CHEERLEADER - ST. VINCENT
I’ve had good timesWith some bad guysI’ve told whole liesWith a half smile
—
I’ve played dumbWhen I knew betterTried so hardJust to be clever
“… A diploid cell is transformed during meiosis, what does it create?”
“--...a hot mess.”
“What? You mean not everyone knows that? I’m baffled.” Nate teased. “I don’t know. Some people, or so I’ve heard.”
“I don’t really pay attention to the world around me.” Pearl drawled. “More fool them, I suppose.”
“What do you mean it’s socially unacceptable to be drunk in the middle of the day? If you had to go through the internship meeting that I just did, you’d be fucking drunk too.”
Spinning around while clutching a glass bottle of tequila, Pearl flew off into a dizzied spiral on the campus green. Once she smacked back into Caj, the frowning blonde glanced up through widening eyes at him. “Where the fuck did Maxipad go?”
“I’m not trying to hit you with comebacks, I’m just wondering why you’re still here if I’m so boring.”
“You're the one interrupting my epiphany.”
“Somehow that hasn’t stopped you from talking.”
“Gotta love those kindergarten comebacks.”
Snorting, Jason shook his head and leaned back in his seat. “I wouldn’t be surprised if she became a sister and a mother at the same time.” Grey-blue eyes lifted and he watched as the sunlight reflected off her hair, tiny blonde flyaways glowing white. “You have good hair,” he said, the words mumbled and nonchalant as he reached for his drink.
“You’re fucking weird.” A smile contradicted the frown now set in motion but Pearl didn’t bat it off with her usual tenacity, she’d always been a hot mess of flaws and contradictions. “You know everyone’s planning on fucking around in the Hampton’s over summer?” She asked, raising her eyebrows with a playful spark. “Imagine the chaos.”
“What kind of question is that?” Reid stared up at the blonde, his brow furrowed as he scoffed at her query. He knew Pearl had never been one to be concerned with the feelings of others and she rarely ever spoke to him about his feelings on anything, even if it was a meaningless topic, so it came as a surprised when she asked him how he was feeling. “We don’t talk about our feelings together, Pearl.” The sincerity in her voice unnerved him to no end, it always had, and he continued to peer up at her. “It’s not something we do.”
“You’re right. Silly me.” Her insides were aching with sincerity and it was splashed out against the watermelon green of her irises when she spoke. Tender and soft, like fingers on silk. Her fingertips drummed against the exposed flesh of her thigh while she stared at Reid like something compelled her too. Pushing off the wall with every last crawling inch of strength, Pearl made her way towards the crumpled silhouette on the couch so she could cup his head in her hands and bring her lips down to his. “So, let’s not talk then.”There was something urgent about the chemical way she kissed him; pressing her body against his so she could straddle her legs either side of him on the couch.
Snow globe | Pearl, Alyssa
ialyssaromana:
Alyssa watched as Pearl cut the lines of cocaine with ease. It looked like muscle memory, something she wasn’t even concentrating on, but Alyssa knew already that the blonde had more than enough experience with it. She hummed quietly to herself, wondering if mixing up Adderall and coke was a bad idea. The thought was fleeting, it didn’t matter now. She was here, and she wasn’t going to pass up an opportunity to get fucked up. Alyssa found her eyes traveling to the bruises on the girl’s neck, not liking the sight of them as her hand reaches up, absently touching her own neck and feeling the ghost of past bruises before Pearl distracted her by changing out the credit card for the dollar bill in her hand.
She watched her inhale a line, tilting her head curiously when she began to speak. Alyssa nodded, knowing what she meant. Anything to quiet the monsters, or turn them into something more bearable. She takes the bill and leans forward, inhaling her first line. The drip in the back of her throat was awful after the fact, but she sniffles a bit and dabs her nose, handing the bill back to Pearl before sitting down on the stool beside her. She listened as she spoke, wanting to interrupt, wanting to tell her not to think about the maybe of the situation. She was alive and that was what mattered.
Alyssa took a breath at her question. She knew all too well what it was like, and she hadn’t had any intention of sharing. But Pearl looked so soft and vulnerable right now that Alyssa found her mouth opening with words she never wanted to speak, no matter how vague. “I felt that way for about three years of my life,” she answers, voice soft as it usually was. She leaned forward, her hands cupping Pearl’s cheeks. “Here is my wisdom,” she starts, completely aware of how much of a pamphlet she was about to sound like, but it had been her thought process after Brett. “You’re alive. You’re breathing, even if you don’t feel it up here,” she says, lightly tapping Pearl’s temple. “You’re fucking alive. It’s gonna be shitty for awhile, and you won’t forget what happened, but as the days pass, the memory loses its hold on you, but only if you let it.”
Staring up into the burning neon lights, tears narrowly escaped Pearl’s Bambi eyes as the words washed over her, only to be scooped up with a tentative pawing motion. “Fuck me.” She whispered against the desperate pouring of emotion as a bid to play it down and cushion it somewhere deeper and darker, where it belonged. Now intent on soaking up another line of bright white powder, Pearl hovered back over the reflective surface and crafted another line so she could throw her head of messy blonde hair backwards and revel in the beautiful numb sensation hitting her insides like a relentless jack hammer. “You brighten my world.” Pearl smiled against the bitter after taste, opening her green eyes to focus on Alyssa while a glint of mischief played over her lips.
“Want to see something fun?” No intention to wait for the answer, Pearl encircled Alyssa’s wrist as she slid her fragile frame from the leather plush of the spiralling stool. Standing upright brought a blissful dizziness. The spinning blonde began to lead Alyssa through the painted magenta wonderland and towards the back passages of the club. Forgotten feathers floated against the freshly bleached flooring, clinging to the tears in Pearl’s jeans as she wandered towards a room with a golden star stuck to it like an ambitious play at Hollywood. “You can be anything here, you know? You’re a chameleon of lust and chaos.” Finally slacking on Alyssa’s thumping pulse point, Pearl opened the door as though exposing a forgotten Atlantis, revealing a back stage, dress up room.
“We could invite Wyatt, if he wouldn’t ask questions--...” Her voice purred against the vicious heartbeats pounding on her eardrums. Naturally, Pearl never waited long, she twirled across the zebra rugs covering the black tiles and tended to a rack displaying a variety of scantily clad outfits. “-- you know, put on a show.” She spoke with a childish aura, plucking an ensemble off the rail so she could hold it against herself and throw out an old starlet pose like she were modelling it. Now examining the piece at question, Pearl gestured to Alyssa with a Cheshire cat grin. “You should definitely try this shit on.” Like the idea was gold, Pearl ushered towards Alyssa while the white lightning lifted her where she needed to be. “Seriously.”
Let’s go on an adventure.
“No offence, Flo but your idea of an adventure is taking a trip to Walmart.”
“Does it have anything to do with breeding World of Warcraft fans and horses, to make centaurs? Because that’s what I was thinking.”
“Seeming as I have no idea as to what the fuck you’re talking about, I’m going to say no.”
“Of course I do. That’s probably the only thing that I’ve ever give a shit about. My kid is the most important thing that I’ve done up until this point,” he shrugged as he glanced over at her. “I don’t give a shit about what the zine has to say about it.”
“You’re like a toasty cinnamon bun, Caj.” Pearl’s eyes glistened against the bore of sunlight as she finished off the cigarette and crossed her legs over. “Too good for all of us.”
“Oh! You mean– No! No, I don’t!” Tessa replied, her cheeks flushing a deep shade of red as she her eyes scanned to see if anyone was watching, Pearl’s bluntness making her nervous. Tessa turned, running her index finger along the dust covers of Shakespeare’s complete works as she sashayed along the aisle behind the blonde, a wistful sigh slipping through her parting lips. “I find that hard to believe. Wyatt’s… I don’t know, different. He’s kind. He’s sweet. He treats me like I’m an actual person, y’know? You’ve got him wrong, Pearl. Don’t let that dastardly zine distort your perceptions of people. I pay absolutely no attention to it – if I read it, it’d only keep me down.” At Pearl’s last comment, the brunette found her iridescent eyes rolling once more, her rose petal lips pursing into a pout. “I’ve just never felt the urge.”
Pausing from browsing completely, Pearl span back to face Tessa. An audible sigh escaped her lips which only seemed to further anger the elderly librarian down the aisle. “Stop. Just stop. Okay.” Her tone was exhausted with frustration but still she ventured on. “One -- he’s not different, he’s a boy. Two -- I don’t get people wrong.” She tapped against her temple with her two index fingers. “It’s my thing. I’m people clever. I’m also Wyatt clever. The only thing separating him from the other fuckboys around here is the fact that he gives a better orgasm.” Tending the books with an idle hand, Pearl slid out a copy of Midsummer’s Night Dream with a knowing smile. “Welcome to the club.”
“Please sir, can I have some crack,” he said, before shaking his head. “I don’t think the Lord would settle for crack.” Max laughed bitterly, rolling his eyes as he began to explain. “Apparently she thinks it’s murder or something. That baby is an accident, there’s no doubt about it. Our parents are married. It just doesn’t work. Anyway, I fucking hate kids.”
“Gross, pro life.” She spoke through imitated gagging sounds. “Fuck.” The wind carried Pearl’s voice as it changed direction, blowing leaves against her muddied heels as she picked at straying branches. “What if I beat her baby maker with these twigs? Nature it out.” She grinned, wriggling the array of bark in Max’s direction until his face was tickled with it.
