Mignola is borderline magical here because his rendering conveys a sense that the X-Force as a team that looks like this is the whole point. I can easily imagine Hellboy or perhapse a more conventional military outfit looking over too see them all standing as such and without the need of any known history to them, they and the reader realize, 'Ah, its that kind of team. And they're here to do what that kind of team does,' and somehow not even as parody or satire.
