Sam Heughan Owes You Nothing
So, Iâve been slowly working up to this all day. Â Because when something upsets me I stew about it, brew it, chew it and sometimes, I can reason it away. Today, however, I canât reason this.
It has come to our attention that Sam deleted his FB comments on Steven Creeâs page. Â Because some self-righteous bitches decided to reprimand him for his language.
Letâs get some things straight:
1) SAM HEUGHAN IS NOT YOUR SON. Â You donât get to tell him how to behave.
2) SAM HEUGHAN IS 35 YEARS OLD. Â He can say whatever he wants using whatever language he wants.
3) SAM HEUGHAN IS ALLOWED TO BE HIMSELF ON HIS PRIVATE FB ACCOUNT. Â This isnât his Twitter where he is very polite and praising of everyone and everything. Â Heâs also very politically correct on Twitter. Â But on his private FB he can and should be able to communicate with friends however he wants.
4) YOU DO NOT HAVE A PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH SAM HEUGHAN. Just because you tweet him every day saying hi, notice me, what ya doing?, notice me, tell me happy birthday, notice me, tell me get well soon, notice me, DOESNâT MEAN HE KNOWS YOU. Â
Would you go up to someone on the street who was using language you didnât like and reprimand them? No. You wouldnât. Youâd likely shake your head and move on. Â YOU DONâT KNOW SAM. Â YOU ARE A STRANGER TO HIM. Â Treat him like the stranger you are. Â Let him live a life apart from Outlander, otherwise you will end up with an actor who will do his job, tolerate his fans, and cut himself off from you. Â And I wouldnât blame him one little bit.Â
I get it. Â Actors like him are rare. Â Iâve never seen any actor interact with fans as much as he does. Â And I think he does it because he LOVES his show, and ADORES his job and ENJOYS his character. Â BUT HE IS NOT JAMIE. Â Repeat that to yourselves 10 times slowly. Â In fact, write it out in cursive 50 times on a sheet of paper. Â
The next time someone is privy to this information I hope they donât share it. Because we donât deserve these tidbits. Â Some people canât handle it, and because they canât handle it, itâs been ruined for everyone. Â Heâs been shamed and embarrassed and he did nothing wrong. Â
Final thought: Â the next time Sam is engaging in friendly banter on Social Media, stay out of it. Â You wouldnât go up and interrupt strangers during a conversation with what you think is witty repartee. Â So donât do it to Sam. Â Let him tweet whoever he wants and stay out of it. Â Just read it, donât comment. Can you do that? Can you just let the man be? Â If he puts out a tweet that invites interaction (like Mon Scotland!) by all means, tweet away! Â Have fun! But if heâs tweeting William Shatner, leave off. Â Let him have his fun. Heâs not looking at your tweets anyway. Â Heâs looking for Billâs. Â Pretty sure your tweets just frustrate him because they are in the way.
Sam is not your friend. Â Heâs a guy who plays a character you love. The only thing Sam Heughan owes you is a great portrayal of Jamie. You are getting that already. Â But personally? Â Sam Heughan owes you nothing. Â

The #SVYALit Presentation : The issues, the books, and what we can do with this information
Statistics & Essential Information
It is estimated that anywhere between 1 out of 6 to as high as 1 out of 3 girls and 1 out of 7 to as high as 1 out of 5 boys is the victim of some type of sexual violence by the time they reach age 18. It is also believed that true statistics are higher than we think because the incidences of abuse are under-reported. (Sources: 1 in 4 ; The CDC ; The Advocacy Center, RAINN)
In the US, someone is raped every 2 minutes. (RAINN)
For every 161 rape cases filed, only 1 is found to be a false accusation. This is important because it means that more than 99% of rape allegations are true. If someone tells you they are the victim of sexual violence, you should believe them.
âA new study has found that many adolescent girls view sexual violence and harassment a normal part of middle school and high school life. The disturbing findings of the "Normalizing Sexual Violenceâ study, being published in the next issue of the journal Gender & Society, expose âhow objectification, sexual harassment and abuse are viewed as everyday experiences for many young women.â - from A Might Girlâs facebook page https://www.facebook.com/amightygirl/posts/666158020087181

How to Use the #SVYALit Project Index:
âBooks are a safe way to help teens process topics we know they are thinking about. Here are some things you can do in your library to get the discussion going in your libraryâand also implement ways to help teens who themselves have been impacted by SV.
Contact your local hospital and see if they have a SANE nurse (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner). SANE nurses can come to your school and library and give talks about healthy relationships, consent, unhealthy and abusive relationships, recognizing the signs of sexual violence and more. They will usually do this for free as part of their outreach.
Put together a panel of local communities who work with youth to discuss the various resources in your immediate community that can help teens. Or have a health fair and include this type of information.
Have a book discussion group on the various titles we are discussing in SVYALit, and watch the author discussion panels.
At the very least, share relevant information with your community by building displays, putting together booklists and resources, and discussion guides. For example, a variety of discussion guides for Speak can be found online.
There is evidence to suggest that promoting gender equality can help decrease sexual violence. So consider creating integrated book displays based on themes like plagues, dystopians, action and adventure, etc. instead of promoting gendered displays like âboy booksâ and âgirl books.â See also: Boys Will Be Boys and Girls Will Be Accomodating by author Laurel Snyder.â - excepted from Launching a Dialogue About Sexual Violence in YA Litâand in Real Life at School Library Journal
