Hey I'm Patrick Bonato, illustrator and designer from Austria. Here I'd like to show some of my comics. The first ones are all about the "Toubab", which is a widespread term for white persons in Senegal. I started drawing these during a 3-month stay in this wonderful country in Western Africa. Please note that there is no disapproval or aggression in the word "Toubab", because if there was, the always gentle people of Senegal never would allow their children to call the passing by visitor by that name. That’s the comic I won the “best scenario” for at the 2018 Fumetto comic competition for. The topic was “enough” and it is composed by drawings I have done at the end of my 1-year-trip and in the period right after returning to Europe. So some of them are from Haiti, others from Switzerland, Berlin and some from Austria. I have printed a few copies on a Risograph and plan it to be the first part of a larger publication. More to come, hope you like it!

“…I felt ready to start a new story, one that had been on my mind for a long time already, so I asked Frank and Sally to do the Comics Course in the second half of my stay. And that’s when I felt my residency was really taking off and getting intense. My goal was to accomplish an 8-week-course in two weeks!

I decided to simply follow instructions and completely trust my masters Frank and Sally. Which proved to be very helpful, because all I had to really think about were my drawings and the story, whereas any formal decision (format, grid, number of pages and so on) was already given. The first two assignments propelled me to a formerly unknown speed of creation, that I had not even thought to be possible. Although tough tasks, they allowed me to access a spontaneous, natural flow of my thoughts and ideas about the story. And I’ve finally realized how much more inspiring and fun that was, compared to planning everything in advance and then just executing the plan. I am not exaggerating when I say it was a revelation that really changed my ways of working.”

Now for something else: My contribution to swiss comic magazine “Ampel”. A satirical comment on swiss politics, in my personal approximation to swiss german, hopefully understandable at least for Swiss Germans, and maybe even to Austrians and Germans?

So I haven’t posted any new comics in a while, which doesn’t mean I have not been drawing them! But I’ve only concentrated on the stories and sketches and saved the fun part of colouring for later. Currently I’m doing that in Pittsburgh, USA, in the Rowhouse Comics Residency. My wonderful coach here is the great comic artist Frank Santoro. The TOUBAB is benefitting a lot.
