For my birthday this year, a trip to Charleston, SC, was planned by my husband for me. Instead of blasting everyone on social media with constant photos of everything I ate, here’s one giant post of it all in one place. Best meals on the trip were:
1) Husk (hail Sean Brock) - Possibly the best burger I’ve ever eaten. Also the cornbread is smoky and heavenly. Pro-tip: You can’t order the burger off of their dinner menu at the main restaurant, but the bar next door has it on the menu all the time. We definitely ate the burger for the appetizer then showed up for our dinner reservations as well.
2) F.I.G. - The Ricotta Gnocchi with Lamb Bolognese practically melts in your mouth. I also ordered a seafood stew which was jam packed with scallops, shrimp, fish and calamari.
3) Xiao Bao Biscuit - Order the Okonomiyaki with everything. You won’t be disappointed but you very well may fill up on the giant cabbage pancake.
4) McCrady’s (hail to you again Sean Brock) - We did the tasting because it was my birthday. Course after course of fresh bites that reminded me of someone roaming their garden and cooking what was available that day.
5) Hominy Grill - The Charleston Nasty Biscuit is SO good. I didn’t think it could be topped until I had the chocolate pudding. Now I know why Alton Brown raves about it.
6) Cru Cafe - This was the first meal on our trip. We usually never order appetizers but saw fried green tomatoes with pork belly croutons on the menu and knew we had to try them. I’m so happy we did.
