So long story short umm…….i had an idea for a cliche high school au where Dev and Lu are the Scene and Emo kids of the school…….and this was the result.
Honestly being an elder goth, it’s been a lot of fun revisiting some of these old trends and styles I remember from middle school. Plus, I mean the colors and concept are just fun. Ridiculous, but soooooooooo fun 🤣🩷🖤💚 a nice silly breather between bigger projects. Also threw in some of my sketches and initial concept for their designs!
So today I learned about the healing powers of drawing my ship like I’m doodling in my middle school notebook again 🍓🍵💖💚
What is Luci's relationship with the Devil like in the Cuphead game? Are there any differences?
Hmmm……..I mean the only difference I can really think of is I can see Lu maybe being a bit more of an active accomplice in Devil’s casino business. Like overseeing hospitality so she can feed on the guests while they sleep, or running/installing a casino chapel. I think she would have fun with that! 💒🍷🎰
What I find most interesting about Luci is the fact that she can change her gender whenever she wants. I think that's a really cool power, and I found it even more intriguing when I saw that she's gender fluid. (Along with Pansexual ) In other words, I often imagine her changing from one day to the next as a man and then as a woman the next, lol.
Honestly, for me, your OC is one of the most creative and interesting I've ever seen in the Cuphead community!

Fun fact about why that is: so Luci’s fluidity actually has to do with leech biology! Leeches are hermaphroditic by nature, so the way I decided to depict that in Luci was by having her be very fluid with her gender expression and biology! So yea like you said, if Luci wants to be a man one day and a woman the next, she absolutely can, along with anything in between. I had a lot of fun researching leeches actually when I was first developing her 🖤💚 I really don’t draw Lu’s male form enough tho, I need to fix that.

You do the Cuphead artstyle so well! I’ve gotta ask, do you have any tips for someone learning to replicate/create their own version of it? I’d like to make my own Self-Insert Booklynn fit in with the other characters artstyle-wise.

So when I first got started drawing in the rubber hose style and designing Luci, it was a lot of looking at references, searching up style guides, and of course watching Cuphead and other cartoons from that era (so, sooooo much Betty Boop 🤣). I also did a lot of research into 1930’s fashion to figure out a look that felt time period appropriate.
One thing I would do to both study the style and help Luci blend was I would pick Devil faces I loved and tried to recreate them on her! Really paying attention to shapes and how they would exaggerate them in these characters.
Looking at these guides that were released once the show came out also helped a lot!
Screen edits can also help! They put you in a position where you are directly placing your character next to the set style, so it can cause you to think about things like posing, lighting, design, etc. Lastly, it really just comes down to practice and sticking with it! So long as you do that, improvement is inevitable. I have above some of my very first edits from ‘23 vs. some of my more recent ones to demonstrate both points I mentioned.

Well... I really love your art and your OC x Cannon! But I wanted to ask you something... Does your OC happen to have any personality differences in the game? Since, when the cartoon was released , Many characters undergo significant personality and appearance changes at times. Does she happen to have one too?

I would say much like the other characters, Luci most likely takes a more serious tone in the game rather than her more cartoonish or over-the-top show personality. While in the show I can see her more intimidating demonic aspects being played off with gags to keep the light-hearted tone, in game I imagine they’d be taken as a more serious threat. Her cunning, wit, and manipulative tendencies overpowering her anxiety, whimsy, and curiosity that her show-self displays.
I have yet to sketch what I imagine her game-self would look like but I can’t imagine it would be much different. Her neckpiece would probably switch from a thick choker to more of a ruffled cravat, and probably just one set of buttons rather than the three. Her gloves would probably be shorter too but I’m not entirely sure; I’ll have to add it to my to-do list.

Here's the process of it all!!!
Let me tell you when I say I worked my BUTT off on this art piece, I mean it. Over two weeks I spent working on this gosh-darn thing!!! But anywho, it's done and done, and I can finally relax- for now. I really hope all of you enjoy this piece nonetheless! I'd say I did a much better job compared to the piece I've made for the third anniversary (and DEFINITELY the second 😂), though I still love that one, too.
There's about 50 characters or so included here, try to spot your favourites! I just HAD to include a cake for this, it's been on my mind for so long! And hey - perhaps the characters included here are made of fondant, cuz this is SUCH a huge cake for anyone on the isles to bake. Either Saltbaker put in so much dedication (like me, lol) into making the cake leviathan, or it was enlarged with the help of Old Scratch. 🤭
BUT ANYWAY!!! I find it hard to believe that this show's been around for four whole years. I'll never forget the times when I did the Countdown and got to see some clips of the show early! Those were surely the days. I absolutely adore this show with all my heart, as well as the amazing people I've met thanks to our love for it. All who worked on this show must've had a ton of fun, I could tell by reading the entire art book! They should all be truly proud of themselves for making this show as a loveletter to new and old fans of the Cuphead game, and even animation as a whole.
That's about all I have to say, there's no way I can tag all of the characters here as it's take forEVER 😭. Still, I quite like what I've said above. I hope it touched you in some way, whether you still watch the show or not. I can only wonder what awaits Studio MDHR and/or Cuphead in the near future - maybe a new game possibly 👀 But if you ask me, I would personally LOVE a new Cuphead novel. They're really fun to read. Rest assured, my heart will EXPLODE if we ever get to see our porcelain pals back on television, or heck, the big screen!!! Anything can happen, but I think I speak for TONS of folks when I say we'll be keeping our hopes high, and then some. Thank you so much, Studio MDHR and everyone else who worked on this show for making it possible. I'll never forget the amount of joy it has brought to me. ❤
