The Melvin Breadown - Surveil
I made this video! It’s the first one I’ve made ever, which is exciting and scary, but I’m really quite proud of it. It took so much work, so if you’re interested in a Melvin-focused point of view on the new Dimir mechanic, consider taking a look!
Over the past couple of months, myself and a friends have been working on a podcast project, recording the sessions of a game played out over discord, and editing them into a stream-able series.
This is the first episode of that series. We’ll be aiming to upload weekly from now on.
Oceans of Leaves is a low-fantasy homage to fairy tales, history, and coming of age stories, ran in the FATE system. Our aim is not to have a story full of your typical tabletop jokes and puns, nor is it to run a game full of spectacle and action. Instead, Oceans of Leaves is all about a stroll through the woods, and aims to be as relaxing as that, with the occasional bump in the night and historical anachronism.
Though it may take a while for use to get to our feet, we’d super appreciate your support, and for your company on this adventure.

So a friend of mine has started a FATE game as a podcast that I’ve been a part of (try to guess which character). The first episode is up now so I thought I’d spread the word.
“Oceans of Leaves is a game set in 8th Century Europe - with a twist. All bodies of saltwater are instead replaced with deep, deep forests, filled with fae, monsters, and megafauna. This is a game designed to invoke the kind of feeling that old school fairytales will, and follows the story of six children as they grow up, explore the world, and learn who they really are.
GM’d by a high school history teacher and played by a group that’s been together for five years, Oceans of Leaves is a relaxing story that trades spectacle for story, exploring deep lore, attempting historical accuracy, and cherishing the relationships between characters.”

Greetings Mr. Rosewater, may I ask why Spike is portrayed as a female, when only about 1% of professional players are girls, it's not honest to make people feel included in a representation of a player base they don't belong.
Spike is a psychographic of players who use the game as a means to prove something, often to themselves, sometimes to others. My best guess is that about 25% of the players are Spikes. Spikes are way more than just high end professional players.
Magic currently has somewhere around 12 million active players and the female percentage is somewhere between 25% and 35% (in total play including digital - they are a smaller percentage of people playing in organized play - not because they are uncompetitive but because the environment is often not welcoming).
Let’s assume the low end with 25%. That means there are somewhere around 750,000 female Spikes.
In Unglued, we made Timmy a male. In Unhinged, Johnny was a male. We were finishing out a cycle of which none of which so far had been female, so we decided, hey let’s have some female representation in the cycle rather than none.
Diversity and representation is something we take very seriously. Interestingly, I’ve gotten a lot more notes from people happy to see Spike portrayed as the card as a woman than upset by it.
So, all in all, I’m glad we did it and would do it again in a heartbeat if I had to make the decision again.
Anyone who thinks that women don’t belong at Magic tournaments can fuck right the fuck off. I know plenty of women who are great players and those women, on the whole, tend to be a lot spikier than the the competitive men I know. Probably because they have so much more to prove. And why do they have more to prove? Because of shitty attitudes and opinions like the one held by the guy that asked this question.
“I want to be a comedian. A lot of people in my class think I’m funny. Sometimes it can be hard to think of a good joke that isn’t about Trump. But even if you don’t get any laughs, you can usually just keep silent for a few minutes and try again. Sometimes I accidentally make jokes that only I get. Like the other day I tried to tell a joke about that lady who handed out cashews instead of candy for Halloween. But only my friend Aiden knew about the Cashew Lady so nobody laughed. But then later my teacher asked where I got my sources for my constitutional rights paper. And I told her I got them from ‘a sorcerer.’ Even she laughed at that one.”
