in watch the road, it's a grotesque ending on day one. i keep coming back to it because of how ilya is written in that moment and how i characterized him... monstrous in a very human way. the body horror is lowkey a little gross and the moral weight is crushing, but somehow that combination is exactly why the character works for me
it's weird to care for someone like that and i know most people won't ever like his character or his contradictions!! which is perfectly fine. but to me it's so fun how the same hands that destroy can also cradle what’s left, and he knows, on some level, how fucked that is... the stargazing scene is a close second! both mc and ilya in that scene made me feel a little sad LMFAO

. . . how i think ilya would be as a tutor
he’d be a good tutor! he’s well-read and well-informed on certain subjects. maybe don’t ask him to tutor you on medical stuff though… he may indulge too much information in that case.
prepares everything the two of you may need for the study session. including stuff like water and snacks.
would push you to succeed and will make sure you don’t slack off! but will make sure you both take breaks.
ilya would savor the one on one time with you. your attention fixed on him as he reads out and explains passages of a book for you. the way your eyes are trained on him as he holds up flashcards. those small things! above all else however, he’d enjoy the fact that you needed him for this. that you came to him of all people. that’s the best part.
on a darker route… he’d still tutor you, i think. maybe not with as much fervor but he’d still enjoy the fact you went to him so he’d do it.

During the first stages of falling for you he would catch himself writing more detailed notes about you like “(name) looks so happy doing this” or “(name) didn’t like when this happened” writing more about you than others
If you ever would hang out with him he would get you a drink and watch as you take it studying if you like it or not and if you do he will get it for you next time.
He would let you in his bubble more often even if the friend group huddles up again for a hang out I see him letting you touch his shoulder or bump him a little . Small things that mean a lot to him
Though I don’t see him drawing small hearts on his notes about you I do see him being extra sweet in a way and more detailed on your notes than others
If you both were ever going to an abandoned place together he would step forward to go first claiming he’s “more experienced” when in his heart he knows he’s doing it incase something happens to you
Though he’s closed off and his walls are high during those times as he starts to realize he’s falling for you, he would let some walls “slip”

it’s safe to say cain would be riddled with internalized homophobia. the acceptance of his feelings would be a long, painful road for both you and cain. he has a lot of issues going on that he has to get through for it to work…
denial. denial. denial. SO MUCH DENIAL!! relationships and trust are tough for him in general. developing feelings for a man wouldn’t even register properly within his brain. he’s so repressed…
would project the shame and self-hatred onto you. he’d become more closed off… a bit more mouthy… a tad more defensive. you get the picture. he has to built up these walls around himself and try to push you away so he doesn’t have to acknowledge these feeling that are growing inside his chest. out of sight, out of mind. in a way.
once he accepts these feelings and gets into a relationship: i feel as though he would become competitive in very subtle ways. this slight veers into the second question. he’d try and fight for the lead role in the relationship, i think? cain would struggle with an mc who would also want to take that dominant or try to lead the relationship, regardless of gender.
i believe he has a very rigid idea of how relationships should function and that he should wear the pants in the relationship because it would be very shameful to him to be the one who takes the backseat role as it was something he was likely taught to be ashamed of. his masculinity is something he seems values a lot and this would extend into his relationships as well. he also seems to value control which could cause even more clashing between himself and an mc of this nature. perhaps from a lack of it from his childhood (that’s just speculation however).
he’d struggle to be vulnerable. that’s considered “weak” and “girly” after all. that’d be especially hard to do with another man in cain’s eyes. it’s exposing a side of him that he was taught shouldn’t be seen. i imagine that when he finally does get vulnerable, it would be very difficult for him. struggling to get the words out, he’d curl in on himself away from you.
it wouldn’t be a pleasant experience for either party as i said but i really do think cain has the capacity to grow and learn to accept himself and feel comfortable enough to be vulnerable and be loved by the mc given the time and effort.

“that’s not what i— ugh…” cain groans, looking down at his notes. a bitter laugh almost escaping him at the stupidity of your words. he had been trying and failing for the past 20 minutes to explain his theories to you but you just didn’t seem to be taking him seriously.
was he a joke to you? was making a mockery of his ideas amusing?
“do the churches in the inter-webs have internet priests?” you tilt your head in consideration, your expression serious as you take a sip from your cup of tea, “are there little internet people living inside the screen? giving little masses…!” your eyes sparkle with fascination. you lean in a bit closer to cain — making him instinctively scoot back in the booth seat.
“it’s a metaphor.” cain says between gritted teeth, looking up from his notebook.
a pause follows. a long, excruciating pause. cain didn’t know how much more of this conversation he could take. one more stupid comeback and he was leaving which was much preferable to whatever… this was.
“i see…” disappointment falls onto your face. no retort or mocking words. cain was confused. the emotions seemed genuine. even he could tell that much.
he sighs, “well, it’s not entirely implausible. there’s been evidence in my research of phenomena such as that. i won’t… entirely disregard it” cain practically has to force the words out but your eyes immediately light back up at the sound of them.
you smile. it’s not mocking though. it expresses a genuine sense of curiosity. maybe you weren’t entirely unreceptive after all.
