The two of you had developed a routine.
Eddie liked routine, predictability.
You would come into the bar in the evening, give Volt a kiss, and sit down in the same spot every time at the bar.
(They definitely reserve that spot for you. Everyone in the house knows better than to sit in your spot. Tony already made that mistake once.)
Before you even got situated in your seat, your drink would already be made. It took a few weeks before Eddie figured out what you liked. Why he didn’t just ask is beyond you, but the look in your eyes when he had finally gotten it right put a certain pep in his step for the rest of the day.
He’d pass you your drink, making sure your fingers brush, then you’d smile, lean forward and give him a kiss, a quiet Thank you Eddie on your lips.
His cheeks would turn a delightful pink, and he’d mumble some kind of response before quickly turning away to address another customer, his lips and fingers still buzzing from where you’d touched him.
This was a routine that the two of you made without a single word being used to set it up. It just.. Happened. The way that you just happened to start fitting in in both of their lives.
It was a part of the day that Eddie found himself looking forward to, which is why today was so strange.
You sat down in your spot, Eddie slid your already made drink your way. Your fingers brushed and he lingered, already anticipating the feeling of your soft lips against his and your sweet voice thanking him.
Except… That didn’t happen.
You accepted your drink, rested an elbow on the table and gave him a sweet smile. “Thank you Eddie.” You said, voice sweet as ever but… Not against his lips. He hesitated, feeling frozen at the sense of a familiar routine being thrown off course. But you didn’t move. Just bat your eyelashes and sipped your drink.
Disappointment bloomed in his gut but he refused to show it. You were still smiling sweetly at him, and that wasn’t nothing. Maybe you were just having an off day.
He swung away before you could spot the small pout on his lips.
The rest of the night Eddie felt a little out of sorts. He couldn’t keep his eyes from straying to you, watching you closely when you were distracted by Volt, or another patron. He worried that maybe you wouldn’t stay after closing, like you usually did.
But as Volt ushered people out the door, and the main lights flickered off, you stayed sat in your seat, a certain look glinting in your eyes as you met his steel gray ones.
Volt had a happen of disappearing after closing doing who knows what, he never explained it but Eddie began to suspect he did this to purposely give him some alone time with their live wire.
The thought made him fluster a little, hands slipping on the glass he was trying to polish.
“Eddie?” You called, “You alright?”
“Yeah.” He shot back, a little too brisk. You had caught it immediately and you smiled in a way that made his fingers twitch.
You hummed quietly and put your empty glass down. Easily you made your way behind the bar and leaned against the nearest surface where Eddie was standing. Usually when you stayed after hours you’d help with repairs… But ever since fixing the faulty wire there was a lot less that needed to be done, so lately you staying late consisted of you talking while Eddie cleaned and did some basic maintenance.
To be fair, you did still help every now and then, but Eddie secretly preferred this. He liked listening to you talk. He liked having you all to himself for just a little bit.
Eddie attempted to continue cleaning like normal, but he could feel your gaze on him. It made his skin prickle in a frustratingly good way. He glanced over at you with faint amusement in his eyes. “What’s up with you?” He asked, voice gruff as it usually was, but with that soft edge that you only got to hear if you were really close with Eddie. That tired little smirk of his made your gaze darken, and made your stomach swoop in a giddy sort of way.
You leaned closer, eyes trailing without fully realizing. It was pure instinct that kept Eddie from fully dropping the cup he was holding.
Just to be safe, he placed it down and planted his palms on the surface, meeting your eyes. “Not gonna say anything, spark?”
Your lips quirk. You love it when he calls you that.
“I just like watching you work,” you say, tilting your head trying your best to sound innocent. “That’s all.”
“Yeah?” He said with a soft laugh, “That’s it?”
“Mhm,” You hum, leaning your cheek on your palm. Hearing your voice low, draped in desire made Eddie’s cheeks warm. He glanced away with another breathless laugh. “Sure,” he muttered quietly, trying to distract himself by wiping away a mysterious stain on the counter.
“You’re cute when you squirm.”
The words fell out of your mouth so casually it took Eddie a second to fully process them. Once he did, he froze, eyes widening as he turned to look your way in shock. You were smiling still, but it didn’t seem as sweet as before. There was a playful glint in your eyes, one that reminded him a little too much of Volt. Fuck, maybe he was rubbing off on you.
… How horribly inconvenient that was for him.
He wasn’t really complaining though. Deep down.
For a second he felt like a deer in headlights. You weren’t exactly shy in showing your affections, but this was the first time you had ever been so bold with him.
“What?” He sputtered out eventually, cheeks feeling hot under your gaze.
You leaned in closer, close enough that he could feel your breath. “I said you’re cute.”
“When I squirm?” He retorted, trying to sound more confident than he really felt, an eyebrow raised for good measure.
You grin. “It’s a good look on you.”
“Please,” he muttered, but didn’t turn away. You leaned in even closer and finally pressed your lips against his. Immediately he leaned into it, a tiny little grunt escaping him when he felt your tongue slide into his mouth.
His hands flew to your waist, and you gasped a little when his hands roamed a little further, squeezing behind your thighs before he lifted you and placed you with ease on top of the counter.
(Normally he didn’t let you and Volt mess around at the bar but, it was his bar at the end of the day.)
He slotted himself between your legs and deepened the kiss, hands roaming back to your waist. He could still taste the drink he made for you on your tongue and it made him pull you tighter against him. Hands on his shoulders, you wrapped your legs around Eddie’s waist and squeezed, making him groan louder against you.
He was disappointed that you hadn’t given him his regular kiss earlier.
But he also wouldn’t complain if this became your new routine.
text: [ “Some of you have forgotten that only three years ago you were perfectly capable of writing an essay, writing a eulogy, telling a bedtime story to a child, and it should worry you that powerful companies have convinced us we can’t do things we’ve been doing for 5000 years.” ]
its probably a normal sign for the economy that all of my adulthood fantasies are like "imagine having your own kitchen living room and bathroom to decorate" "what if i could get on a train" "maybe one day i could purchase a sturdy pair of shoes" "i should save and invest in a single bicycle"
