Design Standpoint Blog
In project 3 âThe Clipâ I am exploring complement and harmony in design. My standpoint is that good design creates a harmony; the aspects that make up the design such as colour, form or material are all complementary of each other. Design can not only be complementary and/or harmonious within a single design, but, when considered together, multiple designs have the potential to complement each other, to produce an over-all harmony.
We can consider Apple as a prime example of these principles. If we look at their product range we can see that the straight lines, simple geometric forms and monochromatic palette of colour are used in every item that Apple produce. This creates an attractive range of products for the everyday consumer; once someone has one Apple product, they are far more likely to buy more of their products or accessories, because of the collective effect this type of coherent design creates.
When I say harmony however, itâs not always all about aesthetics, the functions of design also often complement one another. Consider a bike, built from many individual parts, at the high end of the sport these parts are all individually designed and to the same extent of consideration and manufacturing of the frame itself. The many companies that are making products in this field, even though theyâre competing and trying to produce the best, theyâre essentially working together to create for us the overall product, the bike, which we can build for ourselves by choosing the products that best complement each other, both through function and aesthetic.

Our ad for âSpot Cleaningâ was primarily aimed at middle-aged women. We used the image if a 1950âs housewife in order to appeal to the more âGlamorousâ side of these homely duties. Our product, a cleaning spray in the shape of a hairspray can emphasizes this further. Women typically see cleaning as a burden of a job, our ad aims to represent the product outside of this stereotype. Using flash, the can floats around and the spots seem to âmagicallyâ disappear, suggesting that our product has super qualities that other sprays donât. âKeep your life spic and spanâ, Spot Cleaning spray is not just a cleaning product, but means to have a better life.Â

Precedent 1. The first half of this video is similar to what I want to do, assemble something (maybe a bike) from it's many parts. If I were to add a riding aspect into the video I would also use stop motion techniques to create that.
