After finishing up a shoot and grabbing some tea tonight, we were approached by this woman. She handed us some papers which showed names and some prices. It was a donation list for an organization of deaf people. We reached into our pockets and gave her what we could. This woman, who we soon learned was named Mary, taught us how to introduce ourselves, say our names, greet and thank people in sign language. She even offered to give us a sign language book for free. We shared plenty of laughs and learned that slight incorrect sign language can be completely off (and hilarious.) While downtown, people are constantly asking for money and it can be overwhelming, but spending time with a stranger and learning about their story can be quite rewarding. I encourage fellow Stocktonians to greet one another and don't be so shy.
