Done as both a style test (for Between Blue and Gold and for RoK v2) and a way for me to gauge how long it takes me to make a page now: turns out I can do that stuff much faster now!

About the Development of RoK (IMAGE-HEAVY)
Wow, it has been exactly one year since I posted the first page already? Time has gone by unbelievably fast! The story behind Routes of kanto goes farther back than that, though. It is actually my very first big comic project!
Yes, Iâll talk about concept art and all that good stuff! All under a Read More.
The idea of doing a nuzlocke run came to me somewhere in August, 2011. I had been looking at lots of cool gijinkas at the time, and the idea of doing a gijinka run seemed super fun (I was right about that!).
I ran into two problems right off the bat, though: I had no idea what sort of plot I wanted to have and I had barely any experience making gijinkas out of, well, anything.
This is the earliest excerpt Iâve got for Routes of Kanto:
Set in an alternate crapsack universe where there are no humans or PokĂ©mon trainers and every PokĂ©mon ever is a gijinka. Instead, the gijinkas organize teams themselves and fight (or they just go solo, but that usually ends up in death; it should be noted that most of these gijinkas arenât afraid to kill during a battle, and itâs not rare for it to become a matter of life or death)
The Elite Four is basically composed of four teams of the best fighters in the region, plus the champion team. The same goes for the gyms, instead of gym leaders you have a team of gijinkas specialized in one type.
It didnât even have a name back then! It doesnât even resemble the same story.
(Champion Ket would like to contest this whole âsolo fighters die most of the timeâ thing)
Later on, the run would be named PvE: Player vs Everything before I changed it into its final name, Routes of Kanto.
It took me a long time to figure out what sort of theme or plot I wanted this run to have, and even now the finer details of most of the latter plot are still sort of vague in my mind. Youâd think Iâd have it all figured out, working on this for the past few yearsâŠ
The first version of the RoK beginning! Originally, Chika would run away from home to become a fighter. While she does leave Seafoam Islands as well on the final version, sheâs not a runaway anymore.
The other big problem i had was designing the characters themselves: Since I was still worldbuiling, it affected the character design as well. The art style was also originally much closer to my ânormalâ style, became extremely stylized, then stopped at a halfway point between both.
(all artwork dates from 2011-2012 except for Ketâs)
CHIKA
In Chikaâs case i wanted a recognizable, fun design since sheâs the starter. It was⊠easier said than done, especially since so many people design gijinkas for Kanto starters.
I remember her very first design had a military theme of sorts. It was redesigned to this:
Still wasnât what I wanted, though. Eventually, I came into the idea of having her wear a turtleneck (the pun wasnât intended, no)
This was where I got to a point I was happy with. Notice how the style was much more stylized too.
ORVILLE
Orvilleâs case is similar, but I think he may have been even harder to make. A loooot of people design Bulbasaur gijinkas and I had no idea what to do with his vines, so making something different and recognizable was a challenge.
One of these is titled FINALLY2.png, just so you know how fed up i was while trying to draw him. I did eventually stumble into something I liked, though:
Perfect! At least a vine-scarf is somewhat original? I really love how his design came out, though.
DELL
Funnily enough, Dell was first designed way before Chika did, but his first design has absolutely nothing to do with his current incarnation.
Stereotypical book nerd I guess? Which then became this:
Iâm not sure why his hair is blond (he wanted to be a shiny maybe), but I think itâs the first design of his with the current style I use for the comic. I took his Rattata ears out eventually and made his hoodie and hair purple to match the rest of the color scheme.
Dellâs face is actually based off one of the possible player character designs from Animal Crossing, yup.
CHAMPION KET
Ket is a funny case. Originally, Kanto was going to have a standard 6-people team as Champions, but I decided against it because that would give me waaaay to many characters to keep track of and I wasnât sure how to deal with them, plot-wise.
(The original team was Raichu, Pidgeot, Dragonite, Lapras, Ninetales and Pangoro.)
So I decided to go for a solo Champion, from an unexpected Pokemon species, as well.
Ket had to be designed while the page was already starting to get linearted, but they fit so perfectly into the role and the plot that itâs like they had been there all along!
(second on the right was where I said âYES thatâs where I want to go with this character!â)
Took me a few tries, but I finally reached a design I liked! Interestingly, I couldnât seem to settle on this being a female or male character, when I had the sudden epiphany that hey, non-binary people exist and Ket was probably one! Hence why I arrived at a character whose gender is neutral.
(other characters would end up being nonbinary as well, with all sorts of nb identities)
And that ends the RoK concept post! Unfortunately, characters that havenât been introduced yet donât get their turn now, but maybe next year?
12, 19?
12. Is it okay for people to ask you about your process?
Oh, absolutely! I love talking about that sort of stuff so ask away!!
19. What is the most difficult thing for you to draw?
With RoK in particular itâs been fighting scenes⊠Iâm sort of new at this kind of high-motion scene (coordinating battles can be complicated too, I watch anime for inspo lmAO) and weâre at one point in the story where itâs all beginners fighting, so I donât get to draw intense fights, only basic beginner ones :âââ) gotta make tackle fests interesting oh boy
18 and 30 for the Artist Asks!
18. What are you currently trying to improve on?
Hmmm⊠Right now Iâm trying to improve on working faster! (not a lot of progress yet) Aside from that Iâm also practicing stuff like backgrounds and paneling! Especially fun page design.
30. What inspires you to not just make art, but to be a better artist?
I love telling stories! I love love love it and I love seeing the impact it can have on people, that motivates me to keep at it and improve so I can show everyone the stuff Iâm planning to the best of my ability. :âD

Originally this update was going to be almost double the usual size, but I cut it down to the usual size to make things a bit easier on me. Hopefully the next update will come out a bit faster!
Your Patron defines stuff like your movepool, typing and general strength (stats), so what many fighting teams do is look at a teammateâs Patron first and their individual potential later so theyâre more likely to have a powerful/reliable link in the team for battling and general safety purposes
Chikaâs teambuilding works the other way around: she scouts out individual potential first and Patrons are a secondary thing. This is based off peopleâs playstyles in both Nuzlockes and vanilla play!! Some people go for the teams that are powerful and more likely to be successful, while others go for the uncommon Pokemon or personal favorites that might not be all that strong. (i fall into the latter)
No playstyle is right or wrong, but I figured it would be interesting to sort of reflect that with how teams work here. (Lenny here is me when I randomly run into other Brazilians working in animation/illustration)
That dress Dell is wearing is a callback to this extra
The people in that photograph arenât our team, but theyâre based off Chikaâs teamâs beta designs! (i had to adapt Lennyâs) So why wasnât Engieâs included? Because Engie was very easy to design and they look almost the exact same as back then!!Â

Dellâs project is based off Humans of New York, as well as any other project that involves people telling their stories, including these inspired by HONY itself like Trainers of Hoenn
Good god that notebook cover tho
Cameos:
@lost-balloonsâ Anna
@washinuzlockesâs Hyde
@snoozelockeâs Roman
Garchompâs Arlo (which is also mine, sort of)
All the other characters are based on Pokemon of mine from other runs (Nuzlocke or vanilla), as well as some RoK folks I threw in there (hi Ket).

Of course that isnât the actual Mori!
Mori wouldnât have looked so underwhelming.
Remember how I mentioned my Legendary-naming theme is Pokemon TCG Illustrators? Iâm sure itâs pretty clear where Moriâs name comes from (well itâs⊠pretty fitting, haha)
Iâve always pictured Pewter as having a lot of Johto influenceâŠ

Because relying on just a bunch of (easily stolen/lost/destroyed) pieces of metal to tell your progress during your journey is a terrible idea. I figured that if every regionâs League has easily accessible Hall of Fame data, it wouldnât be too much of a stretch for them to have a system that logs all teamsâ progress.
Along with your first badge you receive a 5-digit ID number (you might have guessed it, itâs my explanation for the trainer ID in-game!) and a temporary password that youâre supposed to change ASAP. Subsequent gyms take your ID and add your new badge to your info.
You can view anyoneâs progress if you know their ID, but you need your password to actually log into the system and do more stuff.
ALSO YAY CALLBACKS TO EARLIER PAGES

If youâre wondering what I actually did in-game, I had Len fight the Geodude and Chika fight the Onix instead. I switched the order they fight in the comic for storytelling purposes
(it actually took me a while to realize Len has a double weakness to Rock oops)
âWait does Ket really have that many weaknessesâ yup, I have done a Rhydon solo run in Heartgold and Iâm doing one in FireRed and let me tell you that everyone is out to beat Rock/Ground types, which makes Ket being Champion even more of a feat than I originally meant it to be

Lil bit of worldbuiding there! âPatronâ is how they call Pokemon in this universe (âPocket Monsterâ wouldnât make a lot of sense here). Patrons donât physically exist, but they influence and guide their culture a whole lot. (Iâll write an extra explaining further)
Also, this particular gym student is a shiny Geodude~

There are two usual paths to become a fighter: you either go on a League Journey, traveling through the region and collecting all 8 badges to earn the right to take on the E4, or you join a Gym, which is basically a specialized dojo/fighting school. When a challenger shows up, theyâre matched up with a student of similar skill level, based off how many badges they own.
If itâs their first badge they get IDâd just to check if theyâre underage. You can be a Gym student at any age, but you must be 18+ to go on a League Journey because of the risks.
Usually each Gym has 4 to 6 Leaders, who have the role of teachers/tutors and fight challengers with 7+ badges. Gym Leaders can join the E4 if they want to, but must pass a specific test beforehand.
If you want to specialize in a type, you go for a Gym. If you want to become more of a jack-of-all-trades, you go on a League Journey!
haha, smogon tier jokes

a lot of runs have Butterfree characters in them, but as far as I know itâs not a really respected Pokemon in competitive or vanilla play (it tends to get boxed pretty often)
Lenny is having a REALLY WEIRD week
(and no, I donât have anything against smogon, I just thought itâd be amusing :B)
