Okay, doll friends, I have a question. I’m kicking around the idea of customizing a Ken to look like one of my convention friends. All I really need to do to the specific Ken I have in mind is add a beard. So, what’s the best medium to use for a light beard? More than stubble, less than Santa Claus. I have a jar of Winsor & Newton gloss medium that I used for short hair before.

I’m also planning, if I do this, to customize a Barbie into his girlfriend. Trouble is, the best head I’ve found is on a Curvy, but I would need a Petite to accurately represent her. Do Curvy heads look okay on Petite bodies?

I can answer the last by saying that Mattel itself uses the same heads on all different bodies with no changes, so it would look as OK as anything Mattel releases.

Ive never personally attempted this, but I know of chopping up yarn extremely fine to use as flocking. you could just add another layer on top for a more full beard. mix in finely minced flocking with clear pva glue and apply with a brush to his face. also you can buy flocking powder AFAIK.

You all know how I am about writers and MREs.

This guy is eating one that’s 33 years old, and miraculously still edible. He does mention that he’s gotten some that aren’t in this video.

The peanut butter turned to liquid. Texture on that is all wrong, but still edible according to him.

So there is the ever-so-slightest chance you could get a really old MRE that’s been kept in ideal conditions which is still viable after all that time.

But their official shelf life is roughly 5 years, and if they aren’t kept in ideal conditions (dry, between freezing and 62F) your chances of an edible meal are slim. I still don’t like when writers have their characters finding MREs just out in the wild and digging in. Those that have been exposed to the elements are more likely than not going to be rancid.

I picked up this doll at the local pharmacy today. It's all about like a ~age appropriate kid shape~ which I think is kind of cool but I also don't super buy into it. But she's an archeologist. ARCHEOLOGIST! As an arch major I couldn't NOT buy her.

I did go thrifting and kind of already broke my one doll a month resolution :/ But plan to sell more so maybe I can forgive myself.

This guy! Detachable rooted head is going on some other body. And that’s a shame because this body! Would be so fabulous! If his arms were in an even SLIGHTLY more workable position!

Absolutely fabulous.

The body is hollow hard plastic and I could allllmost add some joints if he weren’t in such an asymmetrical position. Frustrating.

Somebody did such a great job for a chintzy souvenir doll.

Anyway I’m excited to clean him up and see what’s actually under there. Might need a repaint and reroot.

OK I can see how it could get addictive to design enamel pins and order them in small runs to resell…

It’s not actually legal advice or anything but the tons and tons of indie pin makers that I’ve seen on Insta are always using popular copyrighted characters and images.

Also I feel like I would buy a Doll Ahoy logo pin! Honestly if y'all started making doll related pins, I’d love it. 💞

I was poking around this site  https://www.madebycooper.com/ because this is the company that PangurAndGrim has been using for the last few pins.  The (hypothetical) prices aren’t as bad as I expected, and I do like the idea of this kind of design  https://www.madebycooper.com/products/pins-patches/die-struck-badges/–all metal, no enamel–too.  They also make button badges https://www.madebycooper.com/products/pins-patches/button-badges/ although you have to contact them for any sort of a quote (not just the rough estimates given for other kinds of pins.)

I feel confident I could design something interesting, I just have no idea where to even start with thinking of a design XD

As someone who just went through this, my experience with Made By Cooper left me dissatisfied. My first batch came without the backing cards (which I paid for!), and about 85% of the pins were unsellable due to defects. They were willing to run the lot again, but there were still a large percentage with fuzz embedded in the enamel.

Thanks for the information about your experience!  Yeah, the idea of not really knowing which company to use is another big hesitation about the idea of making pins.
