penny sat nervously on the other side of the couch, back against a pillow against the armrest, legs criss-crossed. she was a little worried, about him and about whatever he wanted to tell her. she didn’t know what to expect. her hands were fiddling with the pillow in her lap, staying mostly quiet. “it’s okay, take your time.”

ambrose nodded slowly and small at her response, accepting what she said and taking a second for himself. “you know what happened to alecta.” he started, already feeling the ache in his chest. “and she suffered from mental illness for years, that part was always true.” he picked at a thread on the rip in his jeans, willing himself to keep it together. “when we were sixteen, she found out she was pregnant, and she decided to keep it. and i was scared, penelope. i was terrified of it, but she made that choice and i had to be okay with that.” he explained, glancing her way. “but she had a miscarriage, and it broke her. she just wasn’t the same after that. and two months later, it was... she was just gone.”

“so,” ambrose let out a sigh as he sat down at the other end of the couch to penelope, hands interlocking as he rested his forearms on his thighs. there were memories swirling in his mind that he’d long buried, and he didn’t know how he was going to approach any of this. “you deserve to know this, and i really should’ve told you sooner, but it’s hard to talk about. i haven’t ever talked about it, actually.”

“yes, i had to win. rin was giving out candy bags, you think i’ll say no to winning?” he chuckled, waving the bag he’d just won. “don’t be so dramatic, i could’ve pulled you into something worse.”

“you’re a grown man.” ambrose replied, looking unimpressed by the bag. only seconds later, he was reaching for it, grabbing it from riley. “nothing worse, i’m trying to behave tonight.” he took one bit of candy from the bag, then handing it back to him.

riley cleared his throat multiple times, looking dramatic as he usually did. “think i just ruined my voice for tonight?” he asked the person next to him, his voice already sounding pretty scratchy after his karaoke battle against yoongi. “i think i overdid it. but his ass is pretty competitive, i had to pull all the stops.”

“i’m just mad that you dragged me into it.” ambrose huffed, out of breath and a little sweaty. “did you have to pick something so fast paced? your competitive ass calling on my ride or die friendship with you is going to actually kill me someday.”

did you think you would date again after your previous girlfriend?

“when it first happened, i didn’t even think about it. i couldn’t. after a few months, i knew it would probably happen, i just wasn’t ready. i would feel guilty for even thinking it, at first, but i know i shouldn’t now. it was about two years later when i actually went on a date, but i still felt unsure about it.”
