OMFG how in the World did we get from that interview to the stuff in TBOB 😭... i was wondering though cus people were being all like "well alex had to tone down LGBT stuff in the show so i wonder what they changed about how bill and ford were shown!" and i knew in my heart that the shift to leaning into the breakup framing Absolutely had to be more recent and retrospective, i can't help but feel like over the years and going into writing the book that his view of how bill felt has been changed a bit in that time

Yeah it’s pretty fascinating! I absolutely don’t think the Bill/Ford relationship was originally conceived of as the pseudo-romantic thing it currently is in canon (hell, if you look at the storyboards for the Last Mabelcorn it seems like canon Ciphord wasn’t even part of the original plans?) so then the question becomes at what point did Hirsch decide to go in that direction? Ford is overall way gayer in TBoB than he is the show too lol - aside from all the Bill/Ford and Ford/Fiddleford stuff, I honestly think the queerest thing about him is his recurring dreams where he’s being grilled on his sexuality. Very 60-something straight man behavior

But anyway, considering the amount of fandom references in the book and website and Hirsch’s general familiarity with the fandom, I wouldn’t be surprised if all the fandom jokes about Bill and Ford as weird toxic exes didn’t get back to him at some point and inform his view on the character, either from a “oh that actually makes a lot of sense” perspective or a “oh this is so much funnier than my initial take on them” one. And just from a practical perspective, if you’re going to write a book where Bill is the main character you’d want him to have a strong emotional connection to another major character, and Ford is basically the only logical option of the existing cast
