whether he’s the recipient or otherwise, satoru isn’t one for ordinary, average gifts — they tend to lose their charm too quickly for his taste, their author forgotten [ … ] & who’s to say being a sorcerer isn’t convenient at times like these? plenty of things could aid one in their everyday struggle against the cursed, but this year he’s thought of something a tad more... special. certainly not something megumi’s teenage heart would burst upon seeing, it’ll come in handy when his life depends on it : a two-hundred year old nodachi that’s spent the last half of its life in the cursed warehouse of the gojō clan, ranked special grade for the potent cursed technique imbued into the blade & sheer number of curses it’s been run through.

he presents it to his ward as one would a console game or a sports item : casually, with a touch of expectation in his body language. there’s no denying he’s thought of something so eccentric for a reason. a gentle request to keep pushing, surpass limits, & see himself grow stronger — without the absolute certainty that the kid was capable of it, satoru wouldn’t consider it. “ haaappy birthday ! it’s a little heavier than what you’re used to, but i believe in you, megumi. ”

by now, megumi is more than used to satoru's eccentricities, including and especially his gift - giving habits ; and yet satoru still manages to catch him off guard with this ⸻ a blade almost as tall as he is.

if he knew satoru any less, he might wonder just how little he cares about what megumi can feel is a special weapon, something that wields both power and history, to hand it off to a stupid teenager like him so nonchalantly. but, megumi does know satoru, and not that he latches onto tradition with any reverence, but he can feel the weight of expectation ⸻ not a burden, it's not any unbearable pressure, even if at the depth of megumi's soul still lies a need to meet those expectations. ( the young fushiguro will say out loud he doesn't care for any adult's approval, but the reality is that he does ⸻ cannot help but fret over their disapproval. )

if he knows anything, it's that satoru wouldn't hand him something like this unless he believed megumi were capable of using it ; that satoru sees a strength within him that he's not always really sure exists.

❝ ... does this mean i'm done with playful cloud ? ❞ there's a contemplative silence that follows as he takes the nodachi being presented to him, examining the blade, the wear in its hilt. ❝ ... i'll ... work hard, and wield it well. ❞

his vision is shrouded in darkness quick ; though it doesn't take long for megumi to deduce what's happened, just as it doesn't take long for satoru to reveal himself as the culprit.

his brow creases with mild irritation, only because he's being forced to ponder how ridiculous he has to look ⸻ though it doesn't occur to him that with his eyes, the clearest windows into his real feelings, covered, satoru only has the pout of his lips and the stiffness of his shoulders to judge his reaction. ( and, that's not always helpful ⸻ because megumi's almost always got his lips pulled and pursed into some kind of pout, and rarely has his body ever known a state of total relaxation. )

he can't see the way satoru is looking at him, the proud father that megumi's always been afraid to accept / always wondered if he deserves, but he can hear him loud and clear, the mischief and the admiration all. if only he were anything but a thorny wildflower that pricks any time one touched it.

instinct urges him to question him, why are you doing this ? but he holds his tongue ; ultimately decides that maybe just this once he will indulge him, but ⸻

❝ i'm not leaving the room with this on, ❞ he warns at last, arms crossing with an almost juvenile but half - hearted petulance. even still, satoru can consider this a win.

how does one measure anger ? in the heartbeat that rattles his ribcage, yuuji thinks. in the count of a pulse that throbs a rhythm against his skin, sore and harried. or perhaps it is measured in the weight of his clenched fists and jagged breaths, broken against ground teeth and the taste of choler upon his tongue.

what's happening in here ?

he feels the ache of something foreign. the barbed edges of a parasite that eats away at all the tender, juicy bits of him and leaves behind a yawning chasm. this wide and empty feeling where he used to be. he feels the ache of something foreign and it is a consequence of his own making, but GOD

what did it feel like when he was whole ?

how does one measure anger ? in the time it takes to understand it is the very first echoes of grief, he supposes. yuuji's fingers rub a trail across his cheekbones, across the brands that mark him ﹕ a vessel, a soldier, a means to an end.

yuuji says he doesn't understand, and that's probably true. megumi doesn't know the full weight of what eats away at him inside, doesn't understand what it's like to have a parasite twisting the very fabric of his being, gnawing at his humanity, fighting for autonomy. he understands fear, anger, grief, even what it's like to not be understood ⸻ but he doesn't understand it like this.

he does imagine it must feel isolating. if he knows anything, it's that he can't let yuuji be alone ( no matter how hard yuuji may try to isolate himself - and he knows that he will try, perhaps is even trying now. )

❝ ⸻ tell me anyway, ❞ he answers, firm, restraining the desperation he feels to reach him just so that he might try to ground him instead. ( he's here, he's here, he's here ; and megumi fushiguro is a stubborn asshole who won't go anywhere. there is nothing yuuji itadori or the parasite can do to change that. )

if yuuji is no longer whole, then megumi will settle in the missing space, complete the emptiness. ( let the sun devour him, he thinks, so long as it never goes cold. )

I THOUGHT ABOUT THIS FOR A LONG TIME i was like man what is popular and unpopular about him because the only time i ever see incorrect opinions about meg it's from people who i'm convinced don't actually go to jjk DSKFJASDKSAD or like those people who willfully do not understand how meg's circumstances would lead him to want to give up...

i have seen (on twt, so i always take it with a grain of salt--) discourse surrounding meg's character arc and talk of his "wasted potential" and i'm like... while i do really wish i'd seen MORE of his technique and its possibilities (and seen it actually being utilized by megumi as opposed to sukuna - which, i've even seen some people talk about the fact that it's more or less shameful that sukuna managed to handle ten shadows more effectively / better than meg, and it's like... how many years has sukuna been around for vs how old is meg and also how many years did he even take being a sorcerer seriously for that matter but ANYWAY--)

anyway while i wish i'd seen more of his technique and had gotten really excited to watch meg's growth and i LOVE thinking about how he'll continue to use his technique in the future (whatever's left of it at this point anyway, and if he isn't just like fuck it i'm gonna go live a normal life now--), and for all of the criticisms that are so valid about the handling of the story overall, i'm kind of like... as unsatisfying as it is, what happens to him in the story seems to be meant to hinder his potential. like, it's meant to be tragic in multiple ways. especially because culling games was SO good he was really locked in that whole time and it was so fun! i've always sort of felt that the sorcerers who die too soon or are hindered from achieving their best in one way or another are meant to be examples of the cog-in-the-machine of it all in jujutsu society.

execution of the matter is probably another thing entirely of course KJDFSDFDSFS but i'm like, well i think i see what's happening here-- and i like to write meg at least sort of introspective (as he always is--) and cognizant of trying evermore to reach that potential.

it hurts, it hurts, it hurts. the abyss feels like a hell of his own making, the same isolation and deafening quiet as when tsumiki first fell ill, when itadori first died, but now he thinks he can hear screaming, can’t tell if they belong to the people out there dying, or if they belong to him.

sometimes, he hears something like a thump or a knock, fists beating on a door, or really fists flying at sukuna ; he thinks that if he abandons enough focus, as he curls in on himself tighter, it might sound less like the banging of an underwater tank he can't escape from and more like fireworks decorating a summer sky, and the numbing cold he feels might be more like the gentle breeze after sunset.

sometimes, he hears his name ⸻ fushiguro ! I’m not giving up on you ! / wake up, fushiguro ! ⸻ and he’s long since lost the ability to rationalize why. his hands, his technique, were taken from him, used against his will to take more from him ⸻ to kill tsumiki, to kill satoru, to take more and more lives, his classmates and friends putting their lives on the line ⸻

Eyes crinkle at Megumi's words, a tinge of affection colouring tone at distant memories surfacing, "Sounds a little like Satoru. He was the same when we were at school. Couldn't have a moment alone without him suddenly bursting into my room or dragging me into town for this or that reason. Made studying almost impossible." Ice creams under the hot summer sun, legs bumping together, frustration slowly tapering off while Satoru chattered about the newest arcade game; for all his initial irritation at being whisked away, it created some of his most cherished moments - he wouldn't trade them for the world.

Suguru's smile widens further when he notes the fondness, and he has to stop himself from ruffling the other's hair. "High praise indeed. I'm happy for you." Genuinely, from the bottom of his heart. Megumi needs this. Friends he can rely on to help him overcome challenges the world gives, to stand strong at his side when things crumble.

He only wishes it happened sooner.

"That depends on what you mean. The party ? Until either Satoru or Itadori pass out. The peace ? That's... hard to say." Itadori's control over Sukuna is remarkable, but, in the teacher's opinion, it's only a matter of time before something goes wrong. "Try not to worry about it for now. You have us if anything happens." None of you are alone - I won't allow harm to come your way. Fingers tap against the bench's armrest, his head lightly tilting. "By the way. I didn't have time to say it earlier, but I'm proud of you. You did the right thing by asking Satoru to help Itadori."

( the thorny vines protecting his heart slowly retracting, a field of flowers bloom in its stead. )

life is almost good, now ; his heart finally beginning to find a soft place to rest. all that remains is to awaken his sister. he still fears feeling prematurely optimistic ; feels like he's toeing the line of unnecessary optimism as it stands, but it's hard to deny that being surrounded by boundless amounts of it makes it hard to suppress the feeling.

❝ yeah. the peace, ❞ he clarifies with a nod, quiets again as suguru speaks. he thinks he understands, both the spoken and unspoken. megumi knows this firsthand: nothing gold can stay. just this once, he wishes that this time will be different. it's a comfort regardless to have the assurance that suguru and satoru are behind them, supporting them ⸻ in megumi's darkest hours, it always was, even if he's not the best at showing it. but, he thinks he can't allow himself to fall complacent regardless. better that he has them if anything happens, but he won't get anywhere if he isn't prepared to face whatever comes himself.

❝ i think so, too. ❞ he tries to sound appreciative in his agreement. i'm happy you think so, is really what he wanted to say, so he tries to elaborate. ❝ but i don't know if i would have been able to make that decision if i hadn't been brought up to question the rules. ❞ another moment of contemplative silence. ❝ ... i want him and kugisaki to live a good and long life. ❞

at minimum, they deserve to outlive someone like him.

nobara slumps back into her chair once class is dismissed. something, something physics, something something numbers; gojo's teachings went in one ear and out the other. their academic work is insignificant to her life as a sorcerer as far as nobara is concerned. she's sure she zoned out halfway through the class instead choosing to focus on anything but the numbers on the chalkboard.

this class, she found herself thinking about how odd it is that gojo-sensei is able to effortless write on the board with his blindfold. it had the same vibe of someone wearing sunglasses indoors - was it really necessary?

"do you think gojo-sensei would let us see his blindfold if we lied and said we needed it for a prop for a play?" she asks suddenly, turning to pointedly face her classmate after their teacher leaves the room. fushiguro knows gojo-sensei most in this class. surely, he would be the best to talk about this. "i want to see how it looks."

oh, megumi is sure that he was once again the only one paying attention in class. he thinks kugisaki and itadori are lucky that his notes are always thorough, precise ⸻ almost shudders to think of the next time he'll be bedridden and forced to rely upon a gross lack thereof. they'd certainly try to provide him with the right notes, he thinks, but he's doubtful they'll actually be useful.

❝ what are you talking about ? ❞ he sighs as kugisaki asks her question, closes his notebook shut and angles himself to face her. ❝ it's a blindfold. it's going to be dark. ❞ usually, he'd leave it at that, but he turns the question again over in his mind. ❝ he'd probably let you see it without the stupid excuse. i assume he has others, but i don't really know. if he doesn't, he probably won't let you have it for long. not long enough to be a fake play prop, anyway. ❞
