“We don’t know exactly what expect, so expect the worst”, was the short and concise debriefing made by the Deputy Director, as short and concise as she tended to be.
Their plane descended into a small village near Alberta, assumed to be last known location of Supergiant. Thanos’ loyal servant didn’t leave any traces herself, but S.H.I.E.L.D. had managed to track down the destruction left on her trail; several dozen people - and towns - drove to insanity by her highly advanced psychic powers. The people from Alkali seem to be the last one to catch the “craze” bug.
Upon their arrival, the team can already see there is something wrong. The streets appear deserted. Not even the sound of crickets can be heard throughout the day.
Natasha gazed out of the plane window, watching the tiny village below grow steadily larger as they began their descent. The view was stunning: it reminded Nat of a model village, with snow dusted rooftops, icy winding roads and the bright blue sky stretching out for miles. Nat’s mind was not on the view though, she was preoccupied, as ever, with the mission. Supergiant was not going to be an easy one to take down, the poor victims of her destructive path were testament to that. Those poor people…Yes, Supergiant was a formidable enemy, but she was determined not to let it worry her too much. She had a good team with her and they would be looking out for each other, she knew it. Nat was roused from her thoughts by the jolt of the plane touching down. This was it, this was where their mission began. She took a deep breath of the crisp fresh air as she stepped out into the village. She scanned the area, taking in as much information as possible. Something felt wrong here. It was completely silent. An involuntary shudder rolled down her spine. It was…What was the saying? Ah yes. Still as the grave.
The deputy directors debriefing had been effective. Natasha was definitely expecting the worst.
Rolling her eyes, Hope looked by the window of the Quinjet. “That will motivate us.” She told the deputy director after such reassuring words given by the woman. Their team was experienced, or as far as that would go. One of Supergiant’s colleagues had bested them in battle previously, they might not be very confident.
Or at least she felt like she wasn’t on her best game. Being a hero was what she prepared her whole life to do, yet she was feeling like the worst at it. Got kidnapped by aliens, defeated by alien. She didn’t even get to try and fight Thanos. Sure, that could hurt her ego even further. She was the first to step down of the jet, eager to try and do her best this time.
“I would call this freaky.” To say the least. The place gave her chills
Pepper had understood the debrief, had mulled the notes in her mind, and had managed to create a fair tactic for her and the team. It was an idea, based primarily on what they observed after touch-down, but it was a plan nonetheless.
“You’d be correct in that statement, Hope.” Pepper shot the woman a miniscule smile before searching for heat signatures or human presence. “No one’s home, guys.” She concluded, lifting her mask up from her face, checking around her. “I did get a reading from the church up the road. May be worth checking out... unless you want to look somewhere different.”
