Rumination. It takes ages to digest huge amounts of fibers. Since they have to eat all day long the fresh undigested grass would be in the same huge sac as the mostly digested. It's more efficient to have different sacs depending on digestion status.

Everyone is mentioning that their bodies need to process their fiberous diet several times to actually get nutrients from it (which, of course, is true), but I think it's important to note that they actually don't have four stomachs in the way you might be imagining. They have one big stomach that's divided into four parts, while still being one organ!

ohhh the maine-anjou... a big, beautiful french breed that looks like its flocked!

i have a super soft spot for fuzzy red cattle.. and with their beautiful lil chocolate noses they literally look like big teddy bears to me. and i do mean big, because maine-anjou bulls can weigh up to 1500 kg!
