“well, i think it’s awesome if you propose. why should he be expected to?” jimin shrugged, considering that concept for a second. in modern times, she couldn’t see any reason why old fashion rules should apply. “you really think he’s ready? how would you even ask? what ring? can i come help you shop? oh, shit. this is amazing.”

“i- okay, slow down!” she laughed, shaking her head. penny sat on the edge of the bed and sighed. “i don’t know anything yet, i’m just throwing the idea out there right now. but yes, you’re helping me. it’s why i’m telling you.” penny looked up at jimin. “but... he sent me a picture of a wedding at greece and said he would love to get married there. if that’s not a big hint, i don’t know what is.”

ambrose nodded slowly and small at her response, accepting what she said and taking a second for himself. “you know what happened to alecta.” he started, already feeling the ache in his chest. “and she suffered from mental illness for years, that part was always true.” he picked at a thread on the rip in his jeans, willing himself to keep it together. “when we were sixteen, she found out she was pregnant, and she decided to keep it. and i was scared, penelope. i was terrified of it, but she made that choice and i had to be okay with that.” he explained, glancing her way. “but she had a miscarriage, and it broke her. she just wasn’t the same after that. and two months later, it was… she was just gone.”

penelope quietly nodded her head, already knowing about alecta. she wasn’t going to lie, she sometimes wished she could’ve met her. she sounded like such a good person from what she’d heard from ambrose. what ambrose was telling her now was something she didn’t expect at all. she looked up from her lap and stared at him in shock, even if all she could see is his side profile. it all made sense. why he was always nervous whenever she joked or talked about kids. penelope didn’t know what would be appropriate to do. she stayed quiet for a moment after he finished speaking. “i don’t know what to say...” she finally said, voice quiet. “i’m sorry, ambrose. i didn’t know it was like that. otherwise i wouldn’t have been throwing the topic around like that.”

“so,” ambrose let out a sigh as he sat down at the other end of the couch to penelope, hands interlocking as he rested his forearms on his thighs. there were memories swirling in his mind that he’d long buried, and he didn’t know how he was going to approach any of this. “you deserve to know this, and i really should’ve told you sooner, but it’s hard to talk about. i haven’t ever talked about it, actually.”

penny sat nervously on the other side of the couch, back against a pillow against the armrest, legs criss-crossed. she was a little worried, about him and about whatever he wanted to tell her. she didn’t know what to expect. her hands were fiddling with the pillow in her lap, staying mostly quiet. “it’s okay, take your time.”

“please, when do i ever blab about anyone’s-… okay, about your secrets.” jimin spoke with a sheepish smile, knowing her loyalty was more with penelope than anyone else who told her things. jimin looked at friend pacing with an amused expression, knowing how she could get sometimes. “oh, holy shit!” the words came out to loud and jimin covered her mouth with her hand, eyebrows shooting up from the surprise of it. “what the fuck? i didn’t expect that.” she laughed, quieter now.

penny raised an eyebrow at her playfully. “glad you know yourself.” she joked. “hey, shh!!” penny quickly shushed her, ready to put her hand over her friend’s mouth, but she didn’t. “well, no one would think that i’d ever do it. but... i guess we talk about getting married a lot, but he always seems nervous about it and... i don’t know, it’s been a long time and he still didn’t propose, so... what if i do it?”

“you can’t tell anyone, not even riley!” penelope warned in a whisper as she closed the door to the room she shared with ambrose. she’d dragged jimin in there, and thankfully, their partners were too distracted catching up to notice them disappear. “okay, so,” she sighed, pacing for a few seconds before forcing herself to stop. “i think i might propose to ambrose.”

“this is too kind, penny. i-… thank you.” he repeated it again, not knowing what else to say to show how grateful he was for the gift. he brought the bunny closer to him, giggling as he watched her nose move as she sniffed around the new environment. “don’t say that.” he shook his head at his husband’s words, though he couldn’t take his eyes off her. “brown… and white…” he thought out loud as he stroked her ears, thinking of a name, lips pursed slightly. “what about sugar? get it?”

“anytime.” she laughing a little, knowing how he must be feeling when he had no idea what else to say. minho was standing nearby, smiling widely at the sight of the new addition to their family, and penny truly felt like she did something good for once. “awh, that’s such a cute name!” penny cooed, hands over her mouth because of how cute it was. “i think it really suits her.”

jinwoo had just changed into his new sweater - an oversized, yellow one - he’d gotten himself as a birthday treat to himself when penelope turned up in the room, right in time for him to have sat down with his coffee. “penelope!” he beamed, giggling at what she’d said. he tilted his head as he looked at the unusual box, but after a few seconds he realised there was a sound from inside it that he somewhat recognised, gasping loudly. “you didn’t…” he started to open the box and when he did his smile was so wide that it made his eyes crinkle. “is this really for me?!” he reached in to pick the little rabbit up gently, cooing at them for a moment. “they’re gorgeous! thank you, thank you, thank you.”

“i did.” she said with a big grin, watching as he opened the box and making the exact reaction she expected. “yes, all yours! and she doesn’t have a name yet, so you can pick one yourself.” penny couldn’t stop smiling, feeling so much better now that they had gone past what happened while jinwoo was gone for the tour. “awh, is that a new baby bunny?!” minho asked loudly when he walked back into the area. “yeah, definitely better than the present i got him.” he joked.

“happy birthday!” penelope cheered as soon as the door was opened, only to realize that it was minho. “wrong person, penny.” he responded with a little laugh. her shoulders slumped as she laughed at herself too. he let her in, and she walked inside with a brown box with holes around it, and a yellow bow on top. once she spotted jinwoo at the dining table, she skipped over happily. “happy birthday! no offense to whatever minho got you, but i’m so sure my present will top it.” she said with a wide smile, putting the box down on the table and gently pushing it towards him, waiting for him to see it’s contents.
