He wrapped an arm tightly around his waist and pressed his opposite hand against the other mans chest, afraid he might manage to fall forward. “I said I would, it’s not often I break my word,” He replied, smiling fondly and shivering slightly at the hot breath hitting his neck.

“Would you mind if I borrowed our friend here?” He asked, diverting his attention to William. “I think water and some rest would serve him well.”

“By all means!“ He motioned to the pair, eyes crinkling with a joy that only alcohol could plaster onto the face of a grown man. "I hope you enjoy yourselves.” With that, William turned away, quickly gluing himself to the hulking wall of a man that was the Baron von Steuben and clutching his bicep as if it were a lifeline.

John, meanwhile, had a similar grip on his own beau. The touch was welcomed, even if it was a fraction less than intimate. A hand balled around the fabric covering Alexander’s chest as a leg clumsily shifted against the back of his thigh. “W’re not ac'ually gonna rest?” Pulling back, his eyes lifted to Alex. Though they were tired and glassy from the alcohol, a playful glint caught in them, and his lips tugged into a crooked grin. “Righ’?”

Eyes widen, then narrow. A sneer pulls at his features, contorting an expression that was almost always one of anger into an image of even greater rage. He had never expected for anyone to care enough to represent her in a case, and certainly not for that person to be experienced enough to win. This isn’t right, none of this is. She isn’t supposed to leave him- he is the one to leave her!

Normally, he would check himself, assure that he wouldn’t be caught in the act of tossing the young woman about like a limp, tattered doll… but he has nothing left to lose.

Eyes catch a glint of flame as he snatches up soft curls and tears her from the stance of delicate, practiced confidence. Though he isn’t particularly muscular or hulking, she is soft, young, pliable… The outburst that comes is nothing short of a rampage. Fists connect with her frame, the wrath of an angry god striking Maria down as shuddering breaths hiss from between clenched teeth, landing blows predominantly on her face. If he weren’t still holding her by her head, he thinks her head would pop off like a doll abused by a child, and the notion makes him growl with laughter as blood begins to wet his knuckles.

He had long figured as much out. Despite not being highly religious, he had viewed his disinterest in women as a sin for as long as he could remember. His father’s amusement had shifted to disdain and then to anger when he hadn’t grown out of what was meant to have been nothing more than a childish aversion, as one would be put off from eating their greens. Martha… she was a mistake; anger at Kinloch had mushroomed after a few too many sips of ale and thus driven him to her bed. He had felt nauseous from more than a hangover the next morning.

And yet, John had met him.

He was far too good for any truly horrible person to ever be close to. Though the general view of his attraction to his own gender as dirty still remained, perhaps it wasn’t as dirty as he once thought, or perhaps it was but it simply wasn’t such a big deal. Either way, whatever extent his sin reached, it didn’t matter. He had Alexander.

Gentle hands, stained with dirt and ink and a spattering of freckles from the warm Carolina sun, clasped around the lapels of the other man’s coat and tugged him closer.  “And every day thank God for it.” A soft smile that touched his eyes, making them merrily glint and crinkle, blossomed onto his face. “I don’t know if I could bring myself to draw breath if I didn’t love you.”

Her wrist was held in his fist, the other hand balancing a Pall Mall between his index and middle fingers. “I told you to be quiet,” he snarled, lip pulling up like a rabid dog readying itself to chomp down. James took a long draw from his cigarette before pointedly leaning down to exhale the foul, heavy smoke into her face. The cloud hung around delicate features, lacing into soft curls and tainting her with the fetor.

It was clear a bruise was already starting to form on her wrist, so when James barked at her to be quiet, Bella immediately obeyed in fear he would do something worse, not even whispering an apology like she considered doing. She held her breath as best as she could to avoid breathing in any smoke, but couldn’t stop her coughing when he blew the smoke directly into her face. It was absolutely disgusting, but she didn’t dare speak until he told her to.

The coughing grated at James’ nerves. A flick of the butt with his thumb, and a tiny clump of burnt tobacco, still red with ember, fell onto the exposed skin of Bella’s arm. It wasn’t nearly as bad as one of his favorite pastimes of stamping out the cigarette into her skin ( it lacked the sizzle, the odor of burnt hair and skin ) but would do in a pinch. Though the street was empty, he needed to take care when he lacked the security of closed doors- after all, it wouldn’t do very well to be caught burning the young girl.

His face was as undemonstrative as ever as he eyed his wife. Should they ever be invited to a masquerade ball, he should have felt perfectly at home amidst the emotionless faces. Still, unfortunately this was a place of movement. The men seated at his table, all merry and flushed from alcohol and with palms full of playing cards, fixed expectant gazes on Angelica. John was silent for a moment, glancing aside as he lifted his own glass to his lips, the gambler by his side momentarily looking away from the supposed “entertainment” of the night. The whiskey burned when it touched his throat, searing away any guilt that may have welled up in him at the pressure he placed Angelica under.

“Well,” he finally murmured, voice hoarse from the cigar smoke that hung in the air of the small room. A pause. Church placed his tumbler back on the table, catching the corner of his stack of cards beneath it. “No one is forcing you to do so.” Even as he spoke, his arms folded across his chest- a blatantly disappointed gesture.

He only stopped at her wrist, and even then only for the purpose of thumbing at her racing pulse. “Because if I don’t get what I want, I’ll slit your wrists and hang you out to dry.”
