Hypocrite Chap:2 She Isn't You
Hey guys! Thank you so much for all the love and support for this fic! I think this chap is a softer/quiter than the first one, but hopefully you all still enjoy it! I tried my best to edit this (I really hate editing đ) so sorry for any typos. As always, thank you for reading, and I'd love to hear your thoughts after this chapter! Also this is the last prewritten chapter so my updates may not be too frequent but hopefully they won't take to long!
CW: Anxiety/panic symptoms (fidgeting and skin picking), mention of casual hookups, some language
âYou can do this. You can do this. Itâs just a phone call. Just one call.â Paige thought as her phone shook slightly from her trembling hands.Â
Sheâd made plenty of phone calls in her lifetime, so why was this one any different?Â
Of course she knew the answer, but she absolutely refused to let the brunette have this kind of control over her.Â
âFuck.â She sighed. Running a single hand down her face.Â
Azzi's contact sat open on her screen. Bright and taunting. The contact still read âmy princess đâ. She couldnât bring herself to change it. Mostly because it was true. Azzi was her princess. She always had been, and she always would be. âJust push the damn button.âÂ
âHey Z!â KK called from the fourier.Â
She slipped on her shoes and moved to grab her coat. The two friends had spent the night hanging out and watching a movie they had been too lazy to see when it came out in theaters.Â
âYeah?â She yelled from her place in the kitchen.Â
âHave you talked to nika lately?âÂ
Azzi sat the dish towel back on the counter. Moving to join the younger girl at the front of the house. âNoâŠwhy?âÂ
Azzi couldnât remember the last time sheâd talked to the brunette.Â
They had been friends, sure, but Nika had always been closer to Paige. Hell, the two had matching tattoos! So after the breakup, Aziâs relationship with the Croatian had naturally drifted a bit.Â
âNo reason really. I was talking to her the other day and she said something about needing to text you.â She shrugged.Â
âOh, well I havenât heard from her.âÂ
Azzi pulled her phone from her back pocket. Scrolling through her most recent messages. Making sure she hadnât missed it.
âWell, maybe sheâll text soon. I was just wondering.â The younger girl explained.Â
Azzi nodded. Slipping the device back into her pocket. âMaybe.â She shrugged.Â
âOk well Iâm gonna head out. See you tomorrow?â Kk asked. A singular eyebrow raised with a smile spreading across her face.Â
âOf course dummy. I have to work too.â Azzi laughed.
KK laughed along as she moved to pull the door open. âYeah yeah, I know.â She laughed again. âBye Z.âÂ
She closed the door behind her letting out a sigh as silence took over her house once again.Â
She hadnât accomplished much since Kk left. Sheâd washed the bowls they used for their popcorn, cleared the coffee table, and taken a shower.
Sheâd tucked herself into bed, her stack of work papers that needed reviewing left completely untouched. âIâll do them tomorrow.â She thought. It was the same thing sheâd been telling herself for the past three days.Â
Her phone brightness was low as she scrolled through her socials. She tried her best to stay off of social media as much as possible, but sheâd always told herself it wasnât awful in small doses.Â
She scrolled for a while longer before looking at the clock on her phone. 11:30. She knew it really wasnât too late, but it was way past her usual ten oâclock bedtime. Â
She turned the small device off. Plugging in the charger before setting it on her small oak wood night stand next to her bed.Â
âWhat the hell?â Azzi mumbled, sleep still laced in her voice.Â
She wiped her eyes as she moved to sit up. She reached over to grab her phone that was buzzing on the nightstand. 12:30 AM. Sheâs only slept an hour.Â
She sighed. Taking a second to read the caller ID, and when she did she let out a short gasp. âPAIGEY!!! đâ.Â
Her hand shook slightly as she held the small device. âThereâs no way this is real. Right ?â Â She thought.
If she wasnât awake before, she certainly was now. Â
A million thoughts flooded her brain as she looked at the dimly lit screen. This was definitely real.Â
She took a deep breath and accepted the call before she could second guess herself.Â
âHey.â Paige mumbled.Â
Tears immediately filled Azziâs eyes. Gosh she hadnât heard that voice forever, or at least it felt like it.Â
âSorry, I know itâs late. I just I-âÂ
âItâs ok.â Azzi said. âWhatâre you-â Her voice trailed.Â
â I-I donât really know. I just wanted to talk to you. Like really talk to you.â The blonde's voice shook slightly with a mix of hurt and longing.Â
âOh, ok.â Azziâs gaze fell to the comforter that was covering her lap, not sure what to say next.Â
Silence fell between the two. Thoughts running through both of their heads, but neither knew the right way to express them.Â
âIâm sorry I shouldnât have called you. Iâm just gonna go.â Paige mumbled so quietly the brunette almost had to strain to hear her.Â
âPaige wait-â âGosh, why did she sound so desperate?â  âAre you-is everything ok?âÂ
âYeah yeah.â The line fell quite again. Paige single handedly picked at the skin around her nails. âI just-â She sighed. She knew the younger girl could probably hear her distress through the phone but she didnât care. âIâm sorry.â She paused again. âReally, Z I am. For everything.âÂ
âWell shitâ This was not at all what Azzi was expecting. Did she know Paige was sorry? Of course she did, The blonde had texted her those two words a thousand times since theyâd broken up. But never once had she thought the blonde would call. Never once did she think sheâd hear her say it.
Donât get her wrong, even through all the pain and heart ache Azzi knew she played a part in how painful the breakup had been. And as much as she wanted to, she could never hate Paige for leaving.Â
âLook, I know you probably donât wanna hear me pour my heart out about how sorry I am, but I need you to know that I really am sorry, and that it wasnât a decision that I made lightly or easily. I never want you to think that I didnât-âÂ
âI know you do.â A single tear ran down her cheek as she let the words fall from her mouth. âAnd I-I do too. I donât think Iâll ever stop.â
Neither one of them said those three words. They didnât need to.Â
âWhy is this so hard?â Paige asked. Her voice was weak, and Azzi could tell she was also crying.Â
Paige hadnât meant to let the words slip.Â
âBecause weâve never really known a world where we didnât have each other.âÂ
The silence was thick, but the awkwardness that once lingered was gone. Replaced with a new sense of grief and longing.Â
âHow do we do this? Pretend-â She took a breath. Giving herself some time to regather her thoughts. âHow am I supposed to pretend I donât care? Pretend youâre not-â She sighed. âNevermind.â She stopped herself before she could say anything incredibly stupid. âWe should probably get some sleep.âÂ
Azzi blinked. âPretend Iâm not what?â she thought.Â
âYeah. We probably should.â She played with the hem of her sleep shirt. Allowing herself to become distracted from the conversation. âBut, we should talk. Like really talk. Soon.âÂ
It almost sounded like the tiniest smile had taken place on the blonde's lips.Â
âMe too.â Azzi said. Blush creeping onto her tear stained cheeks. âGoodnight Paige.âÂ
Azzi sighed as the line went dead. She placed the phone back in its rightful place on her nightstand, staring up at the blank ceiling.Â
She definitely wasnât falling asleep after that.Â
She gently ran her hands down her face. Trying to process what the hell just happened.Â
âWoah P! What the hell happened to you?â Nika asked as she looked over a few designs for her first client.Â
âDid you sleep? LikeâŠat all?â Ice asked with a chuckle.Â
Paige groaned. She hadnât had time to do much with her hair, thanks to her slow start this morning. Not to mention the very prominent dark circles that had formed under her eyes.Â
âI donât wanna talk about it.â She grumbled. âAnd for the record, I did sleep.âÂ
It wasnât a lie. She had slept. It just hadn't been very long, or very restful.
âEverything ok?â Ice asked.Â
Paige ran her fingers through her tangled blonde hair. âI donât know. Yes, no, maybe.â She shrugged.Â
âAlright.â Nika placed the black design book back in its place. âWeâve got an hour before the shop opens. Start talking.â She prompted.Â
âWell shit.â Thereâs no way out of this now.Â
âI called Azzi last night.âÂ
Her eyes slammed shut as she waited for her friends to respond.Â
âYou what?!â Ice exclaimed.
âShit!â Nika replied.Â
âWhy?â The taller girl questioned.Â
âI-it was Nikaâs idea!â Paige pleaded.Â
Nika gasped, placing a hand on her chest dramatically. âDonât you dare put all of this on me.âÂ
Paigeâs eyebrows shot up to her hair line. âYouâre the one who said I should call her.â Â
âOk ok ok, maybe I did. But I wasnât expecting you to do it so soon! I thought you would- I donât know, think it over first or something.â She said, as her hands flapped through the air dramatically.Â
âWait, so what happened?â Ice asked as she set down some of her tools sheâd been messing with.Â
âI apologized.â She shrugged. âFor everything.âÂ
Silence filled the space as the friends took in the weight of the situation.Â
âAnd whatâd she say?âÂ
Paige thought back on their conversation. The words that loomed so heavily in the background.
âShe didnât say much. Said we should talk.â She shrugged. Trying and failing to take some of the tension out of her shoulders.Â
Nika stood from her spot and made her way towards the blonde. Pulling her into a tight hug. âI know I was teasing you, but Iâm proud of you. Seriously, this is a big step.â She said as she took a step out of the blondes space.Â
Ice smiled. âDonât be so hard on yourself P.âÂ
She sighed. âWhat if I make it worse?â Her gaze shifted to her hands. Where sheâd been subconsciously picking at the skin around her nails. Again. âWhat if I hurt her more than I thought I did?âÂ
âSheâs giving you a chance P, and the best thing you can do is listen.â Ice answered. Placing a solid hand on the thinner girl's shoulder.Â
âItâs not gonna be easy, and sheâs probably gonna say somethings that you donât wanna hear. But, itâs important that you listen.â Nika added.Â
âAnd really listen. To everything.â Ice finished.Â
âNo way! Az, Come here!âÂ
Azzi shuffled across the old carpet floor, following the voice towards the back of the small bookstore.Â
â They have it!â Paisley practically squealed.
She was holding a copy of a book that the two had been searching for when they first met.Â
âWow.â Azzi mumbled, reaching to take the book from the blonde's hands. âIs this the only copy?âÂ
Paisley turned and carefully pulled a second book off the shelf.Â
The brunette gripped the book a little tighter.Â
âWe could read it together!â She blushed. Her face was radiating with pure joy.Â
âYeah yeahâŠof course.â Azzi muttered clearly uninterested in the book and the girl in front of her.Â
Donât get her wrong, sheâd been waiting for the day she could finally get her hands on a copy, but something was wrong. This situation was wrong.Â
She didnât want to read the book with Paisley. This book was the same book sheâd been begging Paige to read with her for months. She spent hours searching for a copy online and in stores. And now that it was in her hands, the purple cover shining in the light, something was missing. Someone was missing.  Â
âAz? You ok?â Blonde eyebrows furrowed, trying to dissect why Azzi had been so distant today.Â
âGosh, could she stop calling me that?â she thought.Â
Azzi wasnât trying to be rude, but there were very few people in this world that called her by that nickname, and Paisley shouldnât be one of them.Â
âYeah Iâm fine.â She mumbled.Â
âAre you sure? Youâve been quiet today.âÂ
Her brows furrowed even further as she focused her gaze more intently on the curly headed girl.Â
âYeah, just tired is all.â She shrugged. It wasnât completely a lie. She was tired. Thanks to the three hours of restless sleep sheâd gotten the night before.Â
âOh ok, well we can get these and then I can drop you back at your place if you want?â She offered.Â
Paisley was sweet. She really was, but she wasnât Paige. And after last night. That fact was starting to weigh on Azzi even more than before.Â
âYes please.â Azzi nodded, still keeping her grasp on the book firm.Â
Once they checked out, Paisley placed their bags in the back and quickly rounded the car to open the door for the brunette.Â
Azzi offered a small smile as she slid into the black chevy malibu. It was nice and Azzi knew she had just recently bought it. She looked around at the still unfamiliar car.Â
âSo, I know we had to cut today a little short, but did you have fun?â The blonde asked as she pushed the start button and the engine roared to life.Â
âYeah, I did. Sorry I wasn't much fun today.â She replied.Â
âDonât worry about it. Rest is important.â She paused, switching on her turn signal to pull out of the small parking lot. âDidnât sleep well last night?âÂ
âAny particular reason?â She asked, taking a second to glance at the brunette.Â
âOh, ummâŠI stayed up a little later than normal and it didnât help that I just couldnât sleep.â Azziâs gaze shifted out the window as her mind drifted to last night's conversation.Â
âI know I already asked but youâre sure everythingâs ok?âÂ
Paisley gave a small smile and placed a hand on Azziâs knee.Â
Azziâs body tensed. The touch was all wrong, too cold, too heavy, too much like Paisley, and not at all like Paige.Â
Paisley didnât notice. Her hand stayed in place as she continued to drive with one hand. This was the most contact the two had ever had.Â
Azzi took a deep breath before gently shifting her leg. Hopefully sending the message that she was getting uncomfortable.Â
âSorry.â Paisley mumbled. Pulling her hand back as a dark flush crept up her neck. She ran the now empty hand against her pants, not quite sure what to do with it.Â
Azzi just smiled, her gaze never once leaving the window.Â
Silence filled the car. The only sound being the soft hum of surrounding traffic and the soft music flowing through the speakers.Â
âCan I ask you something? Itâs kind of personal soâŠ"Â
Her breath hitched. âUmmmâŠsure.â She nodded, finally turning her gaze towards the woman next to her.Â
Her blonde hair was shining from the sun, and her blue eyes held a shimmer of worry.Â
âI know you and your girlfriend just broke up not too long ago.â The air in the car thickened as Azzi waited for the brunette to continue. âWhich is why I wanted to wait to askâŠI wanna take you out. Somewhere nicer than our normal dates.â
âDates?â Azzi hadnât known this was a date.Â
Sure, she knew Paisley liked her, and maybe there was a part of Azzi that was actually starting to like the blonde too, but never once had they talked about a date. She blissfully thought they were just hanging out.Â
âBut, before I can actually ask you out. I need to knowâŠdo you-â Azzi's pulse raced in her ears and her hands had become sweaty. âDo you still love her?âÂ
This time, Azzi gasped. There was no hiding it.
Love. It was one word, but it was so much more. The only word to describe what she felt for Paige, but also a word that would never be strong enough. A word that lingered and sat untouched for months.Â
âPaisley I-â The words died in the back of her throat. If she was being honest, she wasnât even sure what she was trying to say.Â
âItâs ok if you do. We donât have to change anything unless you want to. I just need to know before I put my all into this.â The car came to a stop at the light.Â
âCould this car ride be any longer?âÂ
âI-â She tore her gaze away from the blonde. If she was gonna have this conversation, she couldnât do it looking at the blonde hair and blue eyes that were just slightly the wrong color. âYes.â It came out quieter than she had hoped. âI-I do.âÂ
Paisley didnât speak, and out of the corner of her eye, Azzi could see the blonde's grip tighten around the black steering wheel.Â
Paisley visibly swallowed before giving a small nod. âHas there been anyone else? Since you two-âÂ
There was a pause before Azzi finally spoke. âYes,â She closed her eyes. Thinking of all the women sheâd kissed, slept with, and flirted with since the breakup. Each one of them failed to fill the void that Paige had left. Avoid that only Paige was meant to fill. âBut nothing serious. Just some hookups, kisses, and a couple first dates here and there.â Her voice remained quiet as her hand found the hem of her shirt and began to fidget it with it. A nervous habit sheâd had since she was young. One Paige had always picked up on, and stopped by wrapping Azziâs hand in hers.
Paisley took her foot off the break, allowing them to continue their path down the winding road towards Azziâs house. âWhat was her name? Youâre girlfriend I mean.âÂ
âThatâs-thatâs a beautiful name.âÂ
Azzi smiled. A smile that only came with the mention of the blonde.Â
A silence fell over them once again. Still charged, and a little heavy. Neither one of them spoke the rest of the ride. Letting the noise of the city and the radio fill the space.Â
âSoâŠhowâd it go with Paisley?âÂ
âWhat? I canât know how my daughter's date went?â The older woman teased through the phone.Â
âIt wasnât a date.â She rolled her eyes, knowing her mom couldnât see her.Â
She hadnât done much since Paisley had brought her home. Sheâd finally finished her reports for work, watched a couple episodes of The Agency, and warmed-up some left overs before finally taking a shower and settling in for the night.Â
Azzi shifted slightly, the covers ruffling around her. She knew her mom meant well, but she really didnât feel like having this conversation right now.Â
The silence sat a beat too long, and it didnât go unnoticed by Katie. âWhatâs wrong honey? Did something happen?â
Katie knew her daughter better than anyone, and she could most certainly tell something was off.Â
âShe-she asked about her.â Azzi said. Looking down at the dark grey comforter she had taken from her shared bedroom with Paige. It had been the first thing they bought for their house. Paige claimed it complemented the wall color, but Azzi knew sheâd bought it because the brunette loved the material. âShe asked if I still love her.â She mumbled.Â
âItâs ok. She had every right to ask.âÂ
âThat doesnât make it any less hard.â Katie reasoned.Â
Azzi sighed. âNo, but I canât blame her for it. Iâm sure Iâd want to know too.âÂ
âDid you tell her the truth?âÂ
Katie didnât need to ask for Azziâs answer. She knew her daughter loved the blonde more than anything in the world. And the breakup was affecting her more than she was letting on.Â
âI did.â She answered. âIt wasnât easy though.âÂ
âItâs not supposed to be.âÂ
Azzi sighed, running her hands down her face. âWhy canât this just be easy mom?â Tears flooded her eyes, and her voice wavered with emotion.Â
âBecause you love her. And Paisley, as great she may be, isnât her. And she never will be.âÂ
âI donât wanna replace her. I just want it to stop hurting.â She explained. âI just wanna stop seeing her in every blonde woman I see, I wanna stop going to the grocery store and looking for her favorite chips, I wanna stop rolling over and wishing she was there, I just-I just wanna stop hurting.âÂ
The tears flowed freely now but she didnât move to wipe them.Â
âHoney, listen to me-â Katie paused, giving her daughter time to get reoriented. âThis is a big change for both of you. You have to give yourself time to heal. I know itâs painful, and I never want to see you hurting, but you canât rush these things.âÂ
âBut how can she just be soâŠso normal? Like nothingâs changed.â
Azzi knew she wasnât being fair. She hadnât heard much about Paigeâs life after the breakup, aside from what she saw on instagram and what she had heard from KK, but she knew the blonde wasnât doing well.Â
âAzzi, honey, you know Paige and you also know that you canât judge people's lives based on what they choose to post on social media.â She paused for a second. âIf you truly believe sheâs doing ok then Iâll let you believe that, but something tells me thatâs not how you really feel.âÂ
Her mom was right, that's not how she felt. She knew Paige was hurting. Drowning even. Probably just as much as she was. âBut if she was hurting just as much as I am, why wouldnât she just fix it?â she cried.Â
âI donât know honey, but you and I both know sheâd never hurt you on purpose.âÂ
And she did. She did know that, but all logic was out the window. âIt doesnât feel that way.âÂ
âI know it doesnât.âÂ
âI just want her back.â It came out as more of a whisper, as her voice cracked around the tears that were still rolling down her cheeks.Â
âI know you do sweetie. I know.âÂ
Katie did her best to console her through the phone, but she knew what her daughter really needed was a hug. Sheâd have to come visit soon. She hadnât even seen Azziâs new house yet.Â
âWhat do I do?â She asked. âAbout Paisley.âÂ
Finally, she reached up to dry her tears. Her sleep shirt now stained the ones that had managed to fall.Â
âWell, do you like her?âÂ
Azzi shrugged. âI-I guess so. Sheâs sweet, and sheâs kind, and she loves to read, but sheâs not-âÂ
âSheâs not Paige.âÂ
âNo.â Her hands found the hem of her shirt under the covers as she started to roll the fabric back and forth. âAnd sheâs not supposed to be. Sheâs supposed to be Paisley. But, itâs just-itâs not enough.âÂ
âSo you break up with her.â Katie prompted.Â
âHow do I break up with her if we never started dating?âÂ
Katie chuckled. âOk, maybe breakup wasnât the right term. This doesnât mean you two canât hangout and it certainly doesnât mean you have to stop being friends. It just means she isnât the right person.âÂ
âNo one else ever will be.â Azzi mumbled.Â
She hadnât meant to say it out loud.Â
âThen I think you know what you need to do.â Katie prompted. Azzi smiled on the other end of the phone. Grateful that her mom somehow always found a way to make any situation better. âGet some rest honey. Iâll call you tomorrow.âÂ
âOk, Thank you mom. Really, it means a lot.âÂ
âAnytime sweetheart.â She smiled. âI love you.âÂ
When the line finally went dead, Azzi let out a sigh, placing the phone in its place on her nightstand before turning out the light.Â
She wasnât sure when, but eventually sleep had pulled her under and wrapped her in a sense of comfort. Quieting the rapid sounds of her brain, and soothing the aching of her heart.
