We are a literary and arts journal that seeks to uplift the voices of those pursuing peace after trauma, and to provide community and calm through healing art and storytelling.

As 2020 draws to a close, we have an announcement to make. For 5 years we have been known as Persephone’s Daughters. In 2021, we will begin the process of changing our name. As a literary & arts journal for abuse survivors of all gender identities, we feel that it is necessary to update our name to reflect this in order to be more inclusive to survivors who don’t identify as cisgender women. 

Transgender and non-binary survivors face disproportionately high rates of domestic and sexual violence. We also know that male survivors are an incredibly stigmatized community for whom very few abuse services are available. Please stay tuned as we navigate this change beginning in 2021!

Persephone’s Daughters is thrilled to announce our first virtual reading event! We will be holding a virtual reading and art showcase on Wednesday, October 28 from 7-8:30pm CT for Domestic Violence Awareness Month, featuring contributors reading and sharing their art around themes of surviving and healing from abuse.

Contributor lineup is TBD. Please stay tuned, and in the meantime please register for the event via Zoom here. We will also be holding the event via YouTube Live.

The event is FREE but we will also be collecting donations for Women of Color Network, Inc.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and I think it would be great if people could share the 24/7 National Domestic Violence Hotline which is staffed 24/7 to help survivors and their friends and family: 1-800-799-SAFE (7234)

trauma tells you being happy is wrong. your body rejects it because it’s unfamiliar, it’s something you have felt out of touch with for a long time. so just know that this is where the self-sabotage begins but that doesn’t mean you don’t deserve to be happy. it’ll just take time to get used to it again, to fully enjoy it and remind yourself you don’t deserve to put yourself through painful situations.

Justice RBG's death has just been announced, what happens now? I'm terrified of what's going to happen if the GOP manage to replace her; I don't know if they even CAN, if there's enough time, or if that could somehow be prevented until after the inauguration. I don't know what's going to happen next but I'm afraid of what this will mean.

Not to be an anarchist on main but the answer is always:

Connect with your local communities to share resources and make sure everyone is safe.

learn new skills whenever you can, especially survival, communication, and first aid skills. Look for CERT trainings as a good source of free classes and hands-on education.

join and support unions whenever possible.

look to the activists of the past for guidance: if the ACA is overturned start staging die-ins (and if you’re a medical professional then now is the time to work with your colleagues to figure out how you’re going to provide care to people who are going to lose their medical coverage)

work local; the supreme court isn’t something that you can control, but maybe you can have an impact on your city’s zoning policies or on whether or not unused land becomes a community food garden.

do jail support, film cops, and listen to cop communications so that you can report on their movements to the people they threaten.

feed the hungry.

hack the planet.

If not you then who? If you see a need, fill it.

Take care of yourself and take care of each other.

Shit is fucked up, the government is fucked up, the world is fucked up. It probably won’t always be that way, but right now all that you can do is make the part of the world that you’re in contact with a little better, so do that.

If you’re feeling helpless and scared one of the single best things that you can do is take action and remind yourself that you make an impact on the world. Offer someone a ride, pick up groceries for your elderly neighbor.

You wanna do something that’s legal, easy, and unambiguously good? Download whatever driving/traffic app is popular in your area and warn people when you see cops.

Warning people about speed traps and hidden cops prevents deportations, prevents theft-by-cops under the name of civil forfeiture, prevents poor people from losing their job or facing eviction or jailtime as a result of suspended licenses and lost wages.

Protect your community! Warn them about cops!
