The #Panjshir Valley, three hours north of #Kabul, #Afghanistan. One of the only regions in the entire #country to have held off the various assaults on it’s #autonomy since the #Soviet #invasion of #1979. The #Panjshiris are famous for determined defense of their pristine #valley, the virtually impenetrable #mountains either side and for Ahmad Shah #Massoud who led the Panjshiri resistance against the Soviets, against #Pakistani proxies in the civil war, the #Taliban and Al #Qaeda - who would ultimately assassinate him the day before the twin towers were felled in New York City in 2001. HALFETI, TURKEY: Children play in a flooded mosque in the city of Halfeti, on the Euphrates river. The city was partially submerged by the Birecik Dam in 1999 and the majority of its inhabitants were relocated in a new city next to Halfeti. The Birecik Dam is part of the 22 dams of the GAP project (Guneydoglu Anadolu Projesi), a regional development plan launched at the beginning of the 80s by the Turkish government that aims to enhance social stability and economic growth in the Southeastern Anatolia, the poorest region in Turkey.
