I am a very stressed person by nature (I stress about literally EVERYTHING) and I read an interesting article about reducing stress the other day, so I decided I would make a stress page!
The article is on the Huffington Post and it’s called “20 Scientifically Backed Ways to De-Stress Right Now” if anybody is interested.
While language learning apps and websites such as are plentiful online, places to practice are less easy to find! Here’s a few you can try out, none of which are limited to just one or two languages:
Chat
HelloTalk (iOS/Android): an app with 100+ languages that lets you chat with native speakers of your target language from around the world with voice + text. It’s the one most geared towards just conversation!
WeSpeke (iOS/Android): an app and website with probably the largest variety of languages at 130, with text, audio, and video chat.
Conversation Exchange: this one’s a little different, as it not only allows you to get a pen pal and has text, video, and voice, but it also lets you meet up with native speakers in your area to practice!
Speaky (iOS/Android): a web and mobile app which is pretty much social media for language learners! It has 110+ languages and you can make video/audio calls and message from your browser.
HiNative (iOS/Android): not exactly for chatting with people, but instead you can ask native speakers about their culture/language in your target language!
Read
Duolingo Immersion: lets you translate articles from your target language into your native language, or vice versa.
Readlang: read articles, books, and other texts online, with vocab support, and it will create vocab lists and flashcards based on the words you needed help with.

Guys, my GRE Tutor is AMAZING.
I have been meeting with her every week via skype for the past 2 and a half months and she is such a great teacher. Even though I don’t feel prepared enough to take the test on the 25th like I had originally planned, my tutor has seen me improve A LOT since we started meeting. My math skills have improved which is AWESOME.
My tutor boosts my confidence. She teaches in a way that I can understand and she is patient with me when I don’t understand something. She encouraged me to keep studying and to sign up for the GRE when I’m ready. She emphasized that I shouldn’t put so much pressure on myself in terms of a test date. “Just take it when you feel ready.” was what she said to me.
I need to investigate the score ranges for the schools I’m applying to, as well. That way I’ll have something to reference for when I get my scores back. I really don’t want to take this test multiple times. The test alone costs $195. I would also have to drive 2 hours south of where I live to take the test so there’s the cost of gas and other travel expenses to take into consideration.
Anyway.. to make a long story short… I unfortunately won’t be ready to take the GRE on my original test date, but I’m ok with that. I have an awesome tutor and at the rate I’m going I should be ready in about another month or month and a half (which is totally fine by me).
How much is your tutor and how did you find her?
please be gentle with yourself. you’re trying. if it’s taking you longer than you thought to achieve something or get somewhere that’s okay. try not to compare yourself to others too much because not everyone gets to where they need to be right away. you’re alive that’s what matters. keep trying. you’ll get there.

Bunch of white straight dudes mock the need for “safe spaces” but flip their goddamn shit when minorities say stuff like “hey maybe we can be included in stuff like scifi/fantasy stuff”, saying stuff like “I PLAY GAMES/READ COMICS/BOOKS/WATCH MOVIES TO GET AWAY FROM ALL THIS PC CULTURE BULLSHIT, SO INCLUDING WOMEN OR LGBT OR POC IS JUST PUSHING AN AGENDA AND IT’S NOT FAIR TO US”…
… So who exactly is demanding that the entire world be THEIR “safe space” again?
the thing about writing fantasy stories is that language is so based on history that it can be hard to decide how far suspension of disbelief can carry you word-choice wise - what do you call a french braid in a world with no france? can a queen ann neckline be described if there was no queen ann? where do you draw the line? can you use the word platonic if plato never existed? can you name a character chris in a land without christianity? can you even say ‘bungalow’ in a world where there was no indian language for the word to originate from? is there a single word in any language that doesn’t have a story behind it? to be accurate a fantasy story would be written in a fantasy language but who has the time for that
Tolkien had the time apparently
LIsten. Linguistics Georg, who invented over 10,000 conlangs each day, is an outlier and should not have been counted.
So while doing some pirate research for the play I’m writing I stumbled upon one of the most amazing things I’ve ever read. In the 5th century A.D. there was a Scandinavian princess called Alwilda who’s father tried to set her up to marry Alf, the Prince of Denmark. Alwilda wasn’t cool with this so she and some female companions dressed as men, stole a ship, and sailed away. Eventually they met a company of pirates who were in need of a new captain and they were so captivated by her that they elected her as their new leader. Her crew became so infamous that Prince Alf was sent out to stop them. When their ships met he took Alwilda prisoner and she was so impressed by Alf’s skill that she agreed to marry him after all and eventually became the Queen of Denmark.
I stopped caring whether this was factually accurate about halfway through because it’s completely AWESOME.
Medievalist here for triumphant fact-checking: this story is, if not true, at least true according to the history of the Danes (Gesta Danorum) written in the 12th century by Saxo Grammaticus. You can read his account of Alwilda’s story in the original Latin here, or in English translation here. Highlights include:
She exchanged woman’s for man’s attire, and, no longer the most modest of maidens, began the life of a warlike rover. Enrolling in her service many maidens who were of the same mind, she happened to come to a spot where a band of rovers were lamenting the death of their captain, who had been lost in war; they made her their rover captain.
I love the implication that there were lots of Danish maidens just WAITING for the opportunity of a life of piracy…

A hoodoo, also known as a fairy chimney, tent rock, or earth pyramid, is a geological formation consisting of a tall, thin rock that has been eroded by the elements. Their shapes are often so unusual or precarious that people who see them frequently assume that they are man-made.

This incredible 95-year-old transwoman flight instructor found love late in life– only to be denied social security benefits by the government because she’s not cisgender
A beautiful interview with a woman who transitioned in 1976 shows how life for transgender people has changed over the years, although some terrible consequences remain the same.
