Iron and Stone

Oh my God, 

I am a sinking rock on the riverside

against a current which moves iron and stone

I plant myself here in fear

of where it will go

and at the bottom the dirt tells me,

“you’ll never know...”

Oh my God, I’ll never know

I am a spindly tree in your hurricane

desperate roots gripping the ground

the wind at my branches beg me to let go

but in the end the dirt tells me,

“You’ll never know...”

I’ll never know....

Oh my God, 

I see myself in their distant glossy eyes

they say I’m a fire sent straight from hell

who has taught me then, to burn so well?

But at the bottom, the dirt tells me,

“You’ll never know.”

I’ll never know,
