Does history die or does it scream?

It's commonly thought that the waves made in history die down eventually; events 100 years ago matter less to the order of today than events 100 seconds ago.

But upon further inspection, that may not necessarily be the case. Perhaps the ripples of history collapse each other without losing their original intensity... or even rising in strength. Perhaps Gilgamesh's search for immortality ultimately inspired more action on the anti-aging front than Ray Kurzweil's. Further spitballin' needed.

The shiny rock

The people began to believe that to ward off thieves, they should go to sleep at night with a shiny rock in their pocket. It would multiply the thief's punishment tenfold.

Naturally this didn't work, but one day a particularly slow and superstitious thief lifted up the quilt to check for the shiny rock. He instead saw a naked wife and a partly clothed, very angry husband - who beat him to death with the shiny rock he happened to have on his night stand.

Rumor quickly spread of the shiny rock's power. Soon thieves everywhere were terrified. You just couldn't tell who had a shiny rock in their pocket, and soon everyone did have a shiny rock in their pocket, so you couldn't tell who didn't. It didn't make sense. But nobody wanted to risk it, just in case.

As for the husband, that wasn't his wife, and he beat the thief to death so that no one would find out he was an adulterer. So it goes.

About time I got to posting

Hi, I'm Patchwork Sofa. This blog is for #WeirdTheories - things that this anonymous blogger finds interesting, regardless of context.

Here's one: The vast majority of the current Internet is not backed up in a way that will preserve it for future generations. Which means that the last 20 or 30 years of its influence on culture will likely be misconstrued by future cyber-historians, because they won't have the data they need to do a proper analysis of it...

... if you take this to the extreme, what would you think of a culture like ours if the Internet wasn't even known to exist? If it kept getting mentioned in manuscripts, but no trace of it could be found? We would appear to be an age of sudden telepathy, I think. Future historians would be baffled as to how Dawkins-flavored memes and memeplexes suddenly started to spread so much quicker.

What would they point to next for this? If current opinions are stable, there's a good chance they'd point towards colleges as the digital Eurocity responsible for the memetic black plague's high infection count.

I'm just spitballin' here. Let me know what you think. I'm also very drunk.
