Beyond the wall / Über die Mauer hinaus
Hamburg 2016
European graffiti and street art photography and canvas exhibition
The exhibition “Beyond the wall / Über die Mauer hinaus” (“Au-delà du mur” in french) was creating during my studies in Intercultural Communication and Museology in Central and Eastern Europe at Sorbonne University in Paris. It is dedicated to the discovery of the urban arts and their issues on a European scale. The idea for this exhibition came during lectures by professionals in the field of museum work and in particular during the presentation of Claire Calogirou on urban art and the exhibition “Faire le mur” which took place in Nantes, France, in 2011, in order to show art on the fringes of visual arts practice.
A call for participation in a contest with the theme "On the wall beyond" - in reference to the Berlin Wall and the wall as a material for urban artists, circulated in various European cultural institutions in social networks and throughout subcultural and specialized shops. Each participant could send one or two photographs of their own graffiti.
A jury of three experts and active street artists selected the artworks presented in the exhibition: Tarek Ben Yakhlef, artist and director of the first Parisian graffiti magazine Paris Tonkar Magazine, Claire Calogirou, curator at the Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations in Marseille, a specialist in cultural practices in the urban environment, and the internationally famous Czech artist David Černý, director of the interdisciplinary cultural centre Meetfactory in Prague. The winner of the contest, also presented in the exhibition, was the Czech artist Tomáš Junker aka Pauser. He has also been the organiser of the street art festival in Olomouc, Czech Republic, for the past 8 years. The photographs presented come from France, Germany, Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic and Croatia.
The photographs and artworks have been exhibited in France, at Sorbonne University and the Maison de l’Europe in Nantes, at the French Institute in the Czech Republic, as well as at Meetfactory in Prague and at the Alliance Française in Łodž, Poland.
In cooperation with the Franco-German intercultural festival arabesques, the Studio Longboard, a music studio and longboard shop and the MS Stubnitz, an historical boat and a cultural place in Hamburg, will exhibit “Beyond the wall / Über die Mauer hinaus“ with new artworks on large canvases by contest winner Tomáš Junker in Germany for the first time.
