About those light trails.
I wrote about the light trails in Akira back in my post about Photographic Syntax but I couldn’t find a good real-life example at the time. I finally spotted this example from the 1980s of a rally car at night, showing the fading light trail that was an effect created by early video cameras.
And here it is in exaggerated, stylized form in Akira:
The interesting thing about this is that this effect dates Akira to the 1980s. Animators obviously were aware of this video effect and copied it in the animation. But it’s an effect that we no longer see in video (thanks to the adoption of CCD and other modern sensors), which must make the light trails seem even more fantastic to modern viewers who are unaware of their “real life” existence on contemporary video. Just one more detail that adds to the visual brilliance of Akira.
