Calvary (2014) dir. John Michael McDonagh
We speak of the virtues of memory, but forgetfulness has its own virtue. In the short run forgetfulness, the suppression of the past, is a risky business, for memory will haunt us if the fabric of society has been torn in our time or in the recent past, but in the long run memory rests or at least becomes blurred, the weights shift, different events become foregrounded, others move to the back burner. The present memorial cult seeks to inflict certain aspects of history and their presumed lessons on our children. But its favorite mantra, "Let us remember, so the same thing doesn't happen again," is unconvincing. A remembered massacre may serve as a deterrent, but it may also serve as a model for the next massacre. We cannot impose the contents of our minds on our grandchildren, who will remember what they need to remember and forget the rest, as society has always done. In any case, we aren't as free to remember and forget (in psychological and moral terms, to resent and forgive) as we like to pretend. [âŚ]I look at those who came after us, who are not guilty, at least not yet [âŚ] a child does not need to be forgiven, for it is a new beginning in itself. In retrospect it makes a blessed union of what was perhaps a bad marriage, redeeming its parents' mistakes by its mere existence. So we start hoping again. I am neither cynical nor starry-eyed. Given past experience, the odds are against hope. But you never can tell.

Wife had to leave work because of a gas leak and all I can think is...
Love indeed has its priests in the poets, and occasionally we hear a voice that knows how to honor it, but not a word is heard about faith. Who speaks to the honor of this passion? Philosophy goes further. Theology sits all rouged and powdered in the window and courts its favor, offers its charms to philosophy. It is supposed to be difficult to understand Hegel, but to understand Abraham is a small matter. [âŚ] I for my part have applied considerable time to understanding Hegelian philosophy and believe that I have understood it fairly well; [âŚ] Thinking about Abraham is another matter, however; then I am shattered. I am constantly aware of the prodigious paradox that is the content of Abraham's life, I am constantly repelled, and, despite all its passion, my thought cannot penetrate it, cannot get ahead by a hairsbreadth. I stretch every muscle to get a perspective, and at the very same instant I become paralyzed.

âWe applaud both her dogged grit and the filmâs message: that there are some people who, despite shutting everyone out of their lives in order to achieve their goals, can repair the untold damage theyâve wreaked by making a small admission of culpability late in Act III, followed by a declaration of love.â

Goop celebrates Real Men, but Goop also celebrates self-love. Â Â âWhen a trip to the sex store left product designer Peder Wikstrom disenchanted, he decided it was time to disrupt the industry.â Iâve never visited a âsex storeâ, but Iâm surprised that anyone who has would go with the expectation of enchantment. The USP of a sex store is not the renewal of oneâs faith in the sublimity of the human soul. Nevertheless, Peder Wikstromâs spirit had sagged unduly, so he called his former coworker Mattias Hulting, who was no doubt wondering why you couldnât get a really lovingly made butt plug any more, and the pair created âfour playful, sexy vibrators, bringing not just their sleek design sense, but also a sense of humor into whatâs often an overly-serious, less-than-aesthetic product categoryâ. Â Â I always find this idea of people bringing âcheekinessâ to anything, let alone erotic implements, one of the most off-putting ideas imaginable. I donât know that you can insert anything into yourself in a âquirkyâ manner. If youâre going to insert, insert, but donât kid yourself that you can insert something that has inverted commas around it â those things are going to hit the sides.

But [their] hands are covered in blood. Bad blood. The kind of blood Taylor Swift hates. [Bad Blood being] one of the great pop-based rebuttals to the ludicrous notion of forgiveness.

We quarantine against the plagueâbut to the plague that is even worse than the Asiatic plague, slander, which corrupts the soul and mind, to that we all open our houses; we pay money to be infected; we greet as a welcome guest the one who brings the infection!
