@pcrphyrias
i know this is a hot take for writeblr but you should be able to start, pause, discontinue, and abandon WIPs without feeling guilty.
When writing emotionally reserved characters…
This list is obviously subjective. There is no “right” or “wrong”, but as an emotionally reserved person, these are some things I thought were worth mentioning! You don’t have to do everything on this list, it’s simply here for inspiration/a bit of help.
Show your character’s struggles with holding in emotions. Just because your character won’t let themself go in public, doesn’t mean they don’t struggle holding everything in.
Find a motive. Pride and/or consideration for those around them can make emotionally reserved people hold back more than would be considered good for them. There are other reasons too. Think of something, perhaps the initial cause and the reason now are different, but try to give them a reason.
Show side-effects. Everything you bottle up shows itself in another way, whether it’s physical or mental. This can be long- and short-term, depending on the severity of the emotions.
Give them coping mechanisms. Everyone who wishes not to show certain emotions has a trick or two to keep themselves in check. Taking a sip of water, not looking people in the eyes, clenching their fists, breathing just a bit too deeply/shallow. There are a few lists of these online, I believe.
Write subconscious signs that they give off, which their close friends or family might pick up on. Just because these characters want to keep their emotions to themselves, doesn’t mean they don’t give off signs. Some manage to keep said signs well hidden from those closest to them, but it’s more common for their environment to pick up on something at the very least.
Perhaps make some characters perceive your OC as unable to feel certain emotions. There’s bound to be at least one person in their environment who thinks the character just doesn’t feel some emotions.
Convey their confusion/bewilderment when they’re confronted with others’ emotions. Most of the time, it’s difficult for an emotionally reserved person to understand why on earth someone else can’t keep themself under control.
Pick one main emotion to hide. This is the one they’re most uncomfortable showing, one they decide they’d rather go through physical and emotional pain than showing. Depending on whether their keeping to themself has to do with pride, your character might not even want to let this emotion surface when they’re alone. Generally these are the “weakest” emotions: sadness, fear, etc.
Let them cover up one emotion with another when they really can’t keep a straight face anymore. Generally speaking, anger is an amazing cover-up for a variety of emotions. Your voice is less likely to break when you raise it, that upset look on your face will suddenly make sense, and the fact that fear made you shaky suddenly seems to correlate with anger instead.
Learn the difference between suppression and repression. They’re two very different words often used as synonyms. I’m not a professional, so I don’t think I can explain it properly, but there are some great articles online!
Try to steer clear of making them unsympathetic. Not every reserved person is unsympathetic, but they can come off as such because they just have no idea on how to deal with emotions or show them to the outside world. Focusing on their internal conflicts, both with what caused them to feel strongly about something and keeping it concealed.
On that note: you don’t have to make them cold-hearted and stoic. Not every emotionally reserved person is the same. In fact, depending on the emotions they wish to keep private, they might be very cheerful and empathetic friends.
Do not, and I repeat do not, let them “give in” to their emotions the moment they’ve found their true love. This isn’t realistic. It’s laughable to any emotionally reserved person. Finding someone they’re really comfortable around is great, and your character might be able to let go later on, but things like that take time to develop. A month won’t suffice; a few years are more likely to be realistic.
Not everyone who is emotionally reserved has some kind of trauma that caused it. Yes, some people become quite guarded after experiencing a trauma of some sort, but other people just are the way they are. No specific reason, no tragedies, they are just who they are. There’s always our society to rely on for steering them in the “right” direction.
Keep in mind that everyone is different. I write from my own experience, as would anyone else, so my post is by no means complete. Try to find different views on the topic – from real people instead of scientific articles.

How to represent epilepsy in media: A few facts about epileptics that could help artists create more accurate representation of those with the disorder.
The incorrect image of public seizures and seizure triggers: That one seizure and its triggers.
The seizure shown in the media where someone just drops and starts to shake is one of many different types of seizures classified by the part of the brain affected. The symptoms are seriously diverse. My seizure, as described by my husband, consists of me freezing then slowly rocking back and forth and twitching my fingers. I can hear what is going on around me but I can’t speak. I once knew a guy whose seizure was basically a sudden blackout while he is still standing followed by what looks like sleepwalking that almost got him run over by a bus because he keeps moving without seeing the world around him. The shaking on the ground thing, or tonic-clonic seizures, are not the majority.
All the different triggers you hear about do not pertain to everyone. Strobe lighting, flickering lights, bright lights, and certain television or video game colors are all valid triggers but everyone has different triggers. None of those actually bother me and I’ve known people who are triggered by some of those and not others. Again, this is all incredibly more diverse than people think.
The mythically small presence of epileptics in society
Epilepsy is an invisible disability that can develop in any person at any age. People don’t just get bashed in the head and get epilepsy. It’s usually just a natural part of someone’s life.
1 out of 26 people will develop epilepsy. It is not some rare disorder.
You can be an epileptic and not have seizures. Some people have completely normal although medicated lives.
Important First Aid Tips:
Do not immediately call an ambulance. Most seizures for epileptics last a few minutes then, after a bit of dizziness, they move on with their day. If someone wakes up from a seizure and finds out you called an ambulance, they will be extremely upset because guess what, at least in the U.S., they will have to pay for that ambulance which can cost hundreds of dollars. Crazy, right? Please just wait and make sure it’s not serious before freaking out and calling 911. I know watching a seizure is scary but please keep calm because panic only makes things worse. We appreciate you caring but the panic and jumping to conclusions makes things so much worse for us.
Do not, I repeat, DO NOT PUT SOMETHING IN THEIR MOUTH. No one swallows their tongue. It’s a myth and whoever came up with the wallet thing needs a slap. When I see someone stuff a wallet in an epileptic’s mouth in a show, I want to reach out and choke them.
Seizure First Aid:
Educating the community about this is very important to me. I actually used to travel around with a representative from my local Epilepsy Foundation and give speeches on living with epilepsy. I would love to see better representation in media.
Thank you for your submission, @mrs-raven-writes!! I was starting to think no one would ever submit anything in response to that post!
If anyone else wants to post something, this is the post she’s responding to!
@luca-studies just added this on:
I looked it up and this is what the internet had to say about that:
Thanks for the added information! Don’t apologize, any information is helpful!
The first aid picture (if it is showing for others) does mention timing and calling if it lasts longer than five minutes. It is an extremely helpful checklist that I always keep with me at least on my phone and I think others should know as well.
The waiting to call aspect was about the instinct to immediately call.

So here it is! My first official WIP of this blog! This post is an introduction to the main plot and the world it is set within. I am currently still in writing/planning mode but have high hopes for an actual completed thing in the near future!
Working Title; Where Souls End (not sure how I feel about this but it’s here for now)
Category; New Adult
Genre; High Fantasy // Adventure // Mystery // Romance //
POV; Third Person
Status; Outlining // First Draft
Themes; Afterlife // Identity // Magic // Relationships // Power // Political Intrigue //
Content warnings; Death // Violence // Abuse // Sexual References //
Influences; Plato’s Tripartite Theory of the Soul // Socrates’ Theory of the Immortal Soul // Aristotle’s On the Soul // Hinduism’s Cycle of Reincarnation // (only aspects of these theories have been used to build the world and its rules)
Setting; An afterlife known as The Aether where Souls cannot die of natural causes such as old age or disease, however, they can cause harm to each other. The Aether is a world filled with naturally blue hues spread across varying landscapes and climates, from cobalt deserts to sapphire forests, and crystal seas that seemingly show no end. Souls that once inhabited humans in the Corporeal World are known as Sapien Souls. These Souls are separate entities to the human mind. They are born trapped within the body, imparting their morals and dispositions to mould the humans they inhabit, but the decisions that humans make are theirs alone. These Souls can only sit back and watch the humanity they shaped unfold before them, believing that this is what life was, knowing nothing else. The Soul is reborn within a new human after each death, but the prior memories and knowledge learnt is locked away. Until the Sapien Soul realises that they are not the humans they inhabit, they remain trapped within an eternal cycle of reincarnation. Once the Soul recognises this, they will transcend from the Corporeal World once their final human dies. Awakening in The Aether with every memory and skill suddenly remembered from past lives. In The Aether, Souls feel first-hand the very emotions and sensations that were kept from them. The warmth of touch, a burn of desire, the ecstasy of taste. Although, a Sapien Soul lead by their desires is bound to corrupt themselves, seeking satisfaction above true pleasure, pleasing their appetency before their mind.
Synopsis; Mavis has just transcended to The Aether, but somewhere along the line, something went wrong. Every memory, each piece of knowledge she learnt during her time on Earth, it’s all still locked away. With no skills or knowledge, she struggles to fit into a society that works selflessly to sustain one another. She is guided by Rune, a human historian and archivist, who promised to help her regain what knowledge she once had and understand why she lost them in the first place. Though, since Mavis’ arrival, a world that has known peace for almost a millennia begins to get suspicious as Sapiens start to vanish in the night without warning. She suddenly finds herself to be a key witness after seeing what really happens when these Souls disappear, uncovering a plot that threatens the existence of every Soul in the Aether.
I’ll be posting more about Mavis and some other character introductions soon along with more details about the world as I build it!

Fantasy Wardrobe: Popular Men's Fashion of History
Fashion is one of my favourite worldbuilding components and choosing which way I want characters to look, is one part of research that is more fun than work. The use of different styles give each culture a defined feel and could act as a symbol of all kinds of lands in your WIP. Since it is your WIP, you can play with different elements of the garments and pay fast and loose with the styles.
Shirt
The shirt is the key to every other item of clothing on this list. The shirt was always worn under everything. It was often made of linen and worn by all classes. The shirt was often embroidered with blackwork and was sometimes even able to peak out from slashings in the garment over it. Shirts were seen as an intimate item of clothing. You should hear about the chaos that occurred when Anne Boleyn found out that Katherine of Aragon was still sewing Henry VIII's shirts.
Tunic
The tunic was worn by all classes. The tunic could be sleeveless or with sleeves. Tunics usually reached the knee or mid thigh when worn in hot climates and could be cut to the hip like a regular shirt today. They were belted at the waist.
Doublet
The doublet was a jacket worn over a man's undershirt. The doublet was usually laced or buttoned up at the front, reaching from the neck of the wearer to the hip of the waist. The doublet was often padded in order to keep the wearer warm.
Jerkin
The jerkin is a tight fitted jacket worn again over the shirt that is buttoned or laced at the front. The jerkin could be worn with or without sleeves. Leather was a popular material for these to be made and was worn by both classes.
Breeches
Are pants. Most breeches stopped at the knee though some reached the ankle, similar to today's trousers. Breeches could be in laced at the front and were worn by every class of men.
Hose
These were a style of pants that usually ended above the knee. Hose were often worn with a codpiece, a rather bold fashion statement for men. Hose would have also been worn with stockings held up by garters. Hose might be padded at the things to add some flare to the look.
Overgown
The overgown is rather like a great loose jacket worn over the doublet or jerkin. It was usually sewn with fur for warmth and made of contrasting fabric than what lay underneath.
Justacorps
This is the classic knee-length coat worn by men 18th century. Men would wear this over a waistcoat and shirt. This was a popular fashion for highborn men. It does still look fine.
Kaftan/ Caftan/Boubou
This is a large robe that is pulled on over the head with long sleeves. It can have a v-neck or round neck. They are usually heavily embroidered.
Achkan/Sherwani
This is the long coat worn by Indian men. It is usually buttoned up at the front, reaches just below the knees and is long sleeved.
