22 Nov - 20 Dec Preview Fri 21 Nov 6 pm - 8pm South Block, 60 Osborne Street, Glasgow IN PROGRESS is Kate V Robertson’s first solo exhibition at Patricia Fleming Projects. The title ‘In Progress’ makes reference to technological advancement and creative development - as well as to the evolution of living things in general. The exhibition presents sculpture and drawing to question the notion that something - an artwork specifically – can ever be finished or complete - as the creative process is continuously evolving and merely punctuated by exhibitions. For every new invention, such as 3D printing, there are many failed attempts. Great ideas and technological advancements can help us communicate better and promise to make life easier but Technology itself doesn't make ideas good, just as being able to communicate easily and constantly doesn’t always help us connect or understand each other. "My work focuses on the changing states of materials and the conceptual space between promise, potential and disappointment. I am excited when one material can be transformed to look like another, or is far removed from its original purpose. Like cement being cast to look like wax. In this way it can be related to natural processes that I find miraculous - like volcanoes and glaciers – where all things are ‘in progress’ but at different speeds."   In a year that has seen Glasgow’s public spaces co-opted for mass sporting events, public participation, political demonstration and charity like no other, Kate V Robertson engages the post-Commonwealth Games, post-referendum city in conversation with itself.

converse consists of conversation-based audio works, stories, recorded sounds and music created by Glasgow based musicians and writers including Martin O’Connor, Daniel Padden, Kim Moore, Kirstin Innes and visual artists Virginia Hutchison & Sarah Forrest.

These conversations, along with audio recordings taken from Commonwealth Games events and public responses to those events, will be broadcast from linked portable speakers, hung over telephone wires at or near public sites associated with the Games, mimicking the urban practice of throwing used sports shoes over wires in the street. Kate V Robertson invites you to stop and listen to the unusual speakers, be transported back to the summer, consider the city, and your surroundings.

NOTES FOR EDITORS

1. Kate V Robertson was born in Edinburgh in 1980. She graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 2003 and from their MFA course in 2009 (her degree show piece, Expire, famously brought smoke back to Tramway’s disused chimney). Kate has exhibited widely in Berlin and New York (including Billboard, a piece on Times Square), and received a number of commissions for festivals including the Melbourne Commonwealth Games, Edinburgh Art Festival and Glasgow International. Kate was shortlisted for the Cultural Olympiad’s Artists Taking the Lead project in 2009. Group exhibitions include Paper at MAMAC, Nice, Running Time in the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and Industrial Aesthetics: Environmental Influences on recent art from Scotland at Hunter College, New York. Kate co-curated the Wasps exhibition for this years’ GI at the Briggait, called Reclaimed the Second Life of Sculpture. Kate V Robertson is a studio holder and board member of Glasgow Sculpture Studios.

2. The Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme is a national celebration. Culture 2014 will showcase dance, theatre, music, visual arts, comedy and much more in the run up to and after the Commonwealth Games, with Festival 2014 transforming the Host City at Games time. 

3. The Cultural Programme is a partnership between the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee, Glasgow Life and Creative Scotland.

'Glasgow Slow Down' a public artwork by Jacqueline Donachie

A VELOCITY commission, part of the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme.

Glasgow Slow Down is a temporary public artwork and performance, made by artist Jacqueline Donachie in collaboration with 100 cyclists. The performance event on Sunday 13th April 2014 will result in a city-wide ribbon of colour, made by the cyclists as they travel slowly through Glasgow, coming together in George Square.

The drawing will be made on the road using a small device attached to each bike that leaves behind a single fine line of coloured chalk. To make the chalk lines, cyclists must ride very slowly, thus having a chance to meander through their city at a different pace, going through areas both well known and newly discovered.

Riders will be embarking in groups of 25 from designated muster points in the North, South, East and West of the city at 9 AM, riding on public roads and cycle paths into the centre.  Watch, wave, cheer and support them as they set off, and follow the lines across at any point along the routes. Get your camera out and snap some street art before the rain comes! You can be there to greet all 100 riders as they converge at George Square from 10AM before they set off for the final procession route to The Briggait at 10.30 AM.

Please note, places for the cycle teams are limited, and only cyclists pre-registered with Glasgow Slow Down will be allowed to participant in the drawing teams. To register your interest please contact [email protected]

AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL TRACE FOSSILS

ILANA HALPERIN 1 APR – 3 MAY

Autobiographical Trace Fossils coincides with the opening of Halperin's largest public commission to date, as Artist-Curator of the geology collection for the new Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery, in the birthplace of Charles Darwin.

For the exhibition Autobiographical Trace Fossils Halperin presents a collection of works including prints, watercolors and a limestone cave cast.

The work explores her longstanding fascination with geological phenomena, focused around the generation of new landmass formed inside and outside the body for example Physical Geology (cave cast/slow time) was formed over 10 months in a petrifying spring in France. These works will be seen for the first time in Glasgow, and were recently shown in significant exhibitions in Berlin.

  "Through the course of my work, I have boiled milk in a 100 degree Celsius sulphur spring in the crater of an active volcano; stood with a friend on both sides of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge; talked with geologists inside a lava tube inhabited by life-affirming bacteria; formed sculptures in caves and hot springs; spent time with geology collections formed inside the body; and held the Allende Meteorite, the oldest known object in the solar system, between my two hands. Geology and life can be very unexpected."

Halperin travels widely, recently returning from a research residency in Japan and has a highly experimental approach to her practice. This can been seen in the process used to create the woodblock prints in the exhibition. The artist used original drawings to make laser-cut wooden forms at DCA Print Studio, which were then submerged in the Blue Lagoon, an active geothermal pool in Iceland and left to rapidly encrust with new silica mineral deposits. Returning to DCA, she cut a similar set of woodblocks and used these to make the large-scale relief prints in the series.

  We are delighted to celebrate the first year in our new gallery with a solo exhibition by Jacqueline Donachie. Donachie presents a new body of work, which brings together her precise linear drawings on paper and in print with a new sculptural piece installed in the gallery.

  Graduating from The Glasgow School of Art's influential Environmental Art department, Donachie is part of a group of artists who maintain the practice of placing their work in a variety of public contexts, engaging directly with the public from inside and out-with conventional gallery spaces.

  She is based in Glasgow and has forged an international reputation for a socially engaged art practice that often inhabits public space, through both permanent works and temporary events. Underpinning her creative practice is a constant attention to both writing and drawing, illustrated by an ongoing series of published books, and a portfolio of academic research. Donachie uses materials that are often influenced by and allude to the everyday urban environment - concrete, steel, and scaffolding. Most recently she used chalk to create Melbourne Slow Down, a mass community cycling event across the city of Melbourne.

  Born in Glasgow in 1969, Donachie studied at The Glasgow School of Art before completing a Masters of Fine Art at Hunter College, New York in 1996. She has exhibited widely, solo exhibitions include: Weight, Leamington Spa Art Gallery (CAS purchase) 2012, Temple of Jackie, Radar, Loughborough University Arts, Loughborough 2011, Speedwork, public work for Glasgow International, Bellahouston Park, Glasgow 2010, Tomorrow Belongs to Me, Hunterian Museum, Glasgow (with Prof Darren Monckton) 2006, Green Place, Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester (Commission/ purchase by the Contemporary Art Society) 2004, and IASPIS, Stockholm (2002).

  Group shows include: Desire Lines, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA), Melbourne 2013; Artists and Science, Weismann Institute, Tel Aviv, 2013; The Land Between Us, Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, 2010, Talkin’ Loud and Saying Somethin’, Gothenburg Museum of Art, Gothenburg, 2008; New; Recent acquisitions, Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Edinburgh, 2002; Here and Now, Scottish Art 1990 - 2001, Dundee Contemporary Arts, Scotland.

  She has undertaken several public commissions, with permanent works at the Centre for Health Science in Inverness and in Darnley, Glasgow. Temporary works include Slow Down, first made in Huntly, Scotland with Deveron Arts (2009) and most recently in Melbourne, with the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (2013).

  She was awarded a Paul Hamlyn Award for Visual Arts in 2005, and has work in several national and international museum collections.
