can't stop thinking about Armand in the Rothko Chapel
You seem pretty obsessed with me after blocking my account and still talking about me. š I just find it funny that you donāt care about antis or whatever, but you pin me on your blog so your followers can find me and still posting about me days later.
Itās just really funny how I live in your head rent free.
codependency so crazy that the layout frames the two of you as one person
Mizi a girl behind you
The fact that i have to look through someoneās blog to make sure theyāre not romanticising paedophilia and incest before i reblog something from someone I donāt recognise is really fucking upsetting
Can We Talk About the Rainbow-washing of Opposite-sex Ships? (A Confused Question From the Fandom Trenches)
Disclaimer: Toxic āfansā DNI (do not interact). Queerphobes included.
Note: I am still very much figuring out my own identity and where I sit under the queer umbrella. Itās been a process, which is confusing. Though fandom and media have been somewhat safe havens for me while I navigate it, I have a love-hate relationship with them. Iām writing this because I genuinely want to learn and understand. However, thereās a specific trend Iāve been seeing lately thatās making my brain short circuit.
We need to talk about the habit of rainbow-washing opposite-sex dynamics. Specifically, in the context of taking male-female pairs (ones that are clearly written as platonic/familial) and treating them as āromantic queer coding.ā
I want to be cautious here; this is absolutely not about bi/pan/m-spec erasure. A relationship between a man and a woman can be inherently queer if 1 or both parties are bi, pan, a-spec, trans, or anywhere else on the spectrum. Bi/Pan/M-spec people in opposite-sex relationships are valid, queer, and deserve to see their romances treated with respect rather than dismissed as āstraight.ā What I am talking about is the tendency to take a brilliant, deeply bonded, completely non-romantic male-female duo, shoehorning them into a āromanticā relationship, and somehow claiming a victory for ārepresentation.ā From where Iām standing, it feels less like progress and more so a cop-out.
However, I really want to hear from actual LGBTQ+ folks on this. Am I reading this wrong or is this trend doing a disservice to both platonic/familial love and actual queer identity?
Why It Feels Off to Me
As someone trying to figure things out, here is why this specific trend feels fundamentally misguided:
*The Erasure of Found/Chosen Family and Platonic Intimacy; We live in a culture that already struggles to understand that guys and gals can just be friends and that found/chosen family can be as sacred as romance. Slapping a romantic/sexual label on a healthy, affectionate, platonic opposite-sex bond-even when at least 1 character is canonically queer-can reinforce the toxic idea that deep emotional intimacy must always equal romance.
*Aesthetics Over Activism; Forcing a strictly non-romantic opposite-sex pairing into a romantic box regardless of whether they conform to traditional gender roles feels rather lazy (even the āstraight-passingā schtick is counterproductive). It seems like people want to pat themselves on the back for being āprogressiveā without doing the actual work of supporting, creating, and/or championing actual queer romantic arcs or canonically LGBTQ+ characters.
*Platonic Queer/LGBTQ+ Representation Matters; Why can't we celebrate an opposite-sex friendship where a queer character and a straight character (or at least 2 queer characters) have an entirely platonic, ride-or-die bond? Showing an LGBTQ+ person having a deeply supportive, non-romantic relationship with someone of a different gender is incredibly powerful and realistic. Why must we feel the need to romanticize/sexualize it to make it valid?
How does it look from my corner? A man and a woman having a healthy, emotionally vulnerable, non-romantic relationship is subversive. Rebranding such heavily platonic bonds as āromantic queer codingā so that people can ship them without feeling vanilla is akin to using an identity as an aesthetic (erasing the beauty of platonic solidarity in the process).
We Need to Do Better (and I Want to Hear From You)
Maybe Iām overthinking it, but if we want better representation, we have to stop settling for the illusion of it.
If a male-female pair has an incredible, ride-or-die platonic/familial bond, shouldn't we keep it that way? Doesn't that show the world that love exists in massive, beautiful ways outside of sex and romance (even within the queer community)? If we want queer representation (romantic or otherwise), shouldn't we demand and hype up the real thing; actual LGBTQ+ creators and canonically queer romantic arcs? Instead of retroactively romanticizing a solid, platonic/familial opposite-sex dynamic?
For the LGBTQ+ community who has been navigating these spaces longer than me, what are your thoughts? Am I missing any nuances? How do we balance fighting for bi/pan/m-spec visibility in opposite-sex relationships while also protecting and celebrating the importance of strictly platonic/familial bonds? Let's talk about it; we can all do much better.
P.S. While I donāt discount the opposite-sex ships with genuine romantic/sexual chemistry, I canāt stress this enough. We ought to normalize more strictly platonic/familial opposite-sex relationships (real or fictional). Not every relationship of such stripe needs to be romanticized/sexualized (a concept that fandom culture generally struggles with). Donāt give me ābi4biā, āpan4panā, etc. excuses; thereās a time and place for everything.
This post is fucking amazing, itās so true.
mizisua renderss lala
the only light in her eyes being the reflection of a small pink sparkle BECAUSE MIZI IS THE ONLY LIGHT IN HER LIFE
Youāre! mine! chu! <3
ballerina sua!!
Iām too lazy to do a background but thatās because this was for a school assignment last month and I didnāt need a background for that so Iām just going to leave it like this lol
itās not related to anything really ššš I just picked to draw sua for my assignment becauseā¦sua is just so easy to draw idk I love drawing her š„¹š„¹š„¹š„¹
I made this before zombie stage, so once again, this is related to nothing ššš
Mizi's mixed reaction and feelings about her and Sua's dynamic is so interesting cause she for sure feels a sense of guilt when she uses Sua like that or hits her, and then Sua just forgives her all the time without a reprimand, but she can't help indulging in the comfort of being with Sua like this and having the burden taken off her by someone who can take it, Karma Mizi is especially interesting because her self-loathing reaches such high peaks for allowing Sua to do that for her and allowing Sua to placate her all the time to the point it looks like Mizi just used her, and all that stuff. Sooo many instances of this cycle. I like how ZOMST breaks down Sua's self-destructive tendencies and controlling demeanor very clearly because, although ZOMST Mizi eventually gives in to Sua's comfort, she's clearly hesitant about conceding to Sua when she's so passive and just wants Mizi to rely on her while insisting that she can embrace everything about Mizi if she just lets her in... and Mizi does... and it doesn't fix them; it's just indulgence in escapism for the moment. When they're adults, it clearly falls apart around them because they can't stay in the same bubble they had when they were kids
Joined the alienstage fandom and I can genuinely say I'm dissapointed
The racism is apparent
The queer favouritism is apparent (as a queen person)
The lack of media literacy is apparent
The romanticism of toxic relationships is apparent
Hyuna gets whitewashed and forced into masculinity. She is feminine. She is not GREY.
Ivantill is not healthy. So many people act like its haha cute gay men but it's really not. Till has love for Mizi. Ivan knows his feelings won't be reciprocated but in the end forces it anyways. If I see one more post where it's considered healthy I'm going to tear my hair out.
Mizi and Sua are not healthy. They aren't yay toxic yuri. They are disgustingly codependant, which is made clearer in zombie stage but was already pretty damn obvious if you knew how to look past surface level.
Luka and Hyuna's relationship is ignored. Frankly I do believe it is because it's heteroromantic.
None of these characters are good people. None of them are bad people. They're just people. Nobody is a cinnamon roll, nobody is healthy, nobody is perfect. They are flawed characters. The only ones who are villainous are the audiences, and even then, aren't we a a part of that, too? It's not black and white.
Edit: Joined a discord server to try and enjoy myself and legit got told to kill myself. Because I was new to the fandom. Touch some fucking grass.
In an ideal universe I wouldn't have to spell this out. And considering I just joined this fandom YESTERDAY and already see this shit? It's really dissapointing.
Thank you @reyrey222ww for showing me your brainspin fandom and I thought you'd like to see me go off.
I'm alive!!!!!!
