Maybe it's because I'm an Old, but I want the bands I like to charge a price that's sustainable for them so that they can continue being bands.
That’s the core of it. If you like something, you pay for it so you can have more of it.
What I should have included in my response that kicked this whole thing off was this fact:
Most hardcore kids are passing through. It sounds like a bad youth crew lyric, but it’s a fact. Most people see their lives in clearly defined and easily compartmentalized phases. For many, the music that they’re into as young people is just something to do at the time and either laugh at later or reminisce about warmly. Because that’s how they see music period. Just something to ‘do’ before the next thing you must ‘do.’
Everyone wonders why nothing gets done on a corporate level about climate change. That’s easy. It’s because the executives at the top are over 50-years-old. They know that they’ll be dead before the planet becomes unlivable. So, why do the sustainable thing when they can do the selfish one?
That’s how subcultures are too. Most of these people know they’ll be gone before they have to answer for the atmosphere they created. Who cares if the band you ‘love’ has to break up because you fostered an environment where they were underpaid? You’re a lawyer now and don’t have time to go to their shows anyway. And you’ll always have ‘those first few records they did, those were killer.’
The people saying it’s wrong for a musician to be paid fairly are involved in music for everything but the music. The politics; the sense of identity; the community. They can’t be spoken to like they appreciate anything. They’re just graphic tees with tumblr accounts.
