All my work youâre missing part 1 of 3
Mine (left) vs Alexâs (right)
As you can see Iâve taken what he showed me on board and for my first attempt, it certainly couldâve gone worse. The head is too small and the body is too long and the lower leg isnât defined well at all, there are plenty of other things Iâve done wrong but those are the three Iâd try and correct first.
Film Logo
My film logo was heavily inspired by angle wings, I also took some inspiration from Mercy who is a character from the game Overwatch.
I wanted it to have a very angelic feel to it while at the same time looking more modern than the traditional pure white wings.
I like the idea of ashen wings on my boss character to make him feel like a fallen angel bent on revenge for his unjust banishment.
Terry English
Terry English is an armourer, he works mainly in the film and television industries, he builds suits of armour for actors to wear and also for people who would like to have their own suit of armour. He has worked for over 50 years and is one of the worldâs leading armourers. His work is used in films including Batman and Robin, Aliens and Man the Iron Mask.
This is the armour from Man in the Iron Mask I really like the chest plate he made for it, especially the golden bands down the middle and sides with quite ornate decoration on them, as well as this I like the golden studs he uses around the edges of the chest plate.
This is Mr. Freezeâs armour from Baman and Robin (1997), I feel this armour has a very alien look to it with all the chrome plating and light up panels on his legs, arms, chest and shoulders. I also really like all of the tubes he has running around the suit especially noticeable around the leg, I think this would be an interesting idea to recreate on a piece of steampunk armour with bronze tubing instead of chrome.
I would say that the Mr Freeze armour doesnât relate much unless I go for a very different style but I do think that his Iron Mask work could tie in quite nicely for Tom the Knight
Pixel art  research
I really like Gustavoâs work because he takes scenes from popular films and makes them into really detailed pixel art while at the same time keeping it very recognisable as to what film itâs from and what scene.
I really like Paulâs work because Itâs so complicated and thereâs so much going on but even though itâs so chaotic all of it is still really well drawn and detailed.
Waneella has a wonderful way of portraying light to make it seem incredibly real, I especially love the detail he put into the Christmas tree.
This just proves how much detail you can put into pixel art to make it long so alive and real.
Pixel games screenshots and reviews.
Pokemon - Diamond
I have been playing Pokemon diamond for quite a while in my spare time and have been in love with the pixel art style since I first launched the game, the game plays exactly like every other Pokemon game but with different types of Pokemon, different story lines and a different setting, as well as updated graphics. The only Pokemon game I had played before this was Pokemon Sapphire which had significantly worse graphics, but that made sense as it was made for the gameboy. Personally I think this is a really good game, the story is engaging and although at times it can get a little frustrating to be beaten by people that just makes me play more to get better and beat them, overall I would recommend this game to anyone who likes to play games casually.
Starbound
This is Starbound, itâs a 2D pixel based adventure game set in the future, there are 5 different characters you can play and each has itâs own ship. the game is very similar to Terraria but itâs set mainly in space, although you can go down to planets and build things such as houses and buildings of other types. the main draw to the game is unlike Terraria you can travel between planets using your ship, I really like this game as it combines two of my favourite things in games, survival and exploration.
Terraria
Terraria and Starbound are both very similar games, both are survival exploration games, however Terraria is far more limited compared to Starbound and far less graphically impressive, it is however still a good game, Â it has many many different enemies to fight, including bosses ranging from giant skeletons to walls of flesh that slowly devour the world. The game also has a vast amount of different materials and so building is really fun and you can make some truly amazing things. This is the main reason I play Terraria now.
I was considering making my game a side-scroller, similar to Starbound and Terraria, to begin with, but decided that I would have more freedom if I went isometric like Pokemon is
Pixel games research
Papers please is a pixel art game in which you play as a border control officer and have to grant or deny entry to all who with to enter the country, the game reminds me a lot of soviet countries, I think the way the did the art matches the games feel very well they use a lot of dark and bland colours, keeping all who wish to enter has faceless silhouettes I think is also a really interesting.
Hotline Miami is a top-down shooter in which you play as a gang of people and go around killing people, itâs a very colourful game and makes me think of the 80â˛s, the game is well known for being quite difficult and quite often involves you dying a lot before completing the level, I think that the pixel art style works very well, although some pixel art games can have very little going on in this one thereâs always something interesting happening.
Super meat boy is a platformer in which you play a small cube of meat trying to save his girlfriend you have to jump past saws spikes and all manner of pointy objects, itâs a very gory game and it works really well with the pixel art style because of all the blood.
I feel this relates because I would consider trying out a pixel style for my game possibly similar to Hotline Miami.
Planetary Annihilation
I have never seen a game that has even come close to the scale that Planetary Annihilation covers, which is an entire solar system, this game is one of the best RTS games Iâve ever played and with the Titans expansion it got even better.
The basics of the game are much like any other RTS you build power stations and mines to gain power and minerals, you have builder units which make all of your buildings, which are used to construct different types of units, there are water, air, land, walker and orbital units and with each type there are plenty of different units for you to crush your enemy with.
On top of its great mechanics, it also has a rather nice and simplistic look to it that, while helping with the framerate as the game can get a little busy, also gives it a wonderfully unique appearance.
I think I would have liked to try out a simplistic style for my game, I donât know whether or not it would work but I think it would have been good to try.
Diablo III
I love the look of Diablo and this is exactly the kind of style that I think would work well in my game, the older fantasy style with obvious gothic inspiration at points, lots of pillars but most importantly an incredible amount of care and detail going into as much of the game as possible.
Iâve played through Diablo 3 once but for me, itâs one of those games you always want to go back and play again, while I was playing it I could get so caught up in the story, the world and the battles that suddenly 3 hours have gone by, Blizzard has a wonderful way of doing this, they make you care about the story of their games and have done it numerous times before and are continuing to do it now.
One of my favourite parts of Diablo is the items, getting better gear, making better gear and most importantly making your gear look amazing. I always found it exciting when I spot a new weapon, checking the stats between it and my old one and if itâs not good enough to replace then it goes in my bag to sell later, thereâs never a waste.
Dungeon of the Endless
I have put 12+ hours into this game almost all of which was with friends and after all of that, I would Highly recommend this to anyone that likes rogue-like games.
Youâve landed on an alien planet and youâre task is to transport your ships power core through each level so that you can power up rooms to protect yourself while you transport the core, to the exit of each level.
Power is something that restricts you heavily because everything you make requires power, the main thing you spend power on is rooms because powered rooms donât allow monsters to spawn in them, also only powered rooms can have working defences.
There are three resources in the game, food, science and industry.
Food is what you use to level up your characters and itâs also what you use to heal yourself.
Science is what you use to research new things such as new towers or better versions of existing towers.
Industry is what you use each time you want to build a new tower.
There is only one reliable way to get these resources and that is by placing a machine that produces one of the three resources, however, you can only place them in a room that has a slot for one, which means that you really need to prioritize what youâre producing each level.
Once you feel like youâre prepared then you can go back to your ship and pick up your core and carry it to the exit, however, upon picking up the core your speed will drop massively and an infinite wave of enemies will start attacking, this will only end once the core is at the exit, there are no other requirements to leave the level so you can leave people behind, which means that usually, you should check everyone is with you before leaving a level.
Because this game is so different from my own I think the only thing I would consider looking at is the carrying of the core, I think that would make for an interesting quest, where you have to protect one of your friends while they take the item or object to the quest location, or perhaps if youâre going solo the quest giver comes along and you have to protect them as they transport it.
Enter the Gungeon Review
This is an isometric style, bullet hell, rouge-like which sounds ridiculous, and it is exactly that, ridiculous.
Enter the Gungeonâs main feature is its large selection of weapons. As well as having a bunch of passive and active items, there are over 175 different guns that can be found, as well as four different starting characters with their own starting weapons and passive abilities. The amount of creativity that went into making these guns is very clear as you can find anything from an RPG to a minigun, to a unicorn horn that vomits a colourful rainbow beam. You can carry as many guns as you can find, but you can only fire one at a time, which changes the pacing significantly when compared to other roguelikes.
The game is a lot more skill focused than some other rogue-likes out there. It focuses more on dodging and not getting hit than it does on simply collecting enough powerful items to win. one of the features I enjoyed a lot was being able to flip tables over during a fight to give myself some quick cover from attackers. The game even rewards the player with a health upgrade for beating a boss without getting hit, emphasizing its focus on skill even further. This is a skill youâd need to make it through the later stages.
I really like the idea of focusing some aspects of my game on skill, for example adding the table cover mechanic and the dodge mechanic. I also think that being able to kick the tables in the direction the player is facing would be a really cool idea.
Final boss (some people just want to watch the world burn)
The final boss for my game is an evil Lich necromancer that wants to burn the surface world to ashes he is very powerful and Iâm not sure how I would want to do the final fight, because I feel that just a straight up battle wouldnât be challenging enough to be fitting of a final boss but Iâm not sure what kind of mechanics I would give to him.
Iâm thinking that there will be a build up before the final fight where you have to break his phylacteries before you can kill the lich.
However, I would like for you to have the option to join the Lich and win the game that way, you would have to go to the battle with a loadout that would be clued at throughout the game but never outright said, the Lich would then take all of your items and teach you all you wish to learn.
Elemental damage
Elemental damage is something that is added onto the normal damage and also gives the target a debuff.
Fire gives the burn debuff, this burns the target for 3 seconds meaning they take an amount of damage every second.
Ice gives the frozen debuff, this causes the target to be frozen in place for 3 seconds.
Water gives the waterlogged debuff which causes the target to be slowed for 3 seconds.
Weapons
The weapons are split into two categories, one-handed and two-handed. (Listed in order of fastest to slowest and least damaging to most damaging in each category)
One-handed weapons include daggers, swords, axes and maces.
Two-handed weapons include greatswords, battleaxes and war-hammers
Their damage can vary but mainly two-handed weapons will do more damage but swing or hit slower, whereas one-handed weapons will swing much faster but not hit as hard.
All weapons can be magical or elemental, or even both. Magical means they will have a bonus to them, perhaps against a certain type of enemy or a bonus to your MP. Elemental means that it will do elemental damage for example Ice.
Armour and Shield Rules
Armour is split into three types:
Light, This provides the lowes armour rating, typically +1 to +2, but gives you no reduced speed.
Medium, This gives you an average armour rating, typically +3 to +4, but gives you a moderate speed reduce.
Heavy, This is by far the most protective armour you can get with an armour rating of typically +5 to +6 however by wearing this you get a hefty speed reduction.
Shields are also split into three types:
Bucklers give a +1 to your armour and you can still use both your hands.
Round shields give you a +2 to your armour rating but you can only use one hand.
Tower shields give you a +3 to your armour rating but you can only use a dagger as a weapon while you have the shield equipped.
