The silence is peaceful. From where she’s perched, she can hear owls, crickets, and the rustling of leaves. But the rest of the world is sleeping and she’s only just started to appreciate the tranquility in that. The tranquility of being alone; when the weight of downturned mouths and pitying eyes is non-existent. Some of them have the mind to stay quiet, Others… Others ask her how she’s doing, even if they’ve never bothered to ask before. Or worse, they say that they’re sorry for what happened to her, though they never elaborate on which part they’re talking about. It’s to the point where she can hear the empty apologies even when they remain unspoken. It’s to the point where she’s turned her phone on silent, ignored every single one of her friends’ attempts to hang out, and spent the majority of her time sleeping on the couch or sitting on the roof, mulling over how she’s meant to return to school now that everyone knows. Now that everyone’s sorry for “what happened” to her.
When she hears the creak of someone climbing out of the window behind her, she doesn’t even bother trying to hide the joint. Instead, she takes another hit and tucks her arm behind her head, holding it up in the wide empty space beside her as a silent offering. She hates her own voice with a passion. Even to her own ears, every word that leaves her mouth sounds so fucking pathetic.
Her car comes to a skittering halt, tires scrapping precariously over the loose dirt of their driveway from her sudden stop at honestly reckless speeds. And she’s a sight when she leaps from the car, her hair wild and disheveled, face flushed and looking nothing like the pristine image she was so careful to manage at school. Her features were twisted into a furious scowl that sent Foof meandering inside, tail tucked between his legs before she’d even opened her mouth. But the rage finds its target, perched high up on the roof. ❝You whore. What the fuck do you even have one of these for?❞ Jess holds up her slick phone like she might attempt to toss it at Mattie, the sharp edges of the casing flicking for just a moment in the dim porch light. Her voice was piercing, twinging on the edge of panic.
Struggling slightly in the muddy driveway, Jess slammed the door of her car with a resounding thump that echoed off into the surrounding trees. But nothing demonstrated her fury more than the stiff walk that she employed the entire walk to just under where Mattie sat. ❝Well? Why didn’t you answer my texts?I’ve been fucking looking for you everywhere.❞ And she had. Storming like a bat out of hell through the streets of their small town, pausing in all their usual haunts for a chance sighting of a small brunette. The longer it took, and the longer Mattie had gone without responding, well...
❝I-- I was worried.❞ Finally, her voice cracked, the steam seeming to die from her minor tantrum now that she’d actually found the source of her concern, whole and well. Physically, anyways. ❝Jesus. This is fucking stupid. Can you just come down so I can talk to you?❞
❝ – Goddamnit.❞ A pile of miscellaneous items – books, trophies, birthday cards – burst from the bottom of the large box she’s carrying onto the concrete before her feet. It feels like the last straw. Instead of picking it all back up and continuing she sits on the curb next to them, pulls a cigarette out of her jacket pocket and lights it. Her eyes water, partially from the smoke and partially from exhaustion, and she wipes any stray, fallen tears from her eyes before they land on her jeans.
It’s the cigarette that draws her attention first, her nose already wrinkled and her lips perfectly poised, ready with a snarky comment as she whips around to deliver. It was one thing to light up completely smashed at some party, and another thing to go at it right here in the middle of the street where she had to smell it. Or so she tells herself. But at the sight of a pretty girl’s tears, the harsh words die on her tongue and Jess takes a few determined steps to hover the rather sad looking figure. ❝Your boyfriend kick you out or something?❞ Her tone is as sympathetic as she is capable and her hand finds her hip as she glances over the jumbled mess of junk. That is, until recognition dawns hard and fast. ❝Wait-- Claire? Claire Elkland? --The fuck?❞

Jeff wishes he had three hands: two to type, and one to stuff the sandwich he bought from the café counter in his mouth. He’s in the middle of a timed homework assignment, so quickly munches a bite of his turkey club and pounds the computer keys to enter in his assignment.
The problem is almost solved when Erika sends him a video message of herself face swapping with Iron Man, and he chokes on the bite of food he was about to swallow. Spluttering and coughing, he frantically reaches for the water next to him.
As he’s slurping the water down he feels concerned eyes watching. He looks up and says hoarsely, ❝Turkey hunk in the throat. Happens more often than you’d know.❞
---Jess holds her sugary coffee and croissant bag delicately with lithe fingers in one hand and her phone in the other. Between the harsh flicks of her messy (yet oddly perfect) ponytail and her staggering height, she is a presence anywhere. Even in a ridiculously crowded cafe with nearly every table taken. Pausing to tap out some message to God awful Tara who is still managing to whine about her punishment since her mum’s stupid wine cabinet was broken into, when she’s distracted by some life-threatening splutters for air. At least it must be life-threatening if they’re going to insist on coughing on her. She glances over to find a vaguely, vaguely familiar boy, laptop open and struggling with his sandwich, and with perhaps the last seat in the whole cafe left. ❝Gross.❞ She bites out, nose crinkled in distaste and her eyes narrowing ever so slightly. But without any pretense or another word she draws out the chair and takes a seat across from him. Her long legs crossed at the knee and the straw of her drink already on its way to her lips. ❝Do you really want to admit to frequently choking on things?❞ she asks without looking up, finishing up her message and pressing send before taking a slow draw on her drink's straw.
