BIG BIG SPOILERS FOR THAT GAME. But i need i need to talk about it.
i highly recomend you play it for yourself though it needs more love and its only 10 bucks GO!
Discopup had my jaw on the FLOOR multiple times. It needs more love Just wow. it had me so interested and having fun every second of the way.
but i wanna talk about what i got out of it theme wise.
So the game is about this seal girl who wants to sneak into a dogs only club. its full of silly funny characters and has some neat puzzles, It is a game that makes you think.
its a puzzle game where you have to figure things out by yourself.
but as the game goes on, shadier and more odd things start happening.
this game DESTROYS the forth wall.
like the 4th wall is NOT. seriously the wall is shattered and its never coming back.
But what i got from this game was a story about fitting in. Forcing yourself too fit in.
Our seal is not allowed in because shes not a dog. hell a fox isn't let in despite being a canine.
George the mouse moving away from his village home to experience something new. Only to be ignored and unseen by everyone here because hes small. because hes different.
The apes trying to make their all inclusive bar popular, but its not working. because people want to be in Discopup.
To get into the club, you have to dress up as a dog. You have to take off your dress for a suit. you have to find dog ears to wear or a hat. and of course the mask, you need a dog mask to enter.
There are two masks you can wear, a paper one or the "realistic one"
and depending on what one you wear and how you get in. things change, the ending is different.
this seal goes though ALOT just to get in there.
getting shot, Talking to aliens, Talking to what might be a demon, an angel? something real.
The forth wall breaks are insane. The real dog telling you, you cant go farther, the "king" holing the ring.
The seal trying to run and find something anything to get into that damn club, the forth wall breaks as ive said alot here are amazing, making you think your controlling the seal only to reveal its actually FIRST PERSON is fucking INSANE.
When you get into the club its revealed that ALL the members inside are just different animals wearing dog masks. Its funny at first but ultimately everyone has the same kind of dialogue.
they went though so much effort to look like dogs.
for this?
this party doesn't live up to its hype...
you kind of want to leave, but
"no dog wants to leave once they've entered discopup"
You went though so much effort to fit in.
why not dance as a dog,
even though its NOTHING like you thought it was.
then there's the "realistic dog mask" a mask made out of different animals, killed and slain for you to wear.
the clubs dialogue changes.. all the members are afraid and or disgusted by you
the game repeats itself
"was it worth it?"
because as said before.. discopup club kinda.. sucks.
you hurt people, to change yourself.
Was it worth it?
then the VIP room the end of the story.
the VIP revealing its just people, People who wanted to make a story. kind of reminded me of lesley from dhmis and how she spoke and functioned.
and these people, are ALL wearing canine masks. All of them.
the seal opens the door, hoping for something anything different. a place where she doesn't have to wear a mask to have fun, to fit in, to be respected.
the opens the door and the VIPs tell her the truth
where they come from... its the same thing.
wherever she goes be it in this world they made for her or the one outside... its the same.
all she can do is go back to the club... and take off the mask with everyone watching. and face whatever continuance's it brings you.
if you have on the realistic mask, she is unable to take it off. she cannot escape what she's done, what's she supported. she's stuck here like this forever. you cannot take that mask off.
but if she has the paper mask, she takes it off and dances her little heart away, fully ready to be kicked out.
but everyone else takes off their masks and dances with her. everybody has a fun time knowing they dont have to hide from ach other anymore they dont have to be dogs to fit in.
discopup is far to funny to be considered a horror game to me
but its far too scary and real to be considered a funny lil puzzle game
it is a surreal experience though and though.
about forceing youself to fit in.
There also things you missed like how the game is a film and how the story of Orpheus and Eurydice haunt the narrative (it makes the seal’s journey sadder as it adds to her misery).

Not to be a bitch but sometimes people engage with fiction in the most boring way possible, and nowhere is this clearer than in videogames. Like what you mean you hate a character just because they were kind of abrasive when speaking to the player character? "They were mean to me" and it didn't occur to you to wonder why? Like, what might their attitude toward you reveal about the world? About the social dynamics within it? About their own perspectives and backgrounds and personalities? Does it even occur you to ask? Would you only have liked them if they bowed to your presence and talked about how great you are? Like I'm sorry but you're so boring. How boring fiction would be if it cathered to you
