Man Injured in Bin Lorry Collision

A man has been taken to hospital following a road traffic collision on Monday morning.

Emergency services were called to Carlops Avenue in Penicuik at 9:25am this morning, Monday, after a 22 year man was hit by a bin lorry.

The Scottish Ambulance service initially attended to the man on the scene, later taking him to hospital for further treatment for serious leg injuries.

Investigations around the circumstances of the incident are ongoing. Carlops Avenue has since reopened.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to contact Police Scotland on the non-emergency number 101.

Nando's Signup to Straiton Retail Park

The worldwide chicken restaurant "Nando's" has revealed that they hope to open in Midlothian's Straiton Retail Park by January 2015.

Further details are not available at this time however it is believed that the chain will neighbour Frankie & Bennies in a, yet to be built, restaurant unit.

With the current spate of construction work scheduled to end in June, work will likely commence on the eatery in Autumn.

Nando's join Nike and CSL Sofas who both intend to open this year, in February and May respectively.

Future developments at the park include a 'fashion terrace' across from Homebase and a department store on recently cleared land beside the former Next store on the lower tier. Construction of both of these is unannounced however it will likely coincide with the construction of Nando's later this year, as planning permission prepares to expire.

The new developments, provided by Peel Holdings, will create the largest Peel owned shopping centre away from England. The Peel Centre Straiton will also be the most diverse of their retail parks offering home and fashion along with entertainment and restaurants. It will be the first retail park to also feature Nando's and as such a creative design will likely be used.

However the much anticipated cinema is still unannounced and it is unknown whether the park's owner will alter department store plans to include a cinema to capture the demand.

Jog Away Those Christmas Dinners

The new year brings a new opportunity for you to get yourself into shape whilst enjoying the countryside in a relaxed atmosphere.

If you've made the resolution to become healthier or fitter this year, you'll be glad to know that help is at hand, as Jogscotland restarts their popular Penicuik Beginners Jogging Group.

Meeting every Monday at 7pm at Ladywood Leisure Centre, short thirty minute sessions promise to offer an alternative way to wash away those festive calories. The first session commences this Monday, 6 January, and Jo Skead, the group's leader, wishes to entice all to the group:

This group is suitable for complete beginners. It doesn’t matter if you’re nervous about starting to exercise, we promise to make it a relaxed, enjoyable experience and build up your confidence in a friendly atmosphere.

JogScotland is a recreational running network which is delivered through local volunteer 'instructors'. Members take part in friendly jogging groups outside or in leisure centres across the whole of the country. Ability is irrelevant as everyone is welcome to take part by either walking, jogging or running. It is up to you; nobody is 'too slow'. Groups will be tailored to your speed from beginners to marathon runners. Beginner sessions include a combination of gentle jogging and walking, with a gentle increase in speed as your confidence grows. It is likely that within twenty weeks of training, you will even be able to run five kilometres

The emphasis at every JogScotland group is on enjoying exercise and supporting one another in a friendly atmosphere.
