and (I or we) honor her on this holy night.

Until the time when the moon becomes full again, please keep a watchful eye over (me or us) Oh blessed mother. In God and your name, we pray. Amen

Take a drink from the chalice/bowl now that’s has turned into moon water and share if you have others participating in the ritual.

Thank God and Mary, then release the elements, and you are done! Keep your crystals out for this moon and make sure you remember to take them in the next day.

Have fun after the ritual, you can either have a party or just celebrate by yourself; it’s up to you.

Where do magic correspondences come from?

This was an interesting topic that somebody asked me about before. I'm happy the person asked because I feel like people don't ask questions like this enough. Many beginners make that mistake often. When you are beginning your craft or in the early stages of researching for your craft, always ask questions.

Anybody who has been on my profile for a longer period of time knows I am not a believer in the whole "rosemary can replace any herb" thing or the "white can replace any color" thing. It sounds very misleading to me, but that's just my take on the topic. There are many variables that go into correspondences of different things, but these will be some of the things I try to look to when determining correspondences. I hope the following helps you understand this better.

Psychology: I typically look to psychology for things like color correspondences. While we will all individually have our own personal opinions on things based on our own experiences, it is proven that colors tend to have a similar effect on most people. If you'd like to take a look at my post on color correspondences, here is a link.

Medicinal Uses: This one is usually more for things such as plant correspondences. You can see why certain plants are associated with certain things based on their medicinal uses. Rosemary, for example, is associated with memory and dreams in magic. For medicinal uses, rosemary can have positive effects on one's memory and neurological functions.

Folklore: Folklore tends to be region specific. You can live in the same country as another person, but if you live in completely different areas of that country the folklore for your regions may be a little different. Folklore can tell us of many superstitions that let us know what something means. Try reading up on the folklore for the region you're from. You may be surprised by some of the tales you find.

Culture: I'm separating folklore and culture because while folklore can be tied into the culture of a place, folklore tends to be more specific to specific locations. Different countries will have different cultures, which means they will have different perspectives than what you may have. If you do research on the culture of a country different from yours, you may find that the people of that country have different traditions.

Religion: Religion can be tied into culture, too, if the area is overall dominated by one religion. Religious texts and stories can often be found talking about using various things for specific uses (such as magic and honoring deities). Because of this, a person might have a specific association with something because of their religion.

These are just the five things I consider when determining correspondences of things. There are a few things that I have personal association with, though, so I'm not saying you should be limited by these five things. I do think that taking them into consideration is important though.

Tips for my closeted witches <3

-Pick up gardening or cooking so you have an excuse to buy/grow herbs/plants

-Do your big spells at night, so no one will intrude & the power of the moon will be the highest than too

-For making moon water just stick a glass of water on your window sill for a couple hours, it doesn’t need to be overnight

-Use symbolism & substitution, such as symbols that represent any deities your work with (if you work with them) this way you can represent them subtly

-Wear a black shirt for protection (use color magic for clothes or make up)

-Make paper book covers to cover your witchcraft books, put them behind other books, or place them with your school work

-Take advantage of windy days and use wind to cleanse

-Practice candle magick

-Research energy work

-Practice ring magick

-Work with essential oils

-Use pdf books and change the name of the file

-Start a crystal collection because they’re pretty

-Start a candle collection because they smell nice

-When making sigils, write them in moon water or in invisible ink so your parents won’t see them

-Store pressed dried herbs in books

-If you play an instrument you can turn spells into songs or melodies

-Use regular cards instead of a tarot deck for cartomancy (in the link down below is our discord server where you will be able to find how to use and play cartomancy), you can also make your own tarot!

-Use showers to cleanse yourself with water and visualization

-Create a cleansing spray and disguise it as an air freshener

-Make a travel alter in an altoids can or make an altar on a board/baking tray and store it under your bed

-Turn your room into an altar, a plant could represent earth in the north corner, a fan or incense burner in the east for air, a dragons statue south for fire and a fountain for water in the west (you can choose what represents each element, this is an example)

-You can also make your altar in a shoebox

-make a digital altar (a dedicated tumblr blog, pinterest board, moodboard, a crafted temple in a building game, etc)

-dedicate meals to them before you eat it, art, music, writing, etc

-Say your grimoire/bos is a book of story ideas or info for a game of dnd

-make digital grimoires/bos in notion or google drive

-Art magick!!

-Sigils as fancy doodles or a language for a fantasy setting

-Trace sigils in your food, in the shower, while applying skin care, in your notebooks, digitally on pictures in your phone, draw a sigil on your nails before painting them with nail polish

-Drinking tea and you’re bad at drawing sigils at the bottom with honey? Don’t like the taste of honey but want to incorporate sigils on your tea) use washable markers on your mugs, you can also use color intent

-enchant your jewelry, masks, clothes, etc

-Pass your pendulum as jewelry

-Make your own incense with kitchen spices/herbs

-If you need to get rid of the smell of incense or perfume or burnt herbs, you can make a solution of 50% water and 50% white vinegar in a spray bottle, also keeping a wet wipe or mini towel next to you can absorb some of the odor

-Hide stuff in plain sight and say they’re decorations (crystals, shells, feathers, etc)

-Spend time on nature so you can connect to the Earth

-If you want to have chalices, you can try to find a cup that you can pass off as drinking cup you keep in your room, if this isn’t possible, than even something as small as a thimble can work

-containers you can use, little pots of lip balm when it runs out, container ||sharpeners||, the containers of camera fills, use old makeup containers, sweet containers, lead containers (pencils, compasses, etc.), medicine containers, etc

-take advantage of being home alone!!!!

Hi! I just wanted to let you know that your blog has made me feel so much better about worshipping the gods! I’m a baby witch and knew about deity work and was interested but was quite spooked because I’ve been burned by the church. And suddenly I started seeing several signs and dreams of Apollo, which I ignored because I couldn’t tell if they purely coincidence or not. Why would would the gods want to work with someone like me? Imagine my surprise when Apollo shows up in a dream with Ares who asks me point blank ‘what are you so afraid of with us?’. Helping others not feel nervous about working with the gods is the main reason why I made my Tumblr account.

There is a lot at play when it comes to being nervous about the gods that have nothing to do with them and everything to do with your upbringing. Please keep these points in mind while you're working with the gods:

1. Christianity's history and influence on the modern world

2. Human Psychology and how it influences the Shadow-Self which in turn manipulates your perception of the gods.

1. Christianity's history and influence on the modern world:

Historically speaking, Christianity has been shaped over the course of thousands of years and while it was taking shape, it made laws and regulations along the way that demonized anything that was not Christian.

The Christianization of Europe gave way to the Witch Trials which solidified the way modern viewers see the concept of good vs evil. This is the main reason why anyone who does not properly deconstruct from Christianity will react negatively to non-Christian ideas and ideals due to the demonization of those beliefs that took place in history: (LINK) (LINK) (LINK)

Because of its extensive influence and the wars it has fought for domination, Christianity has shaped the modern world. We have laws and regulations that mimic laws and regulations in the Bible. The Western School System was shaped by medieval monasteries and that's just the icing on the cake of how much influence Christianity has had in the modern world: (LINK)

Even while not growing up in a Christian household, Christian indoctrination often starts at a young age with children consuming western media which is influenced by Christian concepts that shape our moral compass.

A perfect example of these concepts can be found in movies and shows where the idea of Good vs. Evil is inspired by the biblical fight between God and Satan.

Many kids shows and movies like The Power Puff Girls, Cow and Chicken, and Disney's Fantasia are a lot less subtle about the Christian influence and even have Satan-like characters to drive a harder point of who the bad guys are like HIM, The Red Guy, and Chernabog to name a few: (LINK)

[[Note: Disney's Chernabog is originally a Slavic god: (LINK) But I added him to the list as an example of characters who are often referred to as Satan by people who are unaware of his Slavic roots. For example, the BuzzFeed article I linked that addresses him in this way.]]

Growing up in a world shaped by Christian laws, institutions and media influenced by Christian morals and ideals is the main reason why you have been conditioned to react positively to Christian ideas and ideals regardless of your religion but especially when you are raised Christian and wish to switch to an older religion especially one that contradicts Christian ideals.

Deconstructing Christian ideas and values will help you connect better with the gods because your psychology has been shaped to see them in a negative light.

2. Human Psychology, and the shadow self:

Your psychology has been primed to see the gods as bad, scary, wrathful, and take their myths literally because of how modern christianization has portrayed the gods.

Growing up in this environment makes it hard to interact with the gods because your psychology influences your perception which is shaped by your moral development which is greatly impacted when you're a child: (LINK)

As children, we learn the difference between good and bad with all the subtext and social cues as to what's acceptable vs what is not.

For example: Purity culture tells us sex is bad because Mary was able to have a baby and remain a virgin without having to have sex AKA without having to commit "Original Sin."

On the flip side, Greek mythology is packed to the brim with mentions of sex between the gods, humans and naked statues because they come from a culture that didn't demonize sex.

Psychology is also important because it affects how you see the world and how your moral compass interacts with it.

This also affects how you interact with your shadow self.

There are a lot of posts on my blog about how the Shadow self affects your relationship with the gods so I'd like to leave you with this post on setting boundaries with the gods since you're just beginning. Boundaries are always important with understanding yourself and the gods: (LINK)

Cleansing for Beginners•

•Release negativity • Purify • Neutralize energy•

Common items that require cleansing: Tarot Cards, Pendulums, Crystals & Stones, Spaces, Altars.

Before using any cleansing method, be sure to check if it’s safe. Some crystals or objects are sensitive to water, heat and light. Always burn responsibly.

Importance of Intent

Use affirmations to make your intent clear. Be sure to clear your mind and relax, you can clearly think of your intent and let it embody you. You can also speak the intent out loud or repeatedly think of it in your mind. Be sure to focus your intent on what needs cleansing. Also remember to keep your affirmations in the present tense.

Examples of affirmations

“This space is cleansed of all negative energies and influences.”

“The moonlight cleanses these stones.”

“These cards are purified.”

Using the Elements for Cleansing

• Water: submerge, sprinkle, rinse.

Fully submerge some items in a cup of water.

Sprinkle water over a space or object.

Rinse what you wish to cleanse.

• Air: incense, wind, smoke, oil diffusers.

Burning incense & diffusing essential oils can cleanse spaces and objects. Hold objects in the incense smoke for best results. Common scents for cleansing include lavender, peppermint, lemon, sage and rosemary scents.

Wind can cleanse items using weather conditions or fans. Hold items in the wind or allow wind to blow through a space.

Smoke of any kind can be used to cleanse but the easiest route is using incense smoke.

• Fire: flame, candle, heat, burn.

You can use candles in different ways. Hold an object over a candle and the heat and smoke will work together to cleanse. You can also use scented candles to cleanse areas. White candles are associated with purity.

Heat can be used with candles, flames or any other method. Hot springs are considered to have cleansing properties.

Burning or holding an item in a flame is considered to be cleansing as well.

• Earth: plants, dirt, mud, salt.

Different plants and herbs can be used for cleansing. Before using plants and herbs, be aware of any medical conditions, pregnancy, pets or children and be sure the plants you are using are safe. Common plants and herbs for cleansing include sage, rosemary, juniper, white pine and thyme.

Fully submerge objects in dirt or sprinkle with dirt to encourage cleansing.

Cover objects in the mud. You can place a dish with mud in a room and ask the earth to cleanse the area.

Burying an item is known to cleanse it.

Salt can be used in many different ways for cleansing. Most commonly it is sprinkled.

Crystals and Stones for Cleansing

Certain crystals have cleansing and purifying properties. This list is only a few.

Be sure to cleanse these crystals often. They may crack or break from absorbing too much energy. The exception would be self-cleansing stones.

Selenite

The best stone for beginners, it is very sensitive to water. This stone is self-cleansing and also cleanses the air and other objects around it. Keep it stored with other crystals, tarot cards, on an altar or on your person.

Clear Quartz

Clear Quartz is very versatile in its uses. One of its properties is cleansing but it also requires to be cleansed itself. It can be placed in a room, on your person or on an object to cleanse.

Citrine

Citrine can be used to cleanse other objects, it also requires to be cleansed itself. Can be stored with other crystals, tarot cards and objects to keep them cleansed.

Carnelian

Carnelian has cleansing properties. It can be used to cleanse others and yourself as well as other objects.

Using Light for Cleansing

•Moonlight

Leave items in indirect or direct moonlight for cleansing. You can also allow moonlight to shine directly into a specific space.

•Sunlight

Alternatively, you can also leave items in indirect or direct sunlight or allow sunlight to enter a specific space. Be careful leaving certain crystals or stones in sunlight.

Best Times and Moon Cycles for Cleansing

Days of the week

Saturday’s & Sunday’s are the best days for cleansing. Saturday’s are ruled by the elements and are a day of relaxing and letting down. The best day for cleansing and protection. Sundays are the day to get ready for the week, prepare and cleanse spaces and items.

Days of the year

•Spring Equinox

A great time for manifestation and cleansing. Balance is heightened and there is a sense of renewal.

•May Day

A great day to cleanse, especially with fire. Purification is a theme of the day.

•Autumnal Equinox

A day all about releasing and starting new. Cleansing energies are high as a cycle is coming to an end.

Moon Phases

• New Moon

Associated with new beginnings and release. This is a great time for Cleansing, Manifestation and Planning.

•Full Moon

Associated with reset and letting go. This is a great time for Cleansing. Energies are very high and the moonlight can easily illuminate spaces and objects at this time.

Best Full Moons for Cleansing: December, October, March, April.

TL;DR: Use affirmations to affirm your intent while cleansing. Elements, sunlight, moonlight and certain stones/plants can be used to cleanse objects, spaces or people. Most effective on Saturdays, Sundays or during the new moon/full moon.

Anatomy of a Circle-Casting

In many traditions, circles are used to delineate magical space, and provide a closed, but somewhat portable, working environment for the magical practitioner. Circles are "cast" through ritualistic action, by which a physical space is created, to suit the circle-casters' needs. These circles have multiple uses: To keep lesser curious spirits from coming in and mucking about the proceedings, to create a sense of practical ritual space where the circle is elevated from the mundane plane, to protect the magic-worker when they are at their most vulnerable, and, of course, to provide the appropriate ritual environment for certain workings or spells.

Circles can be as elaborate or as simple as you like, and are often adjusted to accomodate different levels of workings.

Most formal circles in most Western traditions, however, follow a similar rubric:

1. Setup and Cleansing.

The space is typically cleansed (but not yet consecrated), often with a besom or other sweeping tool, both literally and metaphysically. This is to prepare the space for the circle so you have a clean slate with which to start. Many practitioners find it of import to cleanse themselves before rituals, as well, either literally with a bath, or via smoke cleansing. For newcomers: Your altar goes inside the circle, often in the center unless instructed otherwise, and often facing a specific cardinal direction depending on your intentions or traditions.

2. Signal to Begin.

A bell is rung, or other statement proclaimed, to indicate the circle-casting is now begun.

3. Calling of the Spirits (including Calling the Quarters).

The beings, or spirits, with which you'll be working, are called upon to assist with the circle-casting. Some traditions require the beings to be invoked much later in the process.

"Calling the Quarters" here means calling (aka asking to arrive, or petitioning the help of by inviting them to the circle) the four elemental directions - North/Earth, East/Air, South/Fire, and West/Water. These elements are typically called clockwise.

Each tradition will, of course, have a set of different rules and regulations on how and who to call.

4. Drawing the Delineation.

Here, the actual circle-drawing begins. One uses a wand, or lights candles, or casts with their finger, or with their athame, etc, a literal circular boundary shape, frequently cast clockwise, to delineate the boundary of the circle. This is the physical boundary of the circle: One the circle is drawn, a wall is put up, and a door must be cut to invite other practitioners or spirits in. You can draw the circle quite literally, e.g. with a stick in sand, or visualize it using a wand; there's a ton of ways to go about it.

5. Consecration.

At this time, the circle is "blessed", or consecrated, to the practitioner's use. This essentially means dedicating or blessing the space to your deities, spirits, powers, purposes, or higher-ups (for the non-theist witches in the mix, this means blessing the space for work or giving it the old champagne-bottle-on-a-ship). This can be done, for instance, by sprinkling salt water to consecrate (NEVER outdoors; salt will kill your plants!), then follow-up with walking clockwise around the circle with incense to welcome the spirits. Again, each tradition and circle-per-purpose will vary on the actual consecration actions and what, exactly, you are consecrating to.

6. Signal to Begin the Work.

The bell is rung, or signal given, to begin the actual workings within the circle - whether it's a Full Moon Esbat or ritual, a spell, meditiation, or anything else. Offerings can be given at this juncture to spirits that have been called.

7. Thanks for the Work.

Once the work is complete, another signal can be rung; offerings and thanks can be given to the beings of the circle at this time. Meditation and writing in one's notebook or Book of Shadows is also appropriate.

8. Cakes and Wine.

Typically an entirely Wiccan tradition, this is where cakes and wine (literally - a food offering and a beverage offering) are shared with the deities/powers, and also eaten by practitioners. More practically, for non-Wiccans, this is the offering-and-feasting portion of the circle. ("Cakes and Wine" as a phrase originates within Wicca, so please replace with your verbiage of choice as applicable here).

9. Closing the Circle.

We close out the circle by politely dismissing the spirits, politely farewelling the Quarters, farewelling anything we've called, saying goodbye to the Powers, and, finally, physically closing our circle by un-drawing, counterclockwise (or, if you drew the circle counterclockwise, reverse to clockwise). If you used a wand to delineate, draw your circle back up into/through it. (Visualization can be very helpful here to new practitioners.)

10. Benediction.

The circle is cast, and closed - this is where you say Thank You and, if you like, thank and send well-wishes to the other actual, physical participants in the ritual. If you're going it solo, a neat little Thank-You, My Work Here Is Done wrap up speech is particularly nice here.

And there you have it - you'll find lots of traditions have circle castings that use some, or all, of these segments in order; hopefully you'll find this breakdown useful when piloting your own circles, as well!
