Who are the Orishas? (Versión en Español)
The Yoruba religion isn’t a polytheistic religion, although the Orishas are referred as Gods sometimes, there is only one supreme deity in our religion. God has the representations as the catholic religion does.
Olodumare, the creator of all things and father to us all. Olorun, the manifestation of God visible to us as the sun, the owner of the heavens. Olofi, the representation of god that communicates directly with the Orishas, teaching them what humans must know.
The Orishas are intermediaries between the humans and God also watch over us to report our actions to Olofi. Also they use their ‘aché’, or spiritual energy gave to them by Olofi, to maintain harmony in the world.
In the past, most of Orishas were humans and gained their status after death, similar to the Catholic saints.
The word Orisha means “head guardians” as they’re the ones watching us for Olofi. We can worship them, but they are never placed above Olodumare.
As previously told, each one of Olodumare’s eldest children are imbued with aché, with this spiritual power they guard the earth, watch over human affairs and the nature. They’re represented with colors, numbers and in occasions with the image of a Catholic Saint.
Here is a list of some of the Orishas and a little information about them:
Eleguá Also known as Elegguá, Elewá and Elegbá. In catholic religion he’s represented by Saint Anthony. Colors: Red and black Number: 3 and 21 Eleguá is the first and one of the most important Orisha in Santeria. He is the owner of all paths and the witness of fate. He’s often perceived as a trickster who tests our integrity.
Ogún Also known of Oggún. In catholic religion he’s represented by Saint Peter. Colors: Green and black Number: 3 Ogún is a mighty warrior, the divine blacksmith and the hardest working Orisha of them all. He is often perceived as a powerful muscular man wearing a skirt made of palm fiber and he carries a machete.
Ochosi Also known as Ochossi, Oshoshi. Represented by Saint Norbert. Colors: Blue and amber Number: 3, 7 Ochosi is the divine hunter whose arrow never misses its mark. He is the force of blind justice that is applied equally to all. He is best friends with Eleguá and Ogún and is often found hunting with them.
Obatalá Represented by Virgen de las Mercedes Colors: White Number: 8 He is the eldest of the Orishas, the owner of white cloth, the king of peace and logic. He encourages us to use diplomacy and reason when acting and is often the Orisha who mediates disputes between the others.
Ochún Also known as Oshún, and represented by Our Lady of Carida Del Cobre. Colors: Yellow and amber Number: 5 Ochún is the Orisha of love and beauty. She is a generous and loving mother, but she can also quickly turn bitter if she is wronged. She is the youngest of the orishas and is depicted as a flirtatious, mixed-race woman dressed in yellow, gazing in a mirror.
Changó Also known as Shango, Sango and Shangs. Represented by Saint Barbara. Colors: Red and white Number: 6 Changó is the king of the religion of and was once the fourth king of the city of Oyó in Yoruba land before he was deified and became an Orisha. He is the Orisha of lightning, thunder and fire, the owner of the sacred batá drums, the power of passion and virility. Changó is a ladies’ man and a charmer.
Yemayá Also known as Yemoja and represented by Our Lady of Regla. Colors: Blue and clear Number: 7 Yemayá is the mother of all living things, the queen of heaven, earth and all waters. She resides in the ocean and is the mother of many of the other Orishas. In addition to being a loving mother she is a fierce protectress. She can fight with a machete or a scimitar and bathe in the blood of her enemies.

YORUBA THEOLOGY
The Yoruba theology resides mainly in the believe of a one God, who created everything that exists. From Him came several energies who take care of every detail of the Universe, those are called by the Yoruban believers, Irunmole and Orishas. In the Yoruba system of belief, before you’re born you have already decided what is going to happen with your life, this happens through Ori, which decide what is going to be the main objective in the new life you’re begining. Using the different energies of the Universe, we can achieve easily the needed balance to get to that final objective pre defined by ourselves, meaning living life in balance, with health, happiness and wealth. Once you come to the earthly plane, your body is formed by three elements: Emí (spirit), Orí (soul) and Ará (body). The Emí and the Orí live inside the Ará but separated. Orí has the knowledge and the wisdom of passed lifes, it keeps closed to ones consciousness until death. Emí allows us to our internal dialogue, it stores memories from this encarnation, and it goes aside from our counsciousness when we incorporate the Orisha, then he goes out the Ará. When we die, Emí and Orí becomes one and leave the Ará who will transform in a dead body (Okú). Once they’re only one energy they’ll wait for the fate that will come to them, meaning returning to Aiyé transformed in an spirit (eggun) and wait for the reincarnation (Atúnwá), or if Aragbá Orún (Way to Orún), to get to the Ará Orún state (habitant of the Orún) with the Orishas. These state is only achieved after several reincarnations, until ones Emí has a state pure enough to become an habitant of Orún. Every dweller of Aiyé, according to their behaviour in life can be considered as an omoluabí or an ajogun. Those who broked the laws and had a despicable behaviour during life, become ajogun or dark spirits, among those are: Iku: The Death. King of the Ajogun. Arun: The disease. Ofo: The greed. Epe: The hatress. Ewon: The selfishness. Egba: The loneliness. The omoluabí are those that were rightous in the life, but anyway commited some mistakes, they’re considered kind spirits and can be adored as family ancestors.
PATAKI OF ELEGUA
Olofi at one time was greatly ill and depressed of the situations among the universe. He grew tired and frail since he was doing so much still creating life, giving Orishas Ache and so on. The Orishas were summoned to see if they could do anything for the great king and cure him of his dilemma. The Orishas gathered in the great hall where Olofi slumped in his throne, soon they began conversing with each other on methods for curing him.
Obatala went first and tried to clean him with his white cloth with no effect. Orula prepared a tonic to drink and Olofi remained the same, Ozain tried an herbal rub and the great king remained the same. Every Orisha tried and they were unsuccessful.
Elegua walked amongst the Orishas but since he was a child the Orishas out stood him. He shrugged on Yemaya’s skirt to get her attention and asked if he could try, Yemaya told him to behave and be quiet. He went to Oya and with the look she gave him, he ran to the legs of the others. He shrugged Aggayu’s pants and Aggayu told him his presence was not needed, for him to go play outside since this was a matter for the elders. Elegua soon grew upset.
He ran to Obatala and asked him if he could try. Obatala told him that his Ache had no match to heal Olofi. He went on to tell Elegua that all the other Orishas are trying their best to do what they can for the great king. Elegua looked at Obatala and told him he should be given a chance as he is a Orisha as well. Obatala raised his staff and ordered silence. He told them to step aside and let Elegua try and revive Olofi, all the Orishas whimpered under their breath not to make Obatala hear them as he is a father figure and the eldest.
Elegua walked slowly to Olofi’s throne and looked at him from head to toe. Elegua reached into his nap sack and pulled out three herbs. He was always roaming the woods and he has seen Ozain work with the different herbs of the forest. With the herbs he picked up he grabbed a leaf from each branch and placed it into the mouth of Olofi. Now all the Orishas were seeing this child on the lap of Olofi and how long would Obatala make this mockery last.
Elegua grabs the mouth of Olofi and manually moves it so that he can chew and swallow. After he swallowed the herbs, Elegua takes out a feather and passes it over the body of Olofi. After he is done, he walks off from the throne and Obatala has grief in his eyes as Olofi remained the same.
All the Orishas began to talk about how Elegua’s tactics were unforgivable and he should be reprimanded for it. A slight glow began to rise from Olofi’s chest and it began getting brighter, brighter until the great king stood mighty tall on his throne with light so powerful all Orishas fell to their feet.
Olofi called to Elegua and thanked him for what he had done. He asked how had he done it and Elegua responded that he studied every part of the forest and its secrets. He has seen how every Orisha worked differently and he went on telling Olofi that none of the Orishas would let him try but Obatala. Olofi smiled and told Elegua that from this day he would have virtue of opening all gates and doors and pathways. He gave Elegua a gold key that unlocked Olofi’s home and every door in the universe. He also blessed his feather, telling him with this feather he would be able to walk forward and backwards through time, through light and dark, through evil and good.
Olofi then proclaimed that Elegua would be his personal messenger and that they must always count on him in all they do. If Elegua wasn’t pleased, then their work and messages would not reach the castle. He then said that Elegua must be the first to eat at every ceremony and the first to be prayed to. With all this said, Olofi touched his head and an inner light glowed from Elegua.
As a kid at heart, he faced the court of Orishas and stuck out his tongue laughing. Olofi smiled at him and sent him on his way to maintain order in the crossroads of humanity and the Orishas.
