My absolute favorite bird of prey on the planet. This is Max, a 500 gram anatum peregrine. He takes the largest ducks and the fastest dove with style. I hope he will be put back in a breeding chamber soon as his offspring have been proven to be some of the best game hawks in the United States.

I happened to see two wild peregrine falcons on my hike today. What a great start to the new year! I heard one call and knew it sounded like a peregrine, but we don't have many peregrines here. American kestrels and merlins are the two most common falcons where I live, and gyrfalcons pass through in the fall and winter. Then I saw two chasing each other for a second and zip right over me. One dove down towards the beach which was a long way down the trail behind me. I wish I got a photo but there was no way I could get a good one with them moving so quickly. I did use my camera as binoculars to see if they were really peregrines, though.

Happy New Year!!! May 2016 be filled with peregrine falcons! One of my goals for 2016 is to see wild peregrines at the Palisades in NJ in the spring.

It's gotten to the point where I don't get too miffed when animated shows get peregrine falcon designs slightly wrong because it happens so often, but this bugs me a lot because they didn't even try to make it look peregrine-ish here except for maybe the shape.

Hi all! I made a quick comic about the Duck Stamp. If you can’t read it because: tiny, here it is at full size! CLICK THIS FOR LARGER VERSION I made this comic as a way to get a bit more attention for the Duck Stamp Program, and to promote the idea that it conserves a whole lot more than just ducks! I only had time/space to include a few species, but in reality thousands of species (of both plants and animals) benefit from the stamp. 98% of every single stamp sold goes into the Migratory Bird Fund, which provides funds to do things like buy lands for our National Wildlife Refuge system! Legally, no other entity or part of the government may take even a single cent away from this fund, so it is actually used for Good. Please do feel free to reblog and spread the word! Aww, I love the peregrine falcon panels. This is all so very well done! Yes, the Duck Stamp Program has indeed benefitted many species, including the one this blog is dedicated to.

Quick FYI

There’s a post plaguing the “peregrine falcon” tag on Tumblr with the caption “The striking similarity between the Profiles of a Peregrine Falcon and a B-2 Bomber”. The raptor in the top photo is not a peregrine falcon or any falcon, but rather a hawk (I’m thinking it’s a red-tail, but the perspective of the photo makes it hard for me to tell). I have don’t doubt that such an aircraft is modeled after a falcon. Many aircrafts and even certain cars replicate the shape of falcons (and other fast, sleek animals like mako sharks, for example) to make said aircraft or vehicle more aerodynamic.
