Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for seventeen years, âFantastic Beasts and Where to Find Themâ is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world. The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newtâs story will start in New York, seventy years before Harryâs gets underway.
J.K. Rowling
Warner Bros. announced on 12th September 2013 that J.K. Rowling would be making her screenwriting debut with âFantastic Beasts and Where to Find Themâ, the first in a new film series which is part of their expanded creative partnership with J.K. Rowling. The films will be inspired by Harry Potterâs Hogwarts textbook of the same name, and will feature the bookâs fictitious author, Newt Scamander. âIt all started when Warner Bros. came to me with the suggestion of turning âFantastic Beasts and Where to Find Themâ into a film. I thought it was a fun idea, but the idea of seeing Newt Scamander, the supposed author of âFantastic Beastsâ, realized by another writer was difficult. Having lived for so long in my fictional universe, I feel very protective of it and I already knew a lot about Newt. As hard-core Harry Potter fans will know, I liked him so much that I even married his grandson, Rolf, to one of my favourite characters from the Harry Potter series, Luna Lovegood. As I considered Warnersâ proposal, an idea took shape that I couldnât dislodge. That is how I ended up pitching my own idea for a film to Warner Bros. I particularly want to thank Kevin Tsujihara of Warner Bros. for his support in this project, which would not have happened without him. I always said that I would only revisit the wizarding world if I had an idea that I was really excited about and this is it.â

Previously Unpublished Harry Potter Illustrations by Mary GrandPre
In honor of Jo Rowling and Harryâs birthdays being today, here are some previously unpublished illustrations by the original American cover and chapter art artist, Mary GrandPre. Theyâre so beautiful!! There are a few more, which you can see here.
Iâm obsessed with these. The artwork on the books did such a great job of setting that very uniquely Harry Potter atmosphere of whimsy and vibrance and⌠magic!
Iâm so mad theyâre reissuing the covers, I donât like the new ones at all! Iâm all for change but theyâre literally just worse.

THIS JUST BLOWS MY MIND.
Wuthering Heights, 2011
The writer inside me has reawakened. I can feel her rubbing her eyes as the world floods in anew with colors that didn't exist before.
I don't need sonnets and perfect lines of iambic pentameter to satisfy my tired heart and questioning mind. A simple, fumbled sigh of affection or even the hummingbirds flutter of caring breath would suffice. Anything but silence.
'Missing Hogwarts was like having a constant stomach ache.' Happy September 1st!
My mother tells me that when I meet someone I like, I have to ask them three questions: 1. what are you afraid of? 2. do you like dogs? 3. what do you do when it rains? of those three, she says the first one is the most important. âThey gotta be scared of something, baby. Everybody is. If they arenât afraid of anything, then they donât believe in anything, either.â I met you on a Sunday, right after church. one look and my heart fell into my stomach like a trap door. on our second date, I asked you what you were afraid of. âspiders, mostly. being alone. little children, like, the ones who just learned how to push a kid over on the playground. oh and space. holy shit, space.â I asked you if you liked dogs. âI have three.â I asked you what you do when it rains. âsleep, mostly. sometimes I sit at the window and watch the rain droplets race. I make a shelter out of plastic in my backyard for all the stray animals; leave them food and a place to sleep.â he smiled like he knew. like his mom told him the same thing. âhow about you?â me? Iâm scared of everything. of the hole in the o-zone layer, of the lady next door who never smiles at her dog, and especially of all the secrets the government must be breaking itâs back trying to keep from us. I love dogs so much, you have no idea. I sleep when it rains. I want to tell everyone I love them. I want to find every stray animal and bring them home. I want to wake up in your hair and make you shitty coffee and kiss your neck and draw silly stick figures of us. I never want to ask anyone else these questions ever again.
